SC orders PM Oli to furnish response in a week on contempt of court case

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued an order seeking written response from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli within a week on a case of contempt of court.

A single bench of Justice Dr Manoj Sharma issued the order, “Submit the written response explaining all details by yourself (PM) within a week after you receive the letter from SC.”

Senior advocate Dr Kumar Sharma Acharya and advocate Kanchan Krishna Neupane on Wednesday had filed a contempt of court case against PM Oli, arguing that he was giving views on a case sub-judice in court – the dissolution of House of Representatives, thereby interfering with the judicial work.

Meanwhile, four former chief justices and former speakers have also been ordered to furnish written response on contempt of court case.

Former chief justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anup Raj Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha and Sushila Karki and former speaker Daman Nath Dhungana have been asked to respond in writing within a week they receive letter from the court. The same bench issued the order.

Advocate Ghimire had filed a contempt of court case against former chief justices and former speaker. As per the law, if anyone is found guilty on contempt of court, he/she is fined Rs 10,000 or slapped a year of imprisonment or both.
