Janakpurdham, June 10: A total of 114 master’s level and bachelor’s level students graduated from the Rajarshi Janak University on Tuesday.
Prime Minister and Chancellor of the University, KP Sharma Oli, conferred the degree on the graduated students in the first graduation ceremony of the university held here.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister also presented medals to four outstanding students of the university and 10 students with highest scores from different faculties and academic programmes.
During the event, senior litterateur Prof Dr Rajendra Bimal urged the students to devote their knowledge and skills for the cause of the nation and society with top priority.
University’s Vice Chancellor Dr Amar Prasad Yadav termed the convocation ceremony as an historic event and expressed his commitment to provide quality education in the university.
The university runs 13 academic programmes under four faculties including Humanities and Law; Science Technology and Engineering; Health and Management.
Vice Chancellor Dr Yadav said that around 1,700 students from 19 districts and five provinces are studying in different affiliated campuses of the university. The university now has five constituent and 69 affiliate campuses.
Prior to the convocation ceremony, Prime Minister and Chancellor Oli presided over the Senate meeting of the university.

21- Labour agreement reached between Nepal and Saudi
Kathmandu, June 10: A labour agreement has reached between Nepal and Saudi Arabia.
During the sideline bilateral meeting and discussion on Tuesday, the landmark agreement took place between Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, and Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tariq Al Hamad for sending Nepali workforce to Saudi Arabia, informed Minister Bhandari’s private secretariat.
Minister Bhandari shared that Saudi Arabia has agreed to immediately sign two pacts on skill certification of general and skill-based workers programme keeping the domestic labour agreement as it is.
It may be noted that Nepal has given a nod to the draft agreement related to the general labour with Saudi Arabia.
“An agreement for sending general workers to Saudi Arabia has already been reached. Yet, signing on the agreement is left”, said Minister Bhandari. “Saudi Arabia had insisted that the general agreement could be signed only after the domestic workers’ agreement. The current meeting has decided to proceed with the already reached pact and to do further ground work on the draft of the domestic labour agreement”.
He apprised the Saudi side of the directive of Nepal’s parliamentary committee noting the domestic labour agreement should be made after concluding the labour agreement between the two countries.
Minister Bhandari also pointed out the necessity of a pilot project to that end.

Yoga training for CIT minister and staffers
Kathmandu, June 10: The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, secretaries, joint secretaries and employees took part in a yoga training organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Life Sciences Institute.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, Secretary Radhika Aryal, joint secretaries and employees learned yoga in the yoga practice held at the assembly hall of Public Broadcasting Service, Radio Nepal.
Founder of the Life Sciences Institute, AP Bhanu Sharma, provided training on various yoga asanas at the program. He also suggested that yoga should be mandatory for human life to be simple, easy, healthy, peaceful and oriented towards prosperity.

Three recommended as Supreme Court Justice
Kathmandu, June 10: The Judicial Council has recommended the names of three individuals for the post of Supreme Court Justice.
Those recommended as the Supreme Court justices are Senior Advocate Meghraj Pokharel, Chief Judge of the High Court, Janakpur, Shrikant Poudel, and Chief Judge of the High Court, Dipayal, Shantisingh Thapa.
According to Judicial Council spokesperson Ashok Kumar Chhetri, the council’s meeting on Monday had recommended the names of three justices to the Supreme Court.

Light rain predicted from Wednesday, temperature to drop
Kathmandu, June 10: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has predicted that there is a possibility of light rain from coming Wednesday, which will cause the temperature to dip a bit.
Temperature has risen in most of the places across Tarai Madhesh belt (lowland) and the Kathmandu Valley for some time now in absence of rainfall, the Department said.
Meteorologist Pratima Manandhar said that western and the central part of the country is currently under the influence of the westerly winds and local winds while a majority of the places in Koshi Province is impacted by monsoon air.
Monsoon is taking some time to spread across the country from the eastern part as monsoon wind is yet to be fully active. She shared that the heat has increased significantly at present due to lack of rainfall.
However, a light rainfall is taking place in some districts in Koshi, Bagmati and Lumbini Provinces today.
She mentioned about the likelihood of light rainfall in various places including Kathmandu Valley from coming Wednesday. “The temperature will gradually decrease from Wednesday as clouds are also forming and rainfall is likely,” the meteorologist explained.
Today’s maximum temperature of Kathmandu Valley was 30 degree Celsius while Bhairahawa, Dhangadi and Nepalgunj recorded 41 degree Celsius, the highest of all other places in the country.
The Department has forecasted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning in few places of Koshi, Gandaki and Lumbini Province and similar weather is predicted in a place or two in hilly areas of the remaining provinces from coming Wednesday.
A couple of places in mountainous parts of the country could witness rainfall which could affect the people’s lives as well as road and air transportation, the Department cautioned and urged one and all for necessary precaution and early preparedness to reduce the impact of the rain-induced disasters.

Call to utilize natural resources for nat’l interests
Kathmandu, June 10: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel has stated that we should work to achieve the country’s economic prosperity through maximum utilization of natural resources available in the country.
After observing the photo exhibition today organized by RSS under the theme ‘Mountain Tourism: Our Pride, Our Identity’ on the occasion of 18th Republic Day, Finance Minister Paudel said we should get maximum benefits from the utilization of our rich natural resources.
“We are rich culturally as well. Nepal is beautiful in all respects including mountains, forests, flora and fauna. We should utilize the nature’s gift for the country’s economic progress and prosperity,” the Finance Minister added.
Asked about the budget implementation in the upcoming fiscal year, Paudel said the budget would be implemented effectively since it is realistic in view of the current economic condition of the country.
“The upcoming fiscal year’s budget is based on our ground reality. The estimates for resources and expenditures are realistic. The major challenge is to improve capital expenditure,” he added.

UNDP Human Development Report 2025 released, Nepal ranks 145
` Kathmandu, June 10: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released its ‘Human Development Report, 2025’ at a function held in the capital on Tuesday.
The report focuses on the impact that artificial intelligence (AI) can have on the multidimensional aspects of human development along with the potential that it carries. The report also highlights the potential for the use of AI to further strengthen human development, promote inclusion and establishing a just society.
According to the report, Nepal is in the list of countries with medium human development in the Human Development Index. Nepal is ranked 145th with an index of 0.622. The report also mentions that Nepal’s Human Development Index has increased by 54 percent in the last 35 years.
At the report’s launching event, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung said that Nepal has been taking policy initiatives to promote artificial intelligence, digital economy, establish data centers and attract foreign direct investment.
A policy has been adopted to increase the use of AI in the research and development sector, while studies are being conducted on how AI can be effectively used in sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.
Minister Gurung said that the cold weather of the Himalayan region and the availability of cheap green energy (hydropower) have the potential to establish Nepal as an attractive destination for establishing a data center.
The government has planned to establish IT hubs in every province and initiatives are being taken to develop infrastructure for the same, said Minister Gurung. He expressed his belief that the ‘Digital Nepal Framework’, which Nepal has already implemented, will be further refined and implemented in a systematic manner, and that this will improve digitalization of government service, e-governance and digital access of citizens.
On the occasion, UNDP Nepal Resident Representative Kyoko Yokosuka said that the report focuses on how to benefit from the use of artificial intelligence and what challenges it may come up with. In the case of Nepal, she said that the use of AI can be effective in areas such as inclusive service delivery, improving the efficiency of local levels, disaster management and mitigating the impact of climate change, and data-based policymaking.
Laos defeats Nepal 2-0
Kathmandu, June 10: Laos defeated Nepal 2-1 in the match held today under the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.
Hosts Laos won by 2-1 in the match held at the New Laos National Stadium. This is the first time that Nepal has lost to Laos in a football match.
Damoth Thongkhamsavath and Peter Phanthavong scored one goal each in Laos’ victory in the 13th and 49th minute of the match. Nepal’s Manish Dangi converted a penalty after winning a foul inside the Laos d-box in the 73rd minute of the match to make it 2-1. However, Nepal could not score any further and thus losing to the home team.
Earlier, Nepal had lost 0-2 to Malaysia in the first match.
Nepal is together with Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam in Group F. The group winner will book a place in the 19th Asian Cup football tournament to be held in Saudi Arabia in 2027.
Nepal will now play its third match against Vietnam in coming October.
The playing 11 for Nepal captained by Kiran Chemjong included Bimal Pandey, Anant Tamang, Suman Shrestha, Yogesh Gurung, Anjan Bista, Rohit Chand, Erik Bista, Ayush Ghalan, Manish Dangi and Laken Limbu. Matt Ross is the head coach of the Nepali national football team.

Police shoot at and arrest Drug peddlers in Kathmandu
Kathmandu, June 10: A police squad detained drug peddlers in Tokha of Kathmandu after firing at them in retaliation.
Acting on a tip off about perpetual transaction of drugs, brown sugar, in Kathmandu, the police team caught two suspected persons from Sundhara road in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-11 at 2.00 pm today in course of the search.
The police team used the latter to reach to the place near Grande Hospital where drug peddlers were said to be hiding.
After obtaining information from the arrested that the peddlers possess drugs, the bureau team reached there at 3.15 pm this afternoon.
Bureau Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP), Janak Bahadur Shahi informed that the police team was compelled to open fire when the two bounced on the police with iron rod in course of arresting them.
Senior constable Nawaraj Ghising and assistant constable Rabindra KC were injured in the attack.
The police fired four rounds of blank fire in an attempt to detain the drug dealers. He said the police had to open fire to take them control them when they continued assaulting on police even despite the blank fire.
Among those arrested are 20-year-old Sumit Kumar from Danpur, 25-year-old Chandan Kumar Jaiswal from the same place, 40-year-old Shasik Alam from West Bengal, India, and 22-year-old Mohammad Manzoor Alam from Bihar.
The police reported that both Alams, who were shot and caught, have gunshot wounds in their left leg. It was reported that 200 grams of brown heroin was recovered from at Tokha Municipality-3.

Government should regulate, not indulge in trade: NC President Deuba
Kathmandu, June 10: Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that in a liberal economy the government should not trade but regulate it effectively.
In an interaction organized by the NC Central Department of Supply and Consumer Affairs here Tuesday, he stressed the need to encourage industrialists and businesspersons with regulation as part of a liberalization policy.
On the occasion, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current quota for gold imports for the country and said that it should be left open to combat smuggling.
At the program, party General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa said that the priorities of the current government are economic reform, good governance, investment promotion and constitution amendment.
He shared that the Nepali Congress is working through various departments to discuss and advocate on issues of livelihood, and stressed that in a capitalist system the interests of traders as well as the rights of consumers should be ensured.
Dinesh Koirala, the party’s Consumer Affairs Department Coordinator and central member Guru Baral, former Governor Dr Chiranjivi Nepal, former Secretary to the Government of Nepal Kewal Bhandari, and others expressed their views on the impact of the budget on the consumer supply chain and the rights and interests of consumers.

Genetic power of Nepali students is strong, PM argues
Janakpurdham, June 10: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the genetic power of Nepali students was strong, as they are the descendants of the scholarly ancestors.
Addressing the first convocation ceremony of the Rajarshi Janak University in Janakpur, PM Oli, who is also the Chancellor of the university, expressed the confidence that Nepali universities’ graduates can compete with the students from any of the university in the world.”Nepal is a land of knowledge. It carries the ancient civilization like Shaiva and Bishwamitra. World first Ayurveda doctor Charak Rishi is from this country,” PM Oli added.
Nepal’s Bhaskaracharya published a book ‘Siddhanta Shiromani’ in 1210 BS which was before Newton described the Theory of Gravity, Chancellor Oli said.
“Attempts have been made to create illusion that eastern philosophy is based on conservative notion, which is not true. This is a principle,” Oli stated.
Likewise, PM Oli said that every student has the potential to explore one’s talents given that the student was provided with the opportunities to devote to the areas of interest.
He also asked the graduates to hone the aspirations of humanity and benevolence, not the arrogance. “Education brings politeness; politeness brings good deeds and the good deeds ensures wealth while wealth provides happiness,” the PM argued.

Patan (Lalitpur), June 10: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said journalism should show path to the society with positive and analytical consciousness.
In his address to a ceremony held today in Lalitpur on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of ratopati.com, an online news portal, Prime Minister Oli stated that analytical awareness helps distinguish good and bad, urging journalism sector to embrace the truth.
“One should not be critical on falsehoods; being impartial is sufficient. Mere critical awareness see bad even in good, it criticizes one to showcase another as good. Ratopati has protected itself from undesired accusations. Even if people don’t like truth, it must be written for one’s own sake. There should not be a tendency to shape the truth for oneself,” Prime Minister Oli said.
He lauded the Ratopati for its strides keeping good rapport when the society, globe and relationships are changing in a rapid pace.

First Public Green Bond issued in Nepal with support from South Korea
Kathmandu, June 10: For the first time, a Public Green Bond has been issued in the country with support from the government of South Korea.
At a programme organized in the capital city on Tuesday, the stakeholders shared that approval from the regulatory bodies was taken to issue the Public Green Bond for Nepal Infrastructure Bank (NIFRA) with the financial support from Global Green Growth Institute and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The NIFRA Green Energy Bond 2088-89 of Rs 5 billion (USD 36 million) is issued for the period of seven years with the commitment to provide six percent annual interest rate.
The amount to be received from the bond issuance will be prioritized for renewable energy sector and this is expected to play crucial role in clean and green infrastructure investment in Nepal.
On the occasion, Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri termed this move as a cornerstone in Nepal’s journey to economic development.
He said the green finance mobilization would open up new avenues for inclusive economic growth and international cooperation.
Likewise, South Korean Ambassador to Nepal Park Tae-Young said that the Green Bond would help Nepal lure more investment and obtain sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
The South Korean Ambassador viewed that the issuance of Green Bond has prepared a basis for strengthening institutional and technical capacity.

Bill to amend Nepal Citizenship Act passed by committee
Kathmandu, June 10: The House of Representatives, State Affairs and Good Governance Committee has passed the Bill designed to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063. It was passed unanimously in Tuesday’s meeting of the committee.
The bill was passed after discussions with the lawmakers and stakeholders who had proposed amendments to the bill, shared committee chair Ramhari Khatiwada. He expressed confidence that the bill would address the difficulties seen in obtaining citizenship.

Madhesh government’s policy and program unanimously approved
Dhanusha, June 10: The policy and program of the Madhesh Province government for the upcoming fiscal year 2025/26 has been unanimously approved. The meeting of the Provincial Assembly on Tuesday unanimously approved the policy and program.
Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh had submitted a proposal seeking approval the policy and program presented by Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari in the Provincial Assembly for the fiscal year 2082/83.
The policy and program were discussed for two days in the Provincial Assembly. Earlier, Chief Minister Singh had responded to the questions raised by the Provincial Assembly members during the discussion.

Coliform bacteria found in water at KMC’s central office
Kathmandu, June 10: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has slapped a fine of Rs 200,000 to the supplier after coliform bacteria were detected in the drinking water being used in the KMC’s central office.
The KMC thus has terminated the contract with the supplier-CN Enterprises- for the substandard supply of such essential drinking water.
According to Chief of KMC’s Department of Agriculture and Livestock, Nurnidhi Neupane, the decision to scrap the deal with the drinking water supplier was taken at the Chief Administrator level.
The technical examination of the drinking water in the KMC office has found the coliform bacteria, he explained.
The coliform bacteria are bacteria that are always present in the digestive tracts of animals, including humans and are found in their wastes.
