Trafficking in children high at border areas: Report

            Kathmandu, Oct 5 : Most children are found trafficked from the districts sharing the border with India.

            According to the National Child Rights Council, it is found that children are lured and trafficked especially from Banke, Sarlahi, Kanchanpur, Saptari, Siraha, Sunsari, Nawalparashi, Dolakha, Chitwan, Surkhet, Dang, Baitadi among the other districts.

            A study of reports related to child marriage disseminated by various mass media in fiscal year 2018/19 showed that 96 minors were the victims of trafficking and sale during that period. The Council had carried out the study and prepared a report based on it.

            The largest, 77 children have been the victims of trafficking and sale during the third quarter in this period while 17 children have been trafficked and sold in the first quarter. Among the children trafficked and sold, 59 are male and 37 female.

            Council’s spokesman Ram Bahadur Chand said the study report showed that 73 per cent or 70 of the child victims had been intercepted by police when they were being trafficked from one district to the next.

            He said 17 children were taken to India to work as domestic help and for other purposes while nine were trafficked to use them as drug peddlers.

            As per the Report, 27 children have committed suicide during this period. Among the children taking their own life, 21 are girls and six boys. They are between 10 to 18 years of age.
