NA election: Sitaula and Koirala elected from Koshi Province

Morang, Jan 25: Krishna Prasad Sitaula of Nepali Congress (NC) and Rukmani Koirala of CPN (UML) have been elected the National Assembly (NA) members from Koshi Provice.

Sitaula of NC was elected by getting 5,292 vote weightage under the ‘other’ category while Rastriya Prajatantra Party’s Uddhav Poudel got 4,526 vote weightage, Election Officer Bishnu Prasad Gautam announced this evening.

Likewise, Rukmani Koirala of UML was elected under the category of ‘women’ by getting 5,086 vote weightage against Champadevi Karki of CPN (Maoist Centre), who got 4,992 vote weightage. 

After their victory, Election Officer Gautam handed over the certificate to winners Sitaula and Koirala. In the election held from 9 am at Biratnagar-based Office of the Koshi Province Office of Election Commission, a total of 271 voters out of 274 cast their votes.

Mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Harka Sangpang abstained himself in the voting while Chairman of Morang Gramthan Rural Municipality Jaya Prasad Gachhadar could not vote citing illness and Chairman of Jhapa Rural Municipality in Jhapa district could not vote as he is suspended from the post.

National Assembly member election today

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Election to pick the members of National Assembly going vacant from coming March 4 is taking place today.

As per the law, the election has to be held 35 days before the end of the tenure of the members. The election will take place from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm in the designated polling stations of the provinces.

The province assembly members, rural municipality chairs and vice chairs, municipality mayors and deputy mayors will cast their vote in the election.

There will be an electoral college comprising members of the Province Assembly and chairperson and vice-chairperson of the rural municipality and mayor and deputy mayor of the municipality.

The weightage of a vote from Province Assembly members is 53 while it is 19 of a vote from chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the rural municipalities and mayors and deputy mayors of municipalities. With this, the total vote weightage will be 57,559.

A total of 1,958 voters, including 549 provincial assembly members and chiefs and deputy chiefs of local levels, will cast their votes in the election.

All necessary preparation have been completed, the election commission said.

Horse reproduction centre to be shifted for airport expansion

Chitwan, Jan 25: Preparation has been advanced to expand Bharatpur Airport by shifting the Nepal Army’s Bharatpur-based Horse Reproduction Centre.

The shifting of the center has been taken ahead as an appropriate alternative after a long ground work.

Now small aircrafts are only being operated on day time due to short runway of the airport.

The airport is going to be expanded as there will be a short of aircrafts with the small carrier turning old in a couple of years. The expansion work is going to move forward with positive response from all the concerned local governments. Bharatpur Metropolitan City has been taking initiatives for the expansion.

Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal informed that it was agreed to expand the airport by transferring the horse reproduction centre.

It may be noted that the Prime Minister had already directed to bring the proposal to this effect in the cabinet meeting.

According to Mayor Dahal, the runway of the airport is to be expanded to 1,500 meters. With the expansion, big aircrafts with the capacity of 72 seats can be operated in the night time.

At a programme organized at the Shree Naya Sabuj Battalion at Bharatpur on Saturday, Defense Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka said that 19 bigha four kattha four dhur land owned by the barrack has to be handed to the airport for its expansion bid.

He informed that the reproduction centre will be shifted to the Shaktikhor-based barrack in Kalika municipality.

Minister Khadka said the ministry will take ahead necessary process to shift the reproduction centre after carrying out on-site inspection.

The centre has a total of 110 horses. It has been operational since 2041 BS.

Karnali exports goats worth Rs 3.24 billion

Karnali, Jan 25: Karnali province has generated capital of Rs 3.24 billion from the export of goats.

This was disclosed at a press meet organized by the Karnali Province Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperative Development at Birendranagar Surkhet on Wednesday.

Unveiling achievements of first year of his tenure, Minister Bhim Prakash Sharma said Karnali exported vegetables, kiwi, ginger and milk worth Rs 240 million from different districts.

Similarly, agriculture and livestock products worth Rs 222.28 8 million have been exported from Kapurkot of Salyan and Babai temporary data collection centre of Surkhet since November 15 of the current fiscal year, he said.

Road accidents in Kathmandu Valley: 88 fatal deaths in six months

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Annually hundreds of people have been untimely losing their lives in the Kathmandu Valley due to road accident.

According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, as many as 88 people have lost their lives in 5,865 road accidents in the first six months of the current fiscal year. Likewise, 148 people were critically injured and 4,438 persons sustained minor injuries.

Most of the deceased in the accidents are motorcyclists and pedestrians. Senior vice-president of the National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs Punya Prasad (Saroj) Sitaula said that two-wheelers in the Kathmandu Valley are more prone to accidents. “High speed of motorcycles and scooters and pedestrians rampantly crossing the road have caused the highest number of fatalities in Kathmandu”, he said.

Spokesperson of Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, said that the traffic police has been conducting various awareness programs to reduce the number of vehicle accidents in the Valley. “We have been tightening the checking of alcohol consumption to reduce accidents, rules prohibiting vehicles from plying at a speed of more than 50 kilometers per hour to control speeding, checking the status of vehicles and whether there are two drivers in long-distance vehicles,” he said.

Constitutional compliance, shared responsibility-PM

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said compliance with the Constitution and institutionalization of federal democratic republic was the responsibility of all State apparatuses and stakeholders.

Prime Minister Dahal said this at a discussion with the office-bearers of the Society of Former Justices at PM residence Baluwatar this morning.

At the meeting with Chairperson of the Society Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and other former justices, Prime Minister Dahal highlighted the crucial role of ex-justices to promote constitutional compliance when some people and organizations are trying to foil social harmony in the country.

The PM also called for the ex-justices to keep vigil on the compliance of the constitution and laws in coming days as well while lauding their watch dog roles when there were assaults on the constitution and laws.

Noting that the persons bearing responsible positions of the State should not take decisions on whimsical opinions expressed on the social media, PM Dahal said decisions should be made in full compliance with the constitution and law.

According to the PM secretariat, the ex-justices recommended the PM to paly role to consolidate the existing system and enhance compliance with the constitution and laws.

NA election: Voting in progress in all provinces, results to be out today

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Voting is in progress at the designated polling stations and centres in the capitals of the seven provinces for electing 19 members of the National Assembly (NA). The 19 seats in the Upper House of the Federal Parliament are falling vacant on March 4.

The Election Commission has fixed 9.00am to 3.00 pm today for voting. It stated that counting of votes would be started immediately after the voting concludes.

Election Commission’s deputy spokesperson Shreedhar Panthi said voting is under way in all the seven provinces.

According to him, the election results would be announced today itself. The electoral college comprising the Province Assembly members and the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities, and the mayors and deputy mayors of the urban municipalities will take part in the voting.

A single vote of the Province Assembly member has a weightage of 53 and that of the chair and vice-chair of rural municipalities and mayor and deputy-mayor of urban municipalities carries a weightage of 19. The total vote weightage is 57 thousand 559.

Two thousand and forty-seven voters, including 549 Province Assembly members and 1,498 chair and vice-chair of rural municipalities and mayor and deputy-mayor of urban municipalities will cast their votes in the election.

Estranged snow leopard brought to Central Zoo 

Lalitpur, Jan 25: An injured snow leopard that was rescued from Urlabari, Sunsari in the eastern Tarai region has been brought to the Central Zoo at Jawalakhel here. The male snow leopard was found hiding in a bamboo bush at Charghare, Urlabari on Tuesday.

The Division Forest Office, Mangalbare, Morang, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, the National Trust for Nature Conservation and the Area Police Office, Sunsari together rescued the wild animal and brought it to the Central Zoo on Wednesday, said Sham Kumar Shah, the Information Officer at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.

Shah said that the snow leopard limps on its front right limb and no wounds are seen in its exterior body parts. He said otherwise the animal is in normal state.

According to him, it is unusual to find snow leopard in the tropical plain region, at an altitude of 143 metres from sea level, which is the habitat of the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Snow leopards inhabit in the mountainous region from Kanchanjangha in the east to Api Nampa in the west of the country. It is found in places from an altitude of 2,000 metres to 6,000 metres from the sea level. The snow leopard is found in 12 countries of South Asia.

National-level badminton tournament kicks off in Banke

Khajura (Banke), Jan 25: A national-level badminton tournament has commenced in Banke after a hiatus of 25 years. Sanjay Thapa, representing the Banke District Badminton Association, informed that a total of 225 participants from different departments are vying for various titles in the tournament. Banke is hosting this national badminton competition for the first time in two decades.

The tournament will continue until Saturday, featuring competitions in Men’s Singles Open, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles (B-level), and 45 plus Veterans categories.

Winners in the Men’s Singles category will receive Rs 70,000 for the first prize, Rs 35,000 for the second prize, and Rs 15,000 for the third prize. Similarly, the Women’s Singles champion will be awarded Rs 60,000, with Rs 30,000 for the runner-up and Rs. 15,000 for the third position.

This tournament boasts the highest prize amount among domestic badminton competitions, the organisers claim. The overall cost of the event exceeds Rs 3.1 million, and the tournament is being supported by the Province Sports Council.

Three succumb to viral fever in Mugu

Mugu, Jan 25: Three people have so far died of viral fever at Purumuru village of Soru rural municipality-6 in Mugu.

The deceased are identified as Hari Bahadur Shahi (72), Kriti Chantyal (75) and Kushum Dholi (24), according to local resident Karnajit Bumi. The prevailing fever is suspected to be viral.

The outbreak has affected multiple areas, including Jima, Bhiee, Natharpu, Sipa, Khyalcha, and Bumcha, in addition to Purumuru.

The District Hospital in Mugu is grappling with an influx of patients, and locals have raised concerns about the lack of medical and other support from the government. Karnajit Bumi expressed the desperation of the people in seeking assistance.

Reports indicate that local health posts are running out of essential supplies, including basic medications like paracetamol. In response to the situation, the District Health Office visited Purumuru and Jima on Tuesday, conducting health checkups for over 150 individuals.

District Hospital’s Dr Kamal Dhungana explained that the viral fever is exacerbated by the increasing cold and it is expected to take some time to bring the situation under control. Symptoms of fever include continuous sweating, headache, muscle pain, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

Energy Minister stresses on increasing electricity consumption

Patan, Jan 25: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, has underscored the need of increasing the consumption of electricity within the country.

Addressing a discussions programme on the promotion of electric cooking stove organized on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Electric Cooking Stove National Campaign in Lalitpur today, he said the electric stove is useful for every Nepali from the economic, social and environmental viewpoint.

The theme of the discussions programme is – ‘Let Us Increase the Use of Electric Stove: Let Us Contribute to Improving Health.’ 

Energy Minister Basnet said that the government has emphasized on production of maximum hydroelectricity as it is the basis for the country’s prosperity.

He suggested enlisting the participation of the private sector also by providing it with subsidies and concession in the production of hydropower for the success of the campaign.

The Minister called on all sides to be serious regarding the climate change impacts, including in the agricultural sector.

Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Gopal Prasad Sigdel said the government’s attention is centred on promoting and increasing the use of electric cookstoves to substitute the import of LP Gas through the 16th periodic plan that commences from the next fiscal year.

President of the National Federation of Community Electricity User, Narayan Gyawali on the occasion shared that together with various organisations, they have been effortful in making this campaign meaningful and successful. The campaign was launched on January 25, 2019.

UN Under Secretary-General Nakamitsu meets with Speaker Ghimire

Kathmandu, Jan 25: The United Nations Under Secretary-General and the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms Izumi Nakamitsu, called on Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, today.

During the meeting, they held discussions on the United Nations’ and Nepal’s efforts towards disarmament, the action plan on control of small and light weapons, and endorsement of the international treaty, among other topics.

On the occasion, Speaker Ghimire lauded the global initiatives undertaken by the United Nations on disarmament affairs. “I believe that the discussions held during the Asia-Pacific regional preparatory meeting will make a big contribution to the success of the fourth review meeting on the action plan related to small and light arms,” he said, adding that Nepal is ready to provide constructive contribution in this process.

House Speaker Ghimire stated that Nepal has accorded high importance to its partnership with the United Nations ever since it became the member of the world body on December 14, 1955. He viewed that the recent visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres to Nepal is reflective of the high significance United Nations and Nepal both attached to each other.

Stating that Nepal is the country where Buddha was born, Speaker Ghimire said Nepal supported peaceful resolution of conflict, non-use of force or intimidation in the internal affairs of other countries and the principle of non-interference.

Under Secretary-General Nakamitsu expressed the confidence that Nepal’s parliament will endorse the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

In reply, Speaker Ghimire said that the Parliament will do the home work on endorsing the two treaties in coordination with the government.

Australian ambassador pays courtesy call on President

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Ambassador of Australia to Nepal, Felicity Volk, paid a courtesy call on President Ramchandra Paudel at the Rastrapati Bhawan, Shital Niwas today.

On the occasion, discussions were held on bilateral relations between Nepal and Australia and on matters of mutual interest and concern, the Office of the President said.

President Paudel expressed the confidence that Australia’s cooperation for the social and economic development of Nepal-like land-locked countries will further increase in the coming days, not only in its capacity of the prosperous economy of South-East Asia and Pacific region, but as it also has importance presence in the global economic forum.

Home Minister Shrestha inaugurates CDO quarters in Kaski

Gandaki, Jan 25: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, today inaugurated the official residence of the Chief District Officer in Kaski district.

The building located at Sahid Chok in Pokhara was completed on July 15, 2023. The contract for its construction was signed on May 2, 2022. The construction contract was initially worth Rs 23 million 154 thousand and 934 whereas its final cost is Rs 23 million 365 thousand and 172.

On the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha stressed on ensuring good governance in such manner that the people feel it.

Govt preparing to announce Internal Migration Decade: Minister Bhandari

Kathmandu, Jan 25: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has said the government is preparing to announce the Internal Migration Decade from 2081 to 91 BS.

Speaking at a programme organised to launch the Nabil Skilled Overseas Entrepreneurship Loan programme here today, the Minister shared about the government preparations for observing the National Migration Decade beginning next year.

As he said, a taskforce is working on the national migration policy.  “We are responsible for preventing the plight of domestic workforce through the promotion of job creations internally. Presently, the development of an internal employment information system is underway towards that end.”  

He said though foreign employment has been a great support for the country’s gross domestic product, the exodus of workforce has caused issues in the domestic labour market. Youths are forced to go outside in lack of job opportunities at home.

He also acknowledged that government has not been able to create a favourable atmosphere for foreign migrant returnees to utilise their skills and capital back to home.  

Also speaking on the occasion, Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Kewal Prasad Bhandari said climate change and poverty are the factors promoting domestic and foreign migration.

There is a big circle of domestic migration. The statistics state that rural-urban migration is increasing, according to him.

He also took time to urged bank and financial institutions to support build a working atmosphere for foreign returnees back to home. He also advocated for a bank loan facility to those pursuing foreign employment so as to liberate them from the situation of seeking loans at an exorbitant interest rates.

This scheme launched by the Nabil Bank is targeted at those returns from overseas.

Bank chief executive officer, Gyanendra Prasad Dhungana, said the scheme will be helpful for those overseas returnees in starting income-generating business and enterprises.  It is available at a soft interest rate, a minimum service charge by keeping the proposed project as collateral. 

According to the bank, this loan is available at 1.5 percent interest rates with the ceiling of Rs 100 million.   It will be provide in four different categories and the duration of loan payment is of 10 years.

Gandaki University expanding international collaboration

Gandaki, Jan 25: The Gandaki University has expanded its relations with several academic institutions of the world in a short period of its establishment.

The University has signed memorandum of understanding with 28 various renowned universities and institutions across the globe to promote its worldwide partnership.

Registrar of the University, Dr Kailash Timilsina, informed  that the University has committed to the development of various projects and academic programmes, collaborating with the prestigious academic institutions of 12 countries.

He stated that the University has partnered with world-famous universities as California State University, the University of Central Missouri and William & Mary of America, Royal Holloway, University of London of the UK, as well as Inha University and Yeungnam University of South Korea, among others, in the meantime.

Similarly, the Gandaki University has signed agreements with Ondokuz Mayis University of Turkey, the Central Luzon University of Philippines, the Metharath University of Thailand and the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University of India.

Stating that the University’s collaboration has expanded in the international sector, Timilsina said topics like collaboration in research, curriculum development, credit transfer and student exchange programmes have been incorporated in the agreements.

Women Commission urges govt to take action on unlawful children homes

Kathmandu, Jan 25 : The National Women Commission (NWC) has drawn the attention of the government to take action against the guilty after carrying out investigation on illegally operated children homes.

Issuing a press release on Thursday, the NWC laid emphasis on the need of operating children homes in a systematic manner because it is unsafe for the children to take shelter at such facilities. Minimum standards must be met by the children homes, it added.

The NWC had carried out monitoring of Gokarneshwor municipality-based Lab Prasad Sudhar Sangh, a children home, on November 21, 2023, based on the information that it was running illegally and the children were at unsafe condition. It then recommended the bodies concerned to immediately rescue the children from there. 

After the monitoring, the report prepared by the Commission mentioned that the children home had involved the children physical, sexual and criminal activities, which it argued, was sheer violation of children’s rights.

99 percent voter turnout in NA election

Kathmandu, Jan 25 : The Election Commission has informed that voting for 19 members of the National Assembly (NA) was held in a peaceful manner today. In the scheduled voting conducted from 9:00am to 3:00pm, the voter turnout was 99 percent, EC added.

The vote count had already begun in the offices of respective election officers and final result of vote count would be announced on Thursday itself, EC added.

According to a press release issued by EC Spokesperson, Shaligram Paudel, there were total 549 voters from all seven Province Assemblies, among which, 546 cast votes. It is 99.45 percent turnout.

Similarly, from the local levels (rural municipality, municipality, sub-metropolis and metropolis), there were total 1,497 voters, among which, 1486 cast vote. It was 99.97 percent turnout. 

In total, the voter turnout was 99.32 percent, according to the EC.

SC releases full text of directive order to amend NHRC Act

Kathmandu, Jan 25 : The Supreme Court recently released a full text of the directive order it had issued asking the government to amend the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Act for its reform.

The directive order was issued by a division bench of Justices Sushma Lata Mathema and Hari Prasad Phunyal. With the order, the government has been asked to amend NHRC Act in order for the NHRC to make its activities effective.

In the order, the government has been demanded to make public human rights violators and to ban recommendation and appointment of such violators in the constitutional bodies. It also directed for prosecution of human rights violators directly by Attorney General as per NHRC recommendation.

The directive order was issued in September in response to a writ petition filed five years back regarding lack of effective implementation of recommendations by NHRC. The petitioner had claimed that section 13 (3) of Investigation of Enforced Disappearances Persons, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act, 2014 was inconsistent with the constitutional provision providing the function and powers of NHC vis-à-vis Article 249 of Constitution of Nepal.

The petitioner advocate Birendra Thapaliya had demanded NHRC’s jurisdiction to investigate upon the cases of human rights violations during armed conflict.

All candidates of ruling alliance win NA election in Bagmati Province

Makawanpur, Jan 25: All candidates of the ruling alliance have been elected in the National Assembly election in Bagmati Province. The NA election was held for 19 seats across the country on Thursday.

Bishnu Kumari Pudasaini of the Nepali Congress won the election receiving 6,622 vote weightage.

Similarly, Ghanshyam Bishwokarma of the CPN (Unified Socialist) won the election towards Dalit category receiving 6,512 weightage. Likewise, Jit Jung Basnet of the Nepali Congress has been elected NA member acquiring 6,531 vote weightage towards other category while Shreekrishna Adhikari of the CPN (Maoist Centre) got 6,436 vote weightage towards disabled category.

Out of 347 voters in Bagmati Province, the voter turnout was 342.

‘Mass Media and Inclusive Journalism’ released

Kathmandu, Jan 25: A book entitled ‘Mass Media and Inclusive Journalism’ penned by journalist Taramani Sapkota has been released.

The book presents the theoretical aspects of inclusion and statistical analysis of the current state of inclusion in government media and professional organisations.

At a programme organised here Thursday, Chairperson of the National Inclusive Commission, Dr Ram Krishna Timilsina and Chairperson of Indigenous Nationalities Commission, Ram Bahadur Thapa, jointly released the book.

On the occasion, Chairperson Timilsina laid emphasis on the need of observing inclusiveness. Inclusiveness is not only the community representation but also geographical and ideological reflection. 

Inclusion in diversity and national and international policy is equally important, according to him. Similarly, Chairperson of the Indigenous Nationalities Commission, Thapa, mentioned that all state bodies and media were facing impacts in lack of policy formulation and inclusion in implementation level.

Commenting on the book, Executive Chairperson of the  and former President of the Federation of the Nepali Journalists, Dharmendra Jha, said the book shows the fact that though the Nepali society is diverse, it is not reflected in media.

Chair Jha clarified the theoretical aspects of the inclusion and stated that the book had statistically shown whether inclusion is practiced at media organisations. “Although the book is based on study on human resources in media sector, there was no research on inclusion of news contents,” he observed, suggesting research on diversity and inclusion of news contents.

Likewise, another commentator and Chairperson of the Sancharika Samuha, Bimala Tumkhewa, and former President of the FNJ, Shiva Gaunle, said the book had shown the fact that news room and media organisations were still eluding inclusion.

Students to get textbooks before new academic session in upcoming year too

Kathmandu, Jan 25: The school-level students across the country are sure to get their textbooks before the commencement of the new academic year in the upcoming academic year, thanks to ongoing progress in the printing of the textbooks from the Janak Education Materials Centre.  

A team of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat carried out the monitoring of the textbook printing jobs and directed the Centre’s officials to accomplish the tasks before the new academic year in May.

For the first time in the history, the students got their textbooks with the admission into the new class in the current academic year after the instruction of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to meet the deadline.

During a meeting with the monitoring team from the PMO, Centre’s Managing Director Anil Kumar Jha said they were committed to supplying the school textbooks in time. “Papers needed for the (books) printing have been bought and the printing jobs is ongoing round the clock with two shifts in a day. Supply of books in the depots is also being carried out simultaneously,” Jha said.

Printing of the textbooks has advanced with the government decision to print books of grade one to five in the private printing press and the books of grade five to 12 in the Centre.  

Likewise, the Curriculum Development Centre has already issued a tender notice to select the printing presses from the private sector.

According to the Centre, it has left to print just 6.5 million textbooks out of total 17 million books needed from grade five to 12.   The Centre is preparing to print some 70,000 to 80,000 textbooks each day.

PM Prachanda’s Public Relations Expert Buddhi GC, Personal Joint Secretary Gokarna Bhatta, Joint Secretary Sangita Ojha and other officials made a surprise visit to the Centre in Bhaktapur on Thursday and instructed the Centre to ensure quality in the textbook printing, protect the printed textbooks and ensure proper utilization of the printing papers.

Candidates of ruling alliance win NA election from Karnali Province

Karnali, Jan 25 : All three candidates of the ruling alliance won the National Assembly (NA) election from Karnali Province. 

Bishnu BK of CPN (Maoist Centre) under the ‘Dalit’ category, Sabitri Malla of CPN (Unified Socialist) under the ‘women’ category and Krishna Bahadur Rokaya of Nepali Congress (NC) from ‘other’ category emerged victorious, Assistant Election Officer Ujjawal Dev Rawal announced this evening.

BK won the election by getting 3,817 vote weightage against CPN (UML)’s Hikmat BK, who got 1,267 vote weightage. Likewise, Malla got victory by securing 3,722 votes against her rival UML’s Bimala Kumari Shahi. The Election Commission said NC’s Rokaya emerged victorious by garnering 3,870 vote weightage against UML candidate’s 1,214 vote weightage.

In the election held from 9 am at Birendranagar-based Office of the Karnali Province Office of Election Commission, a total of 40 province assembly members, and 56 chiefs and deputies of the local governments cast their votes in the NA election.

NA Election: Voter turnout in Karnali Province 100 percent

Kathmandu, Jan 25:  The Karnali Province has recorded 100 percent voter turnout in the National Assembly election held on Thursday. All 40 Province Assembly members and 156 voters from local levels (rural municipality and municipality) voted in the NA election from Karnali Province.

Similarly, the voter turnout from Koshi Province Assembly members for the National Assembly election was 100 percent. The Election Commission (EC) informed that there were 93 voters from Koshi Province Assembly where all of them cast votes in the NA election. However, from the local levels (rural municipality, municipality, sub-metropolis and metropolis), the voter turnout was 99.27 percent.

Similarly, in Madhes Province, the voter turnout from Province Assembly members was 99.07 percent, while from local levels 100 percent. In Bagmati Province, the voter turnout from Province Assembly members was 98.18 percent, while from the local levels, the voter turnout 98.73 percent.

Moreover, Gandaki Province recorded 99.41 percent voting, while Lumbini Province 99.8 percent. A total of 98.68 percent voters attended election in Sudurpaschim Province. Of 228 voters, 225 votes were cast.

The EC extended gratitude to all political parties, candidates, voters, employees, security personnel, media and all bodies concerned for conducting the election in free, fair and fearless environment.

High court upholds district court order to keep Rahul in custody

Kathmandu, Jan 25: High Court Patan has upheld the District Court Kathmandu’s order to keep Rahul Mahara in custody for investigation.

A division bench of judges Anju Upreti Dhakal and Dipendra Adhikari on Thursday upheld the verdict of the District Court Kathmandu.

Rahul Mahara, son of CPN (Maoist) leader Krishna Prasad Mahara, is in custody for investigation on gold scam. The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police had arrested Rahul on the charge of his involvement in the scam. The District Court Kathmandu had issued the order to keep Rahul in custody, rejecting to release him on bail.

Rahul had moved the High Court against the decision of the District Court Kathmandu, but in vain.
