10 people killed in road accident in Kapilvastu

Chandrauta (Kapilvastu), Feb 15: Ten people have died in a road accident that took place near the Surahi Bridge in Shivaraj Municipality-1 of the district early today.

The accident took place when a passenger bus (Su-Pa-Pra-02-001 Ba 0098) operated by Sunaulo Mahakali Transport fell some 200 meters below from the road on its way to Kathmandu from Mahendranagar at around 1:00 am.

            According to Kapilvastu District Police Office, 10 people died on the spot in the accident. The identity of the deceased is not yet known. Likewise, 30 others were injured in the accident, of which nine have been rushed to Butwal, said Police Inspector Navaratna Paudel. The remaining are undergoing treatment at local medical centres including the Sanjeevani Hospital.

World Social Forum 2024 kicks off today

Kathmandu, Feb 15 (RSS): The World Social Forum 2024 begins in the federal capital here today, under the theme “Another World is Possible.”

The Forum began in 2001 as an alternative to the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland. It was first held in Porto Alegre, Brazil with its roots emerging out of the Global South such as the 1992 Earth Summit held in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

The Forum serves as a vital platform for open and horizontal exchange among civil society organisations, social movement, trade unions and individuals opposing neoliberal globalization. This edition of the WSF will focus on a myriad of pressing issues including economic inequality, climate justice, labour, migration, caste discrimination, gender equality, peace, sustainable development and many others, to engage in dialogue and actions that challenge neoliberal globalization and promote a more equitable, sustainable, and just world.

Since its inception in 2001, the WSF has been a beacon for social movements, union and activists to come together, share experiences, and build strategies for change. The Kathmandu Forum represents a significant milestone, showcasing the resilience and diversity of global solidarity movements. It offers a unique platform for discussing solutions to many pressing global issues such as economic inequality, climate change, social justice and the rights of indigenous peoples.

More than 1252 organizations from 92 countries are expected to take part in person and virtually in the five-day Forum that will feature thematic panels, self-organized activities, cultural programmes, and opportunities for networking and collaborative action.

As the world faces unprecedented challenges, the WSF 2024 aims to foster discussions, share experiences, and formulate strategies for a more equitable and sustainable future, according to a press release issued by the Forum Nepal Organising Committee.

The event will open with a Solidarity March scheduled to be held at 110:00 am starting from the main venue, Bhrikutimandap and passing through Bhandrakali, New Road Gate, Ratna Park and back to Bhrikutimandap. The opening ceremony scheduled to take place at Bhrikutimandap at 3:30 pm will be followed by a panel discussion featuring international speakers on various themes and subjects.

A series of thematic panels, assemblies and activities on 13 different themes including among others economic inequality and the global financial system, gender equality and women’s rights, labour rights and migration, peace, justice and human rights are being held under the Forum to conclude on February 19.

Manebhanjyang retains Pabitrahang Gold Cup

Fikkal (Ilam), Feb 15: Defending champion Manebhanjyang Football Club, Darjeeling, India has retained the Pabitrahang Women’s Football Gold Cup.

In the final match of 14th edition of Pabitrahang Women’s Football Gold Cup tournament held at the Atmananda Stadium in Mangsebung Rural Municipality on Wednesday, Manebhanjyang won the title by defeating Kankai Municipality, Jhapa by 3-1 goals. Prior to this, Manebhanjyang had won the 13th edition by defeating Miklajung, Morang.

Manebhanjyang’s Simran Gurung scored the first goal in the 22nd minute of the game while Sushmita Lepcha doubled the lead with a goal through a header in the second minute of the second half. However, Kumari Tamang of Kankai scored a goal in the seventh minute of the second half to bring the match to 2-1.

However, Simran Gurung doubled her score in the injury time to give her team a 3-1 victory. Gurung was also declared the best player of the final match. She received Rs 5,000 in cash.

Along with the title, the winner Manebhanjyang received a trophy with Rs. 300,168 in cash. Kankai won Rs 200,168 in cash along with the runner-up trophy.

A total of eight teams from Nepal, India and Bhutan participated in the competition held from February 7. The tournament was organised by Atma-Pabitra Hakchat Yakthum on the occasion of the 68th birth anniversary of Kirat Dharmaguruama Sanwa Pabitrahangma.

Public holiday tomorrow in Gandaki

Kaski, Feb 15: A public holiday has been announced in Gandaki province tomorrow to mark the Gandaki Provincial Government Establishment Day.

The Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers has issued a notice stating that all government offices, educational institutions and public institutions across the province will remain closed on Friday. Spokesperson of the Office Praveen Dhakal shared that as per the decision of the Province Council of Ministers, a notice regarding the holiday has been published in the Provincial Gazette.

The day the first chief minister of the Province, Prithvi Subba Gurung, assumed office after the first provincial government was formed through the election of the provincial assembly is observed as the establishment day of the government every year.

On the Establishment day, the provincial government is scheduled to organize a variety of events including a morning procession, foundation day celebration main programme and an illumination in the evening.

ICC World Cup League: Nepal to bat against Namibia

Kathmandu, Feb 15: Nepal has been invited to bat first after losing the toss against Namibia in the inaugural match in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League-2 triangular one-day cricket series.

Namibian captain Gehard Erasmus won the toss and chose to field first in the toss held at the TU Cricket ground in Kirtipur.

Nepal’s playing XI includes captain Rohit Kumar Paudel, Asif Sheikh, Kushal Bhurtel, Kushal Malla, Pawan Sarraf, Bhim Sarki, Anil Kumar Shah, Gulshan Jha, Sompal Kami, Karan KC and Lalit Rajbanshi. On the bench are Surya Tamang, Dev Khanal, Dipendra Singh Airi and Arif Sheikh.

Likewise, Namibia’s playing XI includes captain Gerhard Erasmus, Zane Green, JJ Smit, Michael van Lingen, Jan Nicole Loftie-Eaton, Jan Frylinck, Ruben Trumpelmann, Nikolaas Davin, Tangeni Lungameni, Jack Brassell and Bernard Scholtz.

Netherlands is the third team in the first series of the 24 tri-national series. Eight teams, including Nepal, will participate in the League-2, which will run until 2027.

Humanitarian assistance continues in Nepal, with cash support to disaster survivors: IFRC

Kathmandu, Feb 15 (RSS): Direct cash support by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has proved very helpful for the immediate uplift of the communities hit by the earthquake in Sudur Paschim and Karnali.

The charity-based organization IFRC has adopted a policy of immediate cash support to uplift the communities hit by a disaster. Accordingly, IFRC has provided cash support to the survivors of earthquakes in Sudurpaschim and Karnali.

According to the policy of the Nepal government, IFRC has provided through the Nepal Red Cross Society Rs 87,000 per family including Rs 50,000 for the construction of temporary housing, Rs 15,000 for the purchase of essential items and Rs 15,000 for the construction of toilets and water tanks in Doti, Bajhang, Bajura, Rukum Paschim, Jajarkot and Salyan districts.

Head of Delegation of IFRC in Nepal Azmat Ullah said since a small amount of cash support can help a disaster-stricken community significantly we have also adopted a policy of providing cash support in coordination with the Nepal Government and the Nepal Red Cross.

He said that as per the IFRC mandate humanitarian assistance will continue for disaster survivors for relief and recovery. Accordingly, the IFRC has been providing housing and non-food items including emergency housing, tarpaulin, mattress, blankets, health (psycho-social counseling, hygiene, livelihood and essential items to the earthquake survivors in an integrated manner.

            According to the report of December 2023, IFRC provided non-food items to 4,865 families of Karnali earthquake victims (Rukum West, Jajarkot and Salyan), mobilized 392 Red Cross volunteers, provided 7,500 sanitation items, psychosocial counseling to 2,355 people among others.

NC Central Working Committee meeting today

Kathmandu, Feb 15: The central working committee meeting of the Nepali Congress is being held today at 1:00 pm at the party’s central office Sanepa. The meeting is scheduled to discuss the preparation of the Mahasamiti meeting of the party to be held at Godavari in Lalitpur from February 19 to 23.

NC Central Office Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel said that the meeting will focus on the issues of the upcoming General Committee meeting. The party has also requested the office-bearers, members and invitee members of the party’s central working committee to attend today’s meeting.

Kapilvastu bus accident update: Ten deceased identified

The deceased have been identified as Narayan Bahadur Bhandari of Rautahat, Arjun Kumar Yogi of Salyan, Sakil Muslim of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, Rahulram Kami, Umesh Bhandari, Sanju Thapa, Khageshwari Khati and Sudeep Bhatta of Bhimdatta Municipality, Kina Bhatt and Bimaladevi Bhatt of Punarwas Municipality.

Out flow of money from Nepal for higher education should be stopped: PM Dahal 

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said the ‘economic out flow’ from Nepal-like countries of the South for higher education should be stopped.

            Addressing the inauguration programme of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) – North Zone Vice Chancellors’ Meet 2024 & Bharat-Nepal Higher Education Summit today, he underscored on making efforts for retaining within the country itself a majority of the youths and the resources they have. 

            “There is a huge out flow of money from countries like Nepal on higher education and this trend should now be reversed. We should create an environment conducive for those youths seeking opportunities globally,” PM Dahal said, pointing out the need of re-evaluating the internationalization of higher education.

            Stating the education sector is struggling against the challenges brought by global forces, the Prime Minister said the latest trend of students and intellectuals getting drawn to the universities of the North is seen as they have invested much resource in skill and education development.

            “The balance of higher education is seen tilted towards the North.  Although the education system of the North has attracted international students due to the expensive budget, this situation cannot last long,” PM Dahal further added.

DPM Shrestha directs police officers to carry out works being free of undue pressure

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister, Narayankaji Shrestha, has directed the police officers to face administrative and security challenges in accordance with the laws, becoming free from any unwarranted pressure and influence.

            Issuing special instructions today to the 34 Superintendents of Police who are assigned as the district and office chiefs in various districts following their transfer, he urged the officers to carry out their duty with dedication, making a deep analysis of the security situation in coordination with the provincial and local governments.

            DPM Shrestha directed the police officers to take effective measures for drugs control and taking action against the drug traffickers, to conduct awareness programmes amongst the youths against drug abuse and trafficking and to develop the reform centres.

            Stating that the government has been carrying out remarkable works in the social justice sector, he issued instructions to bring to book if any middlepersons are found in the name of usurious lending.

            The DPM and Home Minister asserted that the Ministry has pursued a policy on transfer based on the capability, work efficiency and opportunity, and not on the basis of political proximity and various interests.

            He also called on the police officers to forsake the practice of influence-peddling and of offering bribe through middle persons to get the responsibility of the office chief, and of defaming one’s colleague in case of oneself not getting that responsibility.

            The Ministry of Home Affairs had, on February 13, transferred 34 police superintendents, including of 22 district police offices, seven police battalions, four traffic police offices and one other.

            Ministry Secretary Dinesh Bhattarai and Inspector General of Police, Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, among other high officials were also present on the occasion.

            DPM Shrestha has initiated the practice of issuing the required instructions to the administrative and police officers before they go to assume their responsibilities. Before this, the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister had called the chief district officers who were assigned new responsibilities to the Ministry and directed them to fulfill their responsibilities paying attention to the government priorities.

PM Dahal reiterates South Asia’s intellectual heritage is capable of addressing global issues

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said the rich intellectual heritage founded on native and indigenous knowledge systems of the South can help provide answers to the global problems today, be it the question of medicine, lifestyle or peace.

            In his address to the Association of Indian Universities AIU-North Zone Vice-Chancellors’ Meet and the Bharat-Nepal Higher Education Summit, in Dhulikhel today, the Prime Minister made this remark.

            In the meet themed “Globalization and internalization of higher education” and hosted by the Kathmandu University, he said, “We must do away with the south versus north divide purely based on economic parameters. Rather, we must think of ways to connect the south and north by finding common grounds.”

             According to the Prime Minister and the University Chancellor, the gathering, therefore, has great significance to devise a higher education manifesto for the global south.

            “I believe that this meet will be a starting point for harnessing our own resources to contribute to the global order, which is changing anyway. 

            Kathmandu University is leading the way from Nepal in writing such a manifesto. In its 32-year history, Kathmandu University has served as a beacon in this endeavor, with its commendable efforts in internationalization and the expansion of academic programs,” he added.

Eleven Indian nationals rescued

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: A police team from the District Police Range Kathmandu has rescued 11 Indian nationals from captivity. They were reportedly brought to Kathmandu by human traffickers for sending them to America. 

            The special squad rescued them last night from local Ratopul area, said the Range Chief, Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupendra Khattri.

            “Our team has rescued the Indian nationals who were brought to Kathmandu, stating they would be taken to America, and held in captivity. The detailed information about this would be made public later today,” he said.

KMC brings IHIMS, requiring health facilities to submit monthly report online

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: The health facilities operating within the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) are required to submit their monthly report online.

            The health facilities registered as private or community hospitals and polyclinics in all the 32 wards of the KMC have to submit their monthly reports via the online system, said the KMC Officiating Departmental Chief, Sajina Maharjan.

            According to her, KMC has started providing the ‘username’ and ‘password’ of the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS) for this purpose. She said the KMC Health Department is also preparing to impart training to the related staff of health facilities on the workings of IHMIS.

            Maharjan said the Health Management Information System (HMIS) was implemented before this and now HMIS is being refined and developed into IHMIS.

            KMC believes this system will help regulate and manage the health facilities operating in the metropolis. KMC has been conducting regular monitoring since some days for further managing health institutions.

Consensus needed among political parties for achieving prosperity: Speaker Ghimire

            Morang, Feb 15: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has underscored on the need of all political parties to move ahead with consensus for achieving prosperity.

            Talking briefly to the media at Biratnagar Airport today, the Speaker of the lower house of the Federal Parliament said that the political parties needed to move ahead on the basis of consensus in plan formulation and implementation on the common topic of nation building.

            He called on the political parties and all citizens to unite against the efforts being made to foment dislike towards the present political system.

            “Information has been received that the government is preparing to introduce 61 bills in the current session of the parliament. Therefore, the parliament will not have any shortage of business,” the Speaker said and expressed the belief that the current session of parliament would be fruitful.

16th conference of World Social Forum kicks off

            Kathmandu, Feb 15: The 16th conference of the World Social Forum has commenced in Kathmandu from today.

            The four-day WSF 2024 under the banner of “Another World is Possible” aims to open horizontal exchange among civil society organisations, social movements, trade unions and individuals opposing neoliberal globalization.

            This is the first time the WSF is being held. A march-past was organized from Bhrikutimandap, the venue of the conference. The event opened with a Solidarity March starting from the main venue, Bhrikutimandap and passing through Bhadrakali, New Road Gate, Ratna Park and back to Bhrikutimandap.

            The participants of the march carried banners and placards with slogans in support of justice, peace, equality and end to discriminations written on them.

            Various national and international organisations related to different sectors and rights expressed their solidarity in the march.

            The organisers said some 40 thousand people from 92 countries will participate in the WSF. Dr Netra Timilsina, a member of the organising committee, said so far the participation of ILO Asia Pacific Region General Secretary Shoya Yoshida, human rights campaigner and activist of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, Medha Patkar, Latin American social activist Aleda Guevera, among the speakers, has been confirmed so far.

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League-2: Namibia trounces Nepal

Kathmandu, Feb 15: Namibia defeated Nepal by four wickets in an opening match held under the triangular series of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League-2.Wining the match held at the Kirtipur-based TU Cricket Ground today, Namibia has garnered two points.  Chasing a target of 133 runs posted by Nepal, Namibia met it in 33.1 overs at the loss of six wickets.

In Namibia’s victory, Jan Nicolaas Frylinck scored the highest 34 runs including four fours in 53 balls. Similarly, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton scored 31 while Michael van Lingen contributed 23 to the teams followed by 15 from the Nicholas Davin.

Towards bowling, Sompal Kami took three wickets while Lalit Rajbanshi took two. Similarly, Rohit Kumar Paudel dismissed one batter.

Prior to this, Nepal was invited to bat first losing the toss and finished the first innings scoring 132 in 41.1 overs at the loss of all wickets. For Nepal, Bhim Sarki scored the highest 44 to the team in 86 balls with two fours and one six. Similarly, Gulshan Jha made 21 runs along with three boundaries in 31 balls. Karan KC added 16 including three boundaries in 38 balls.

Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel could score just one run in 13 balls.

Kushal Malla hit 15 runs with one boundary and one six in 22 balls. Sompal Kami was out with two runs in his name while Kushal Bhurtel failed to score any run. Similarly, Pawan Sharraf contributed 12 to the team followed by eight from Anil Shah and four by Asif Sheikh.

In course of containing Nepal to 132, Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus took five wickets while Jack Brassell and Ruben Trumpelmann took two wickets each. Nepal will meet the Netherlands on Saturday for the second match.

Burglary worth Rs 6.5 million, five Indians held

Kathmandu, Feb 15: The jewelries and cash combined which worth Rs 6.5 million were looted from a house of Dilmaya Alemagar from Makalbari, Gokarneshwor municipality-4, Kathmandu.

Superintendent of Police at Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Rabindra Regmi, informed that five Indian nationals were arrested in this connection after the victim Alemagar filed a complaint.

The break-in was committed in the pretext of garbage collection on February 11. They had broken door and made away with the cash and jewelries.

The burglars were made public on Thursday.The investigation revealed that the arrested ones had stolen gold and cash amounting Rs 2.5 million from a house of Dinesh Ghimire, Budhanilakantha, Kathmandu.

The police also informed that it confiscated jewelries and cash worth Rs 410 thousands from a house of Gita Rai, a residence of Gokarneshwor municipality.

RSS employees show talent

Kathmandu, Feb 15:  Employees’ Association organised a ‘talent show’ on the occasion of 63rd anniversary of RSS.At a programme organised in the RSS premises on Thursday, RSS Executive Chairperson Dharmendra Jha, General Manager Siddharaj Rai, different chiefs, journalists and employees presented their talent. Poem, haiku, caricature, songs and dances were performed on the occasion. 

Chairperson Jha also shared that initiatives were taken to augment quality and trustworthiness of RSS service. In the past, RSS management leaders had launched new initiatives on different occasions, and the incumbent management has also forwarded schemes to make RSS more dynamic, he mentioned.

Chair Jha stated that the media organisation achieved the expected results amidst limited means and resources and challenges till its 63rd years’ of journey. “The organisation becomes dynamic if employee organisations become vibrant. Such type of creative programmes organised for the progress and welfare of the organisation will be helpful to make the organisation alive”, he stressed. 

Similarly, General Manager Rai laid the emphasis on active role of different organisations at RSS for its development, adding various schemes were put in place for quality service.

Association Chairperson Pabitra Gurugain explained the objective of the programme. Deputy General Managers—Shyam Prasad Rimal and Somnath Lamichhane—Chief Editor Yekraj Pathak, English Desk Chief Dipraj Sanyal, International Desk Chief Dillip Adhikari, RSS Employees Union, Kalika Khadka, among others recited poems, and haiku in the event.

Japanese envoy pays courtesy call on VP Yadav

Kathmandu, Feb 15: Japanese Ambassador to Nepal, Kikuta Yutaka, paid a courtesy call on Vice-President, Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, on Thursday.

During the meeting held at the office of the Vice-President at Lainchour on Thursday, they discussed various matters, including bilateral relations and financial cooperation, according to the Vice-President’s Office.

On the occasion, VP Yadav said Japan is an important and reliable development partner for long for the socio and economic developments of Nepal.

He mentioned, “Japan has been providing financial and technical supports to Nepal. We want to be benefitted from Japan’s experience, knowledge, skill and technology in various sectors, including industry, agriculture, hydropower and infrastructure developments.”

Sharing that there is a friendly relations between the two countries, the Japanese Ambassador expressed commitment that there would be continuous support of Japan to Nepal, according to the Vice-President’s office.

Lalita Niwas land grab: 12 convicted, Gachchhadar acquitted

Kathmandu, Feb 15: The Special Court on Thursday convicted a dozen of people in the case of Lalita Niwas land embezzlement.

A joint bench of judges Khusi Prasad Tharu, Ram Bahadur Thapa and Ritendra Thapa not only convicted 12 persons but also declared that the land registered and transferred under 65 individuals would be sequestrated.

Special Court spokesperson Dhan Bahadur Karki informed that the verdict delivered warranted the land back and recovery of the loss incurred over embezzlement of Lalita Niwas public land.

As per court order, Ram Kumar Subedi, Shova Kant Dhakal, owner of Bhatbhateni supermarket, Min Bahadur Gurung, then secretaries at land ministry, Chhabi Raj Pant and Dip Basnyat and even the family of Subarna Shumsher have been found guilty. Others in the list of convicts are Kaladhar Deuja, Surendra Man Kapali, Yukta Prasad Shrestha, Jagat Prasad Pudasaini.

Rs 19.6 million would be collected as recovery combined from then secretaries Chhabiraj Pant and Dip Basnyat and then employees of land revenue office and land reform office for embezzling 19 ropanis of land.

Meanwhile, the court has given a clean chit to then Minister for Physical Infrastructures, Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, then Ministers for Land Reform, Dambar Bahadur Shrestha and Chandra Dev Joshi in this case.

Similarly, then Secretary Dinesh Hari Adhikari also got acquitted. The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority had registered a corruption case at the Special Court on February 5, 2020, citing 113 ropanis of public land of Lalita Niwas was transferred and registered in the names of individuals.

The CIAA had made defendants to 175 people, including four former ministers and three former secretaries in this case.

Korean Language Test to begin on February 19

Kathmandu, February 15: The Employment Permit Section Korea under the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) is conducting the Korean Language Test (KLT) from February 19. According to EPS Korea, the exam will be held at National Vocational Training Academy, Bhainsepati.

Director at EPS Korea Maiya Kandel said that exams will be conducted in five shifts in a day and arrangements have been made to conduct exams for 1,000 students each day. 

“Arrangements have been made to run exams on Saturday as well. Around 47,000 students can take their KLT in the first shift,” Kandel added.

The students should appear for the biometric registration of their finger prints a day before at the EPS Korea Section Office at Gwarko, Lalitpur. And the biometric would be verified at the examination centre.

Maoist Centre’s Statute passed with amendment

Kathmandu, Feb 15: The statute of the CPN (Maoist Centre) tabled by party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at the party’s first Statute Conference was passed with amendment on Thursday.

The amendment statute was prepared based on the recommendations received from group-wise discussions.On the occasion, Chairman Dahal expressed the confidence that the party would now move ahead in a new manner adding that crucial recommendations were received from the leaders to refine the statute.  Chairman Prachanda added that the feedback received at the party’s Statute Conference would be instrumental in defending and developing the party. 

He also shared that the CPN (Maoist Centre) would now begin the preparations for the special general convention after the completion of the Statute Conference. On the occasion, Chairman Prachanda stated that the party would elect its committees through the direct electoral system on the basis of people’s democracy from the upcoming general convention. 

He also announced that the Maoist Centre would form a 199-member central committee and 11-member central office-bearers from the upcoming general convention.Likewise, the party’s statute would be drafted to make the province committee more effective and also the issues of federalism and proportional system would be made further effective.

Chairman Prachanda stated that the issue of party’s name and election symbol would be decided in a certain time and added that the name could be changed in case of unification of more and more communist parties but it would be kept unchanged for now.

Furthermore, the Maoist Centre Chairman shared that the party’s different fronts would be given more autonomy along with ideological training and the sister organizations would be expanded.  The participants were divided into 20 different groups in the conference, which started on Tuesday at Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

During the conference, the leaders had offered their suggestions on party leadership, formation of directly elected committee, unification with other likeminded political forces, strengthening party organization, issues of governance and others.

Senior litterateur Chand receives civic felicitations

Sudurpaschim, Feb 15: Senior litterateur and former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand has received civic felicitations at Dhangadhi of Kailali district on Thursday. During a formal programme organized by the Civic Felicitations Main Organizing Committee, Chand was felicitated for his outstanding contributions to the Nepali literary field.

Committee Coordinator Maya Prakash Bhatta honoured the former PM by handing over a letter of appreciation. On the occasion, two dozen of literary associations including Sudurpaschimanchal Literary Society and Sudurpaschim Academy honoured Chand.According to Bhatta, the civic felicitations programme was organized on the occasion of 84th birth anniversary of Chand.

Popularly known as Shreelochan among Nepali literary fraternity, Chand had won Madan Puraskar in 2054 BS for his anthology of stories ‘Bisarjan’.Born at Sunarya Rural Municipality of Baitadi district, Chand has published his 14 literary works including ‘Hiyuko Tanna’, ‘Ratri Bhoj’, ‘Aparajita’ and others.

RSS anniversary: Launch of news in Maithili language stressed

Rajbiraj, Feb 15: The district office of  in Saptari organized a programme to observe RSS’ 63rd anniversary on Thursday.The speakers at the programme underlined the need for RSS to launch news service in Maithili language as well.

Lawmaker at Madhes Province, Satish Kumar Singh, viewed RSS has played a significant role on development of Nepali media.

He suggested the State-run media to write news against corruption as well. Singh expressed worry over journalists’ departure from profession owing to low and no payment.

Madhes Province Chief of RSS, Tika Ram Sunar, viewed RSS is committed to well inform public. He had prioritized the news on development activities in Madhes.

Press freedom fighter and noted journalist Bidyanath Jha said journalist should also carry on profession responsibly. He observed that RSS used to write news about government while it has been writing about people in the wake of change in system.

FNJ district chapter chair Shravan Kumar Dev and chair of Maithili Literature Council, Avadesh Kumar Jha, stressed that RSS should disseminate news in Maithili language.Council chair Jha further said Council would also extend support if RSS launched Maithili language service.
