Heavy rainfall likely in Bagmati and Gandaki today

Kathmandu, July 31: There is a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces today.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at a few places in the Tarai region of Lumbini and one or two places in the remaining Tarai including Madhesh Province.

This afternoon, the weather will be generally cloudy in the hilly areas of the country including Lumbini and Sudupaschim Provinces and partly cloudy in the Tarai region.

Later, tonight the weather will remain generally cloudy in the hilly areas of the country including Koshi, Madhesh and Sudurpaschim Provinces and partly cloudy in the Tarai region. There is a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at a few places in the hilly areas of the country including Madhesh and Sudurpaschim Provinces and one or two places in the remaining Tarai region.

Currently, the influence of monsoon winds is active across the country, adds the Department.

Five parliamentary committees meeting today

Kathmandu, July 31: Five different parliamentary committees of the federal parliament are meeting today.

The Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee under the House of Representatives is meeting at 11:30 am to discuss the Bill designed to amend some land-related laws in Nepal, 2082. Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Balram Adhikari, officials of the Land Commission, experts in the field of land, forests and law are expected to take part in the discussion.

Similarly, the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee is meeting at 1:00 pm to discuss the suggestions related to the Sixth National Action Plan on Human Rights and the Nepal Lawyers Council (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081.

Furthermore, the Statute Management Committee, Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee and the Federalism Enablement and National Concerns Committee under the National Assembly are meeting today. The Good Governance Committee is meeting at 11:30 am to discuss the works done by the Water Supply ministry to solve the drinking water problems seen in various areas across the country, including Madhes Province.

The meeting of the Legislative Management Committee is being held at 1:00 pm to hold clause-wise discussion on the Water Resources Bill, 2081. The National Concerns Committee is meeting at 11:00 am to discuss the progress of national pride projects under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, problems faced and efforts to solve them, among others.

Shrawan 15: Celebrated by savouring kheer

Kathmandu, July 31: Today, Shrawan 15th in the Lunar calendar, is being celebrated in Nepali society by eating kheer or rice pudding.

“With farming including paddy plantation done during this month of rain and greenery, cows and buffaloes also produce more milk with abundance of green fodder. When there is more milk, it is customary to make Kheer, and invite friends and families to savour it. This is also considered good for health,” says Dr Ramchandra Gautam, a theologian and former chair of the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee.

Kheer is made from rice, savdhana, sewai, corn, carrots, etc. The Nepali Brihat Sabdakosh defines kheer as ‘rice cooked in milk, or a delicious food made by cooking rice with milk sugar and spices.’

The National Dairy Development Board also celebrates Shrawan 15 as Kheer Eating Day or Kheer Day.

RSP parliamentary party meeting: Corruption to be protested on the streets and in the parliament 

Bhairahawa (Rupandehi), July 31: The parliamentary party meeting of the Rastriya Swatantra Party concluded in Bhairahawa on Wednesday with a review of the current session of the parliament, cooling-off period, and the work of constitutional bodies.

Attended by 15 lawmakers including party’s acting chair DP Aryal, the meeting also discussed from a multi-faceted perspective the ongoing parliamentary activities in the parliament, including the issue of corruption held under the cover of visit VISA, that the party has been raising in the parliament, said party chief whip Santosh Pariyar. “The interference of the executive and other parties in the legislature including those related to the cooling-off period in civil federal bill led the RSP to establish the people’s issues in the parliament.”

Pariyar also said that the RSP is serious about the concerns of tourism entrepreneurs in Lumbini and will raise the issue, including the operation of the Bhairahawa international airport, in the parliament.

He said that the agitation would become broader in scope, insisting that corruption would be protested on the streets and in the parliament.

One person killed in road accident

Katari, July 31: One person has died in a road accident that took place in Andheri of Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality-7.

In the accident involving a truck that took place this morning, the truck driver, Jeevan Bishwakarma,35, of Bagaha in Triyuga Municipality-4 died, according to the District Police Office, Udayapur.

 Driver Bishwakarma, heading to Kathmandu from Itahari, was seriously injured in the accident and died during treatment at the District Hospital Udayapur.

Agro Ambulance to take agricultural produce to market

Dhorpatan (Baglung), July 31: Jaimini Municipality has purchased an agriculture ambulance to transport agricultural produce to the market.

Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said that the municipality has purchased an ambulance for Rs. 5 million by adding the same amount received from the federal government.

The agriculture ambulance will be used to serve the 500 agricultural firms, agricultural cooperatives and farmer groups active in the municipality, with 4,000 families involved in agricultural production.

Sharma also said that the municipality has been providing grants, training and technical assistance to attract youth and inspire farmers to commercial agriculture production.

The municipality has established an agricultural produce collection center in Kushmisera in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernization Project and has constructed a chilling center in Damek Sarkuwa.

Kaligandaki road blocked by landslides

Gulmi, July 31: The Kaligandaki road has been completely blocked due to a landslide. The road was blocked after a landslide with a large rock fell in Gargare and Mulk of Kaligandaki rural municipality this morning.

Security personnel have been mobilized from the Purtighat police post to help clear off the debris, said Ganga Bahadur Saru, Information Officer of the District Police Office. Efforts to open the road for traffic by removing the landslide debris are ongoing.

Province Chief off to KTM after emergency illness

Bagmati, July 31: Bagmati Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota has left for Kathmandu after taking ill of a sudden. As a result, the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed ministers scheduled for this afternoon has been postponed.

The oath-taking ceremony has been postponed until further notice, the Office of the Province Chief has stated.

It may be noted that on Wednesday, Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama had appointed Provincial Assembly members Govinda Lamsal as Minister for Internal Affairs and Law, Maya Shrestha as Minister for Youth and Sports, and Geeta Gurung as Minister for Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation and recommended them to the Province Chief for taking oath of office and secrecy, before officially assuming their post.
