Bus accident at Ainapahara along Prithvi Highway

            Damauli, Aug 3: A passenger bus fell off the Marsyangdi River at Ainapahara of Aanbukhairani Rural Municipality-2 along the Prithvi Highway in Tanahun district this afternoon.

            According to police, the bus (Ga 2 Kha 1077) on its way to Narayanghat from Gorkha plunged into the river.   

            Police Inspector Tek Prasad Subedi said that five injured persons were rescued and rushed to the Aanbukhairani Hospital. 

            Police shared that rescue operations are ongoing. Details of the accident are awaited.

Women organizations voice against drafting of polygamy laws 

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: The women’s organizations of different political parties have asked the government not to draft any laws to allow polygamy.

            Issuing a press statement today, the leaders of the women’s organizations said that their serious attention was drawn to the drafting of new laws, which they termed as a regressive law formulated against women. “Such an attempt made to amend the laws was unacceptable,” they warned.

            They have vowed to take to the streets while asking the government not to formulate such discriminatory laws, stating that it was against the spirit of the Constitution of Nepal.  

            The women’s organizations have urged the government not to draft such laws allowing polygamy in some cases, adding that such laws could further increase inequalities against women and could severe suppression and violence against women.   

            Acting Chairwoman of All Nepal Women’s Association Menaka Pokhrel, Chairwoman of All Nepal Women’s Association (Revolutionary) Amrita Thapa, Chairwoman of All Nepal Women’s Association Mina Pun, Chairwoman of All Nepal Women’s Association (Revolutionary) Bandhu Chand, General Secretary of All Nepal Women’s Association (Socialist) Rajendra Laxmi Gaire and joint-coordinator of Revolutionary Women’s Association Nepal Sharada Mahat released the joint press statement urging the government not to draft the laws to allow polygamy.

UML seeks written suggestions for statute convention

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: In view of the upcoming statute convention, CPN (UML) has directed its subordinate committees and sister organizations to provide suggestions on the proposed statute amendment.

            The request for written suggestions has been made based on the decision of the ninth meeting of the central committee held on July 21 and 22.

            Following the meeting’s decision, Chairman KP Sharma Oli sought suggestions from the subordinates regarding the proposed amendments to be presented at the second statute convention scheduled to be held in Godavari, Lalitpur on September 5 and 6.

            Similarly, in-charges, chairmen, and general secretaries of 23 organizations under the party have been asked to hold secretariat meetings to prepare suggestions on the statue.

            The sister organizations of the party have been sought to have uniform understanding for the decision of the central committee, the circular, and the preparations for the statute general assembly. Such unified view would help leadership make Mission-2084 successful, according to leader Bhanubhakta Dhakal.

Int’l conference on climate change on Aug 18-19

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has informed that an international conference on climate change would be organized on August 18-19 to draw global attention on the impact of climate change in Nepal.

            Speaker Ghimire shared it at a news conference held at Tribhuvan International Airport upon his arrival from Switzerland. The Speaker returned home on Sunday after attending the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland. He also informed that discussion was held on organizing similar event- on impact of climate change in Asia Pacific region- coming January 30-31. “The Conference was informed about Nepali lawmakers’ preparation to hold the significant event,” he shared.

            Ghimire had left here on July27 to attend the ‘Sixth World Conference of the Speakers of Parliaments’ organized by the IPU in collaboration with the United Nations in Geneva.

            The event was organized from July 30 to August 2. During his stay, Speaker Ghimire had bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries, including UK, Switzerland, Malta, Israel and Bhutan.

Good governance prerequisite to democracy: NC leader Koirala

            Morang, Aug 3: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said good governance is an essential element to strengthen democracy in the country.

            Speaking at the Mukti Prasad-Yadunath Chapagain Award handover ceremony here Sunday, leader Koirala expressed the view that if the leaders of political parties are honest, it would ensure successful implementation of the federal republic.

            Member of the House of Representatives, Koirala urged the party line not to forget principles, otherwise democracy will face crisis.

            The programme was organized the Gurans Library in Biratnagar.

            In another context, the NC leader mentioned that he does not think the current government should change but it must work transparently and accountably.

            “The citizens have piled hope on the current coalition government, so it is responsible for elevating the living standard of citizens,” he reminded, adding that role played by Yadunath Chapagain was instrumental in achieving democracy in the country. We can follow the path Chapagain treaded.

            Chairman of the Library, Ranjit Prakash Budhathoki, former chairman Deepak Chapagain, and litterateur Dinesh Raj Subedi spoke on the significance of the Gurans Library and the role of the Chapagain family in the democratic frontier.

            The learning facility was established at Baragachi, Biratnagar-4 in 2027 BS. Former minister Hari Sapkota, Mohammad Ansari, and Dr Pramila Gachhadar were honored on the occasion.

Bagmati Province CM Lama resigns

            Bagmati, Aug 3: Amid intra-party tussle in the Nepali Congress, Chief Minister of Bagmati Province, Bahadur Singh Lama, has announced resignation at a press conference organized at Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers in Hetauda on Sunday.

            He shared that although he went to submit his resignation this evening at the Office of the Provincial Chief in Hetauda, Provincial Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota was not present in the Office.

            Chief Minister Lama is scheduled to submit his resignation letter to province chief tomorrow.

            After losing parliamentary party leader post to another leader Indra Bahadur Baniya on July 30, Chief Minister Lama resigned from his post. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba also directed Lama to step down after losing the post of parliamentary leader.

            Chief Minister Lama, however, informed the media persons that he thought it was appropriate to establish political values and norms and work under the direction of party leadership. He was resigning in line with this spirit, Lama added.

            CM Lama expressed commitment to move forward in agreement and cooperation under the leadership of the newly elected parliamentary party leader in Province Assembly, Indra Bahadur Baniya.

No issue raised on leadership option in Maoist Centre, Spokesperson Sapkota

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: Most of the leaders who shared their views at the ongoing standing committee meeting of the CPN (Maoist Centre) have backed the party leadership and called for making the leadership efficient and strong.  

            CPN (Maoist Centre) Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said that no one has put views on seeking an option to Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ as the party chairman.

            The SC meeting of the Maoist Centre that kicked off on Friday at the party headquarters is ongoing.

            Sapkota shared that most of the SC members said that the time has not come to seek an option to the party leadership.

            Spokesperson Sapkota shared that the SC meeting would take place on Monday as well.

            CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Prachanda, senior vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha and general secretary Dev Prasad Gurung would share their views on Monday, Sapkota said.

Bamboo campaigner Mayor Bhattarai breaks hunger strike

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality Tirtharaj Bhattarai ended his hunger strike on Sunday.

            Mayor Bhattarai was on a hunger strike at Maitighar area in Kathmandu since July 30 by putting forth his demand for promotion and consumption of bamboo goods and other locally-available agricultural products.

            Bhattarai broke his hunger strike following an agreement on his demands in the presence of Minister for Health and Population Pradip Paudel and Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri.

            As agreed, the Urban Development Ministry would give a final touch to the bamboo building code to welcome the use of bamboo products in the construction works.

            Likewise, Khotang district would be declared the hub of bamboo and the district would be promoted as a zone for bamboo study and promotion.

            The agreement includes buying bamboo products with top priority in the agencies under the Ministry of Forest and Environment in the first phase and implementing the guidelines approved by the government for the purchase and use of domestic goods.

            Earlier, Bhattarai had put forth 7-point demands before the federal government, including the erasure of legal hurdles that ban the use of bamboo in furniture and building. He demanded the policy-level decision of the federal government on the promotion of the use of multi-purpose bamboo so that even the local levels would be forced to use and promote it.

            Together with this, he had also demanded to force the plastic companies to pay a 10 percent in tax to the local levels.

World’s Indigenous Day to be celebrated for a week

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) has decided to celebrate the 31st International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples for a week.

            NEFIN’s President Gelje Lama Sherpa informed that they would observe the Day for a week. He shared it at a press conference on Sunday.

            The week-long programme will begin from August 9. NEFIN General Secretary Divas Rai mentioned that in addition to the main event to be organized at National Conference Hall of Bhrikutimandap, there will have cultural pageantry reflecting diverse identities of indigenous communities. Display of native food items will also feature during the celebration, he added.

Rains elates drought-hit Madhes

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: To a much relief to the drought-hit Madhes province, the rainfall occurred well in the last 24 hours.  The farmers welcomed the rains, cultivated land, and transplanted paddy seedlings on Sunday.

            Although the eastern belt of country witnessed adequate rains, the Tarai region had light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours, said the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, adding that the eastern Tarai did paddy plantation with the adequate rains.

            Meteorologist at Weather Forecasting Division, Binu Maharjan, informed that the Tarai region had the rainfall because the low pressure belt of monsoon was on the northern side of its average range- towards Nepal. However, there is cloudy weather across the country and rainfall was partial.

            The Anarmani Birta Station of Jhapa district recorded the rainfall at 151.6 ML in the last 24 hours.

            Some places in most of the provinces saw heavy rainfall during the day on Sunday. Currently, the rainfall is occurring in Koshi and Madhes provinces.

            The rainfall watch centres across the country recorded over 50ML rains.

Unity of communist parties needed, Madhav Kumar Nepal says

            Kathmandu, Aug 3: Chairman of CPN (Unified Socialist) and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that polarization among the leftist forces was the need of the time to streamline Nepal’s communist movement.

            Addressing a programme organized by the party’s central election commission on Sunday, the former Prime Minister said unity of the like-minded communist parties was required to lead the country and people towards a progressive path.

            On the occasion, he shared that efforts were ongoing for the unity among the ideologically similar communist parties.

            He also voiced for ending corruption, poverty and unemployment in the country to promote good-governance.
