Kapilvastu, Dec 8: Vice-Chair of the National Assembly Bimala Ghimire said the ‘digital’ violence has surfaced as a significant hurdle for women who are already confronting gender-based violence.
In her address to an event ‘Interaction on the Proper Use of Digital Technology’, hosted today by Badganga Municipality in Kapilvastu, she highlighted that improper use of information technology has compelled young women, sexual minorities, and members of vulnerable communities to encounter new forms of violence.
Vice Chair Ghimire pointed out that a growing number of young women are becoming increasingly hesitant to express their opinions on social media platforms due to hostile comments, harassment, and disrespectful responses.
“Digital violence has a profound impact not only on an individual’s mental well-being but also on their social engagement, self-esteem, career prospects, and leadership skills,” she noted.
“With the evolution of digital technology, new forms of violence are likely to arise, posing a threat of character defamation against women, female leaders, journalists, public officials, and other prominent figures. It is crucial to recognize and address this issue promptly.”
