Haze prevailing in Terai; Light rain and snowfall likely in high mountainous area

Kathmandu, Jan 2: With the partial influence of western winds continuing across the country, most parts of the Terai region will experience haze and fog, while some provinces will have partly cloudy weather this afternoon, the Meteorological Forecasting Division stated.

Currently, most areas of the Terai are covered with haze.

According to the division, hilly and mountainous areas of the country will have generally cloudy weather this afternoon, while the remaining areas will be partly cloudy.

There is a possibility of light rain in a few places of the hilly areas of Koshi and Gandaki provinces and light snowfall in some places of the higher hilly and mountainous areas.

Similarly, tonight, hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces will be partly cloudy, while the weather in the remaining areas will mainly be clear.

There is a possibility of light snowfall in one or two places of the higher hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

Some areas of the Terai will have haze. The Meteorological Forecasting Division has warned that due to the impact of haze in the Terai region, daily life, health, and road traffic may be partially affected.

The division has cautioned the general public to take necessary precautions and keep updated with the daily forecasts.

02-       Russian Foreign Minister congratulates newly-appointed Foreign Minister Sharma

Kathmandu, Jan 2: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has extended congratulations to Foreign Minister of Nepal Bala Nanda Sharma on his appointment.

In a congratulatory message sent on Wednesday, Lavrov said that relations between Russia and Nepal have traditionally been friendly and constructive.

He reaffirmed his readiness to work jointly to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the interests of the peoples of both countries.

The Russian Foreign Minister also wished Foreign Minister Sharma for his good health and every success in carrying out his responsibilities, the Russian Embassy here stated.

03-       62 days to go for polls: EC seeks applications from firms for transporting election materials

Kathmandu, Jan 2: The Election Commission (EC) has urged the concerned side for transporting most essential election related materials for the upcoming March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) elections.

For the transportation of the election materials, helicopter, truck, and container will be used.

The EC has urged the firms and companies operating courier services to get enlisted for the purpose of delivering election related materials. Interested firms or companies are requested to apply for the enlistment after completing all required conditions.

The Commission has requested the submission of copies of the certification (permission) obtained from the relevant authority to operate the service, VAT registration certificate, tax clearance certificate up to the fiscal year 2081/82, and the certificate of turnover for the past three fiscal years.

The firm or company providing helicopter rental service must have minimum average annual turnover of Rs 30 million in the past three fiscal years.

Those providing trucks and container service must submit turnover details of Rs 10 million, and for courier services, Rs 3 million.

Companies interested to provide courier services must submit an application along with the details of their courier offices and representatives in all 77 districts, including telephone and mobile numbers.

The Commission has stated that if an application for enlistment is submitted in more than one category, such application will not be processed. The Commission holds all rights to take the decision regarding the enlistment of service providing firm or company, it is stated.

04-       Condolence book placed to mourn the passing of leader Zia

Kathmandu, Jan 2: The Bangladesh Embassy here has placed condolence book at the embassy since Thursday to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia.

Former Prime Minister Zia had passed away on last Tuesday.

The embassy stated that on Thursday it had sent letters to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions in Kathmandu, and other international organizations, informing them that a condolence book had been placed.

The embassy also stated that arrangements have been made for signatures on the condolence book from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day until January 5 (Monday), except Saturday.

The letter has invited diplomats, government officials and members of the international community working in Nepal to express their condolences and sign the book.

05-       Accidents on rise along under-construction highway

Jhapa, Jan 2: Scooter rider Laxmi Saha, 33, died when a loaded truck hit her scooter on Paliya Bridge at Mechinagar-6 along the under-construction Asian Highway on Thursday night.

The truck (PB 02 BR 7765) had hit the scooter (Pr 1–01–013 P 5888) while she was on the way from Kakadbhitta to Birtamod.

Information officer at the District Police Office, Khagendra Bahadur Khadka shared that Saha, a local of Mechinagar–6, was critically injured in the accident.

She was immediately taken to Mechi AMDA Hospital in Dhulabari for treatment, where the doctors declared her dead, Khadka further informed. 

The police took control 36-year-old truck driver Sandeep Singh from Punjab, India, and held him at the local police office.

The public have complained about the distress caused due to the haphazard diversion on the under-construction Asian Highway and the uneven road.

On the evening of last December 20, two young people died in a motorcycle accident at a diversion near Buttawari Tea Garden in Birtamod–6.

The public have also complained for not properly placing and maintaining diversion and signposts, and the unmanaged road conditions on the Kankadbhitta–Birtamod section along the highway.

Journalist Sabitra Dahal from Kankai-6 and Evan Luintel from Mechinagar-9 said that they met with accident on the highway due to poor diversion.

Dahal and Luintel have recently returned home after recovering their health following a long hospital stay. —
