Kathmandu, Jan 8: Any complaints against candidates who have filed their nominations for the National Assembly member election to be held on January 25 can be filed today, according to the election programme made public by the Election Commission.
The registration of candidates’ nomination papers was completed peacefully at the offices of the election officers in all seven provincial capitals on Wednesday, shared the Commission’s Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.
According to the election program, the nomination papers and complaints, if any, shall be examined and the list of candidates will be published on January 9 and 10, the candidates will withdraw their names and publish the final list of candidates on January 11, and the election symbols will be given to the candidates on January 12.

02- First Madhes Province Invitational Mayor Gold Cup to be held in Lalbandi
Sarlahi, Jan 8: The First Lalbandi Madhes Province Invitational Mayor Gold Cup 2082 is to be organized in Lalbandi, Sarlahi.
Lalbandi Municipality is the main organizer of the competition to be held from January 30 to February 10. A total of 12 teams, including four from inter-provincial clubs, will participate in the competition, said Jeeveshwor Youth Club President Dipendra Budhathoki.
The winner of the competition will receive Rs 300,000 in cash prize while the runner-up will receive Rs 150,000 along with a shield, medal and certificate. Budhathoki said that players will be awarded in five other categories in the competition, including Player of the Match in every game.
The tournament is also expected to promote sports tourism in Nawalpur area, said Bishnu Adhikari, coordinator of the Municipal Sports Development Committee and ward chairman of Lalbandi Municipality-17.
The participating teams include Jeeveshwor Youth Club of Sarlahi, Birgunj United of Parsa, Ratanpur United of Bara, Nepal Sports Club of Rautahat, Byagngkhadi Youth Club of Mahottari, Dhanusha-11 of Dhanusha, Golbazar Sports Club of Siraha, New Triyuga Sports Club of Saptari, Gaighat Youth Club of Udayapur, Inaruwa Football Club of Sunsari, Bharatpur Football Club of Chitwan and Makawanpur District Football Association of Hetauda.

03- Radar Level Sensor installed to measure water level in Radha stream
Kanchanpur, Jan 8: A radar level sensor (RLS) has been installed in Radha stream, the main tributary of the Chaudharnadi river flowing through Bedkot Municipality in the district. The RLS technology has been established to measure water level in the river with the aim of making the flood early warning system effective.
The technology was installed under the SMART project run in partnership with the Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction, DCA Nepal and Nepal National Social Welfare Association, Kanchanpur, said project coordinator Raj Kumar Sunar.
According to him, the technology installation was carried out in collaboration with the Hydrology and Meteorology Office, Attariya and Bedkot Municipality.
The radar level sensor installed in the river will collect real-time data on the water level of the river and feed data, said coordinator Sunar. This will provide timely early warning of possible floods during the rainy season, helping protect the lives and property of citizens in the downstream areas of Bedkot, Bhimdatta Municipality, and Beldandi Rural Municipality.
Bedkot Municipality Mayor Bhojraj Bohara said that the municipality has been prioritizing the use of modern technology for disaster risk reduction. He expressed confidence that this new technology will help the local community reduce the damage caused by floods and help in disaster management.

04- Fourth International Yam Festival in Bahundangi
Jhapa, Jan 8: A two-day International Yam Festival is going to be organized in Bahundangi Bazaar of Mechinagar Municipality-4 on the occasion of Maghe Sankranti from January 14 to 15.
The festival is being organized by 14 government and non-government organizations and will see exhibition of traditional foods including yams from Nepal, India and Bhutan. According to Arjun Karki, Ward Chairman of Mechinagar-4, who is also the chair of the organizing committee, , this is the fourth time that the Yam Festival is being organized in Bahundangi.
The organizers have stated that 18 types of traditional foods made from yams are to be exhibited at the festival. The festival is being organized with the participation of the Koshi Province Government and the Tourism Office Kakadbhitta with the support of UNDP, ICIMOD, WWF, and other NGOs.
Around 50,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which will also include musical performances by folk artists Daisy Baraili and Kamalikanta Bhetwal.

05- Sixth Indigenous Nationalities Cultural Festival begins in Tanahun today
Damauli (Tanahun), Jan 8: The 6th Indigenous Nationalities Tanahun Cultural Festival is starting here today. The festival is being organized by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities District Coordination Council, Tanahun and will run until January 19.
President of the Federation, Sanam Tamang, informed that the festival is being organized to preserve language, culture and promote tourism. The festival will help in preserving the culture of the ethnic groups of Tanahun as well as promoting religious and tourist sites here.
The Federation started the Indigenous Nationalities Festival in Tanahun, with 65 percent of the population being indigenous. The first Indigenous Nationalities Festival was organized in 2065 BS.
Along with a model house, the cultural tableau, indigenous dance, ethnic dress exhibition, local dishes, handicraft stalls, musical programs and various awareness-raising programs will be organized in the cultural festival.
According to the organizers, the festival aims to raise Rs. 1.5 million, which will be used to build a museum.
Model houses of Magar, Darai and Kumal communities have been constructed as the main attraction of the festival to be held in Byas Municipality-3.

06- Call for recruitment of 139,000 Election Police personnel
Kathmandu, Jan 8: Nepal Police has called for applications from those interested and eligible to be recruited as Election Police personnel for the upcoming March 5 House of Representatives elections. The Police Headquarters issued a notice today, calling applications for a total of 133,980 positions.
Applications for the Election Police personnel can be submitted to all 77 District Police Offices from tomorrow i.e. January 9 to 15. The Police Headquarters has stated that the age of the candidate should between 18 to 54 years by the last date for registering the application form.
Nepali citizens, who can read and write, who have not been convicted by a court for any criminal offense, who are not members of any political party at the time of recruitment, who are physically and mentally healthy, and who are not members of terrorist and destructive organizations are eligible to take part in the recruitment process, shared Nepal Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abinarayan Kafle.
Individuals who have applied for various positions in various security agencies, such as the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, or former forest guards and security organizations and have passed the physical fitness and health tests will be selected as election police officers.
Similarly, those who have been recruited as temporary police officers in the previous elections to the House of Representatives, Provincial Assemblies, and local levels and have performed satisfactorily, and Nepali citizens who have retired after working in security agencies of foreign friendly countries, will also be selected as election police officers.
The term of office of the election police personnel will be 40 days from the date of appointment or as prescribed by the Government of Nepal.
The election police personnel will be paid Rs 34,776 for 40 days at the rate of Rs 869.40 paisa per day, similar to the starting salary scale of Nepal Police constables. They will also receive food allowance for 40 days.

07- Shankharapur road accident: Death toll reaches five
Kathmandu, Jan 8: The death toll in the road accident that took place on the road at Jaharsinghpaua in Shankharapur Municipality-3, Kathmandu, has reached five.
Four people died yesterday and one more person succumbed to his injuries today, taking the death toll to five, shared District Police Range Kathmandu Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai. Another 28 people have been injured.
The deceased have been identified as Kamana Sharma, 49, of Kohalpur Municipality-5, Nepalgunj; Indira Limbu, 51, of Pathibhara-5, Taplejung,; Shanti Gupta, 55, of Siraha, Devendra Limbu, 65, of Panchthar, and Arjun Lamichhane, 60, of Jorpati, Kathmandu.
The road accident involved a passenger bus (Ba 4 Kha 8788) operated by Mahanagar Yatayat that fell off the road at Jaharsingh Pauwa while returning from a picnic for staffers of Nature House and Herb International Company.
Of the injured, 23 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu and five have returned home after treatment.
