HoR election: Printing of ballot papers over for FPTP category in 60 constituencies

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The Election Commission (EC) has informed that printing of ballot papers for the first-past-the-post category in 60 constituencies has been over.

Assistant Spokesperson at EC, Kul Bahadur KC, informed RSS that total 7.26 million sheets of ballot papers were printed for the direct election of the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. Similarly, packing of the printed ballot papers for 25 districts has completed so far.

Except few districts of Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces, the ballot paper printing is accomplished. Total 20.32 million sheets of such papers are required for FPTP category of election.

The ballot papers for the proportional category have already been printed. The printing is going on at Janak Education Materials Centre.

EC has given priority to the districts in remote and mountainous regions. Preparation is afoot to send all printed ballot papers by February 15.

22-       Make election human rights-friendly: NHRC

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all the bodies concerned to make the upcoming election to the House of Representatives human rights-friendly by fully adhering to the election code of conduct.

The upcoming election to the House of Representatives is taking place on March 5. Stating that it has been monitoring the human rights situation on the run up to the HoR election, NHRC requested everyone to make the election friendly to human rights.

At a discussion held on Thursday with the chiefs and representatives of different organisations monitoring the election, NHRC stressed effectiveness of election monitoring and observation, according to NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel.

The citizen’s right to voting in a confidential way should not be violated. If any audio and video record is made on voting and uploaded it on social platform, it breaches voter’s privacy, NHRC said, adding that contents produced and disseminated to offend others’ dignity, is sheer violation. It should also be monitored well, NHRC underlined. 

The human rights watch body also showed concern over some candidates and offices of some political parties violating the election code of conduct.

23-       Ujjyalo Party devotes to creating employment: Chair Ghising

Mahendranagar (Dhanusha), Feb 5: Chairman of the Ujjyalo Party, Kulman Ghising, has said his party will move ahead by keeping good governance, transparency and development in centre.  

Speaking in a press meet organized here Thursday, Chairman Ghising shared future action plan of the party that it would devote to creating employments for youths.

He further committed to bringing special plans for Madhes Province. Alternative political forces are needed to address public disenchantment, according to Ghising.

24-       ‘Press Council Award’ to newspapers published continuously for 50 years

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The Press Council Nepal has decided to present the ‘Press Council Award’ to the newspapers that have been published continuously for 50 years.

A board meeting of the Council held at Salyantar of Dhading district took such decision, reads a press release issued on Thursday by the Council’s senior administrative officer and spokesperson, Deepak Khanal.

The meeting also decided to revise the procedure relating to award so that the award distribution would be transparent and effective. Similarly, the board discussed Council’s programmes organised so far in the current fiscal year, its progress, election code of conduct and contemporary issues of journalism, reads the press release.

The media are appealed to fully implement election code of conduct in order to hold upcoming election to the House of Representatives scheduled for March 5 in a free, impartial, transparent and calm environment.

25-       ‘Voting essential to a party committed to national future’

Patan (Lalitpur), Feb 5: Spokesperson of the Nepali Congress, Devraj Chalise, has said it is time to vote for a political party that is responsible for country’s future.

At a press conference organized at party central office, Sanepa on Thursday, Spokesperson Chalise drew the attention of Election Commission towards the misuse of children by some political parties in electoral campaigning. Spreading hatred towards opponent candidates draws equal concern, he said at the press conference held in view of the upcoming House of Representatives election.

“Entire party is concentrated in election. There won’t be electoral alliance with any political party this time. We organize dialogues to frustrate the misleading information about the party,” he shared, arguing that public trust was increasing in NC.

The Spokesperson further said significant activities were carried out by the governments led by NC.  “Although it is right from human rights view point that some ministers of the present government resigned from the post and became electoral candidates, it is morally wrong practice,” Chalise viewed.

26-       Girl students to be vaccinated against cervical cancer from Sunday

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The Ministry of Health and Population is conducting a nationwide vaccination programme for the school girls (Grade 6) against cervical cancer from coming Sunday. The vaccination is against the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Chief of Child Health and Immunization Section in the Ministry, Dr Abhiyan Gautam, informed that Grade 6 girl students and those of 10-year age group remained out of the school would be jabbed against HPV. The campaign would continue till February 27.

Even those who had missed the vaccination during the last year campaign would be incorporated this time. They would be the girls from Grade 7 to 10, and the adolescent girls of 11-14 year age group left out of the schools.

Dr Gautam further informed that the vaccination would be conducted at the respective schools and health institutions. The health workers were also given training for the immunization drive.  The jabs have reached the concerned district offices from the province offices. Nearly 350 thousand girls would be vaccinated against HPV this time. Medicinal assistance is received from the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization.

27-       Constituency watch: Election fever grips Kathmandu constituency-4

Kathmandu, Feb 5:  “Youths should be provided opportunities of education and health. People’s affordability and access are important for it,” said Sneha Dahal, a voter of Kathmandu constituency-4. While talking to RSS, she added the people’s representatives we are electing soon should be able to work on these important issues.

Dahal’s expectations match the expectations of most of the voters.  With the election to the House of Representatives round the corner- less than a month- the political parties have intensified their campaigning and trying to woo the voters in their favour. Kathmandu constituency-4 has been at the centre of political discussions for the past few years. It covers four wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and 12 wards of Budhanilkantha municipality of Kathmandu district.

As in other constituencies, there is competition between old and new political parties and independent candidates here. A total of 28 candidates, including 18 from political parties and 10 independents, are in the electoral fray.

Gagan Thapa, President of the Nepali Congress, had won the election for three times from this constituency. However, Thapa is contesting the election from Sarlahi-4. It too has been a matter of discussion.

Similarly, the CPN (UML) has fielded its candidate Dr Rajan Bhattarai this time too. The Nepali Congress has fielded a new candidate Sachin Timalsena, while Pukar Bam is contesting from Rastriya Swatantra Party.

Bam had earlier contested from Kathmandu constituency no. 8 and 1.  Other candidates are Indra Kumar Bhusal of the Nepali Communist Party, Surendra Raj Bhandari of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Chhabi Bahadur Khanal of the Rastriya Janamorcha, Asha Lal Shrestha of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Chet Bahadur Ale of the Rastriya Janamukti Party, Sita Tamang of the Mangol National Organization, Prem Kumar Rai of the Miteri Party Nepal, Shyam Kumar Bhattarai Khatri of the Nepali Party for Nepal, Datta Budha of the Progressive Democratic Party, Muskan Poudel of the United Nepal Democratic Party, Rajan Puri of the Jai Mathribhumi Party, Barun Amatya of the Shram Sanskriti Party, Karishma Kharel of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), Jhanak Bahadur Adhikari of the Ujjyalo Nepal Party, and Kemsingh of the Janadesh Party.

Similarly, Mandev Acharya, Pujan Gajurel, Archan Shumsher Rana, Binod Babu Pradhan, Dr Dipendra Kumar Kafle, Kedar Bahadur Karki, Manoj Adhikari, Ashish Shrestha, Sanjeev Darjee and Devraj Poudel are independent candidates.

Of the total candidates, two are women. Kathamndu-4 has 76,141 voters. This constituency is populated by medium and intellectual class employees, businessmen and workers. Naxal Bhagawati, Kumarigal, Gaushala, Dillibazaar, Gyaneshwor, Chapali, Mandikhatar, Kapan and Paiyatar, among other places belong to this constituency.

Election Officer Krishna Bhandari, deputed in Kathamndu-4 from the Election Commission, shared that there are 33 voting centres and 88 polling stations in this constituency. Bhandari, however, mentioned that the election fever has not yet gripped Kathmandu-4 because the election publicity period (February 16-March 2) determined by the Election Commission is yet to come.

Integrated urban development, landless problems, river and heritages conservation, parking, sewerage and drinking water management are some major issues of Kathmandu constituency-4.

Candidates here have given priority to control flooding in Kapan, a feasibility study for the construction of Kalopul-Gaurighat tunnel, and smooth vehicular movement by opening the obstructed Guheshwori-Tilganga road.

28-       Nepal defeats Canada

Kathmandu, Feb 5: Nepal defeated Canada by six wickets in the second warm up match held today in the lead up to the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2026.

In the match held in Chennai, India, the team Canada chose to bat first after winning the toss, and gathered 161 runs in 20 overs by losing 6 wickets.Nepal met the target of 162 runs in 18 overs by losing four wickets.

Nepal’s Ashif Sheikh contributed 58 runs with six fours and three sixes in 29 balls.

For bowling, Sandeep Lamichhane and Kushal Bhurtel took two wickets each, while Sompal Kami and Nandan Yadav took one each. In the first match, Nepal had defeated UAE by seven wickets.

Nepal is scheduled to play its maiden match of the ICC T20 World Cup against England on February 8 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

29-       Political parties, candidates should unveil election manifestos for publicity campaigns 

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The Election Code of Conduct 2082 has stated a mandatory provision for the political parties and candidates to release their election manifestos prior to launching their publicity campaigns for the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) scheduled for March 5.

Clause 37 of the Election Code of Conduct mentioned that the candidates and political parties should unveil their election manifestos for publicity campaigns. As per the provision, publicity for the election would begin on February 16.

Assistant Spokesperson of the Election Commission (EC) Kul Bahadur GC shared that no political party has submitted the election manifesto as of Thursday.

The political parties should submit their election manifestos to the EC and the candidates should submit to the concerned Election Office in their constituencies.

Likewise, the political parties and the elected candidates should release their progress report every year for public notice as stated in the election manifestos, GC added.

30-       March 5 poll will be held in single phase, PM assures

Bhaktapur, Feb 5: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) will be held across the country in a single phase on March 5 in a peaceful manner. “Get assured. The election is coming near. The election will be held in a single phase and in a single day. The election will be on the slated date,” according to the PM.

After an inspection visit to the Janak Education Materials Centre Limited at Sanothimi in Bhaktapur, where the ballot papers are being printed, the PM told the journalists that there will not be the election in the second phase in any of the districts.

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal accompanied Prime Minister Karki to inspect the Janak Education Materials Centre Limited.  She shared her excitement to the ongoing progress on ballot paper printing and praised the officials of the printing facilities.

The PM said that the nationwide election fever has increased and the Election Commission (EC) has an equal role in this effort. Likewise, she hoped that the weather conditions on March 5 would be generally fair.

The voters will get right to vote and the new government will be formed after the announcement of the final results. Similarly, Minister Aryal said the environment for elections was created across the country and political violence and conflicts have reduced gradually.

He also reiterated that the polls will be held at the slated date on March 5 adding that the government was fully committed to the citizen’s safety and security.Minister Aryal said that additional security provisions have been arranged to conduct the polls in a free, fair and fearless manner.

31-       Govt to mark Democracy Day for three days

Kathmandu, Feb 5: The government on Thursday decided to mark this year’s Democracy Day in a grand manner for three days. The Democracy Day will be marked for three days on March 18, 19 and 20.

A meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sushila Karki decided to mark Democracy Day for three days, forming the main organizing committee.

The Prime Minister will chair the main organizing committee, while ministers, all mayors of the Kathmandu Valley, the Chief Secretary of the government, the Chief of Army Staff, secretaries of the government and chiefs of the security bodies have been named as members of the committee. The Secretary of the Home Ministry will serve as the member-secretary of the main organizing committee.

As per the decision, different programmes will be conducted across the country for three days and in Nepal’s diplomatic missions abroad.

32-       Eight die, 45 receive injury in bus accident

Baitadi, Feb 5: Eight people died on the spot when a bus carrying wedding procession met an accident in Baitadi on Thursday evening.

The deceased were identified as Keshav Raj Joshi, 40; Ashok Raj Joshi, 13; Basanta Joshi, 35; Bisan Dutta Joshi, 41; from Bitthadchir rural municipality-7 of Bajhang; Mohan Dev Bhatta, 60, of Kedarsyu rural municipality of Bajhang; Basanta Raj Ratala, 40, from Jayprithvi municipality of Bajhang, and Pushpa Awasthi from Purchaudi-7 of Baitadi district, said Spokesperson of Baitadi Police, Police Inspector Baldev Badu.

The accident took place at Purchaudi-7 at 8:00 pm Thursday when the bus (Su Pa Province 02 001 Kha 1119) heading towards Sunkuda of Bajhang from Purchaudi municipality-7 of Baitadi fell some 150 meters off the road. The bus was carrying a bride along with wedding procession after the ceremony.

Similarly, 45 others who were injured in the incident have been sent to a local health post. Of them, 27 are men and 18 are women.
