Order to submit documents related cancellation of Sah’s candidacy

            Kathmandu, March 9: The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to appear on March 10 with the file regarding the cancellation of the candidacy of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) candidate Kishori Sah Kamal in Dhanusha Constituency No. 1.

            A single bench of Justice Nripadhwaj Niraula today ordered not to make public the voting results in Dhanusha 1, where the candidacy of RSP candidate Sah was cancelled. The counting of votes has been completed.

            The defendants in the case have been asked to submit a written response through the Attorney General’s Office within seven days of the date of receipt of the order along with the reasons for the same.

20-       ANFA’s attention drawn towards footballers’ lockout 

            Kathmandu, March 9: The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has said that its serious attention has been drawn towards the padlocking of its central office at Satdobato, Lalitpur by disgruntled footballers.

            Issuing a press statement here today, the country’s governing body of the football said that administrative business have been obstructed due to the lockout and called upon the concerned side to withdraw the lockout immediately.

            Footballers associated with the Nepal Football Players Association had padlocked the ANFA’s office building last Sunday, putting forth various demands including payments for the sportspersons, prize money and players’ welfare fund, among others.

            The ANFA said that efforts were underway to address the demands of the agitated players in line with the prevailing rules and procedures.

            The statement mentioned that allowances and service facilities that are provided to A Division club players when they participate in the national team are clearly specified.

            It also pledged to provide prize money and other pending payments to players gradually according to the rules.

            Cautioning that the lockout could negatively affect the football related activities, the ANFA appealed with the concerned parties to resolve the issue through a dialogue.

21-       Sitaula detained for inappropriate conduct against Gauradaha Mayor

            Jhapa, March 9: Bishma Sitoula, 34, a resident of Ward No. 5 in Gauradaha municipality, has been taken into custody for reportedly misbehaving with Mayor Chhatrapati Subedi at the latter’s residence.

            As per Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, the information officer at the District Police Office in Jhapa, Sitaula engaged in abusive and inappropriate behavior towards Mayor Subedi on Sunday night.

            The suspect, Sitaula, was brought before the District Administration Office in Jhapa today, where authorities decided to prolong the investigation for an additional 10 days under the charge of indecent conduct as per the Criminal Code 2074, Khadka stated.

23-       EC deactivating Election Code of Conduct from midnight today

            Kathmandu, March 9: The Election Code of Conduct, 2082 BS which was brought in force since January 18 for the elections to the National Assembly (NA) members and House of Representatives (HoR) members would be deactivated from midnight today, the Election Commission (EC) said.

            EC Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that the EC took such a decision today.

            The Election Code of Conduct was brought into implementation as per the Election Commission Act, 2073 BS and Election Code of Conduct, 2082 BS aimed at conduct the elections in a free, fair and fearless manner.

            Issuing a statement today, the EC said that the election code of conduct would remain deactivated from midnight today.

24-       MoHP urges precaution against increasing air pollution

            Kathmandu, March 9: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has urged the public to exercise precautions to protect themselves from increasing air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley as well as other major cities across the country.

            The Ministry made the appeal in light of the rising air pollution level in the Kathmandu Valley and other places.

            Ministry’s Spokesperson Dr Prakash Budhathoki warned that the air pollution could lead to various health problems affecting the heart, blood vessels, lungs, asthma patients, eyes, kidneys and other organs and could increase risk of cancer. He thus called upon everyone to remain cautious and take preventive measures.

            Spokesperson Budhathoki said that the air pollution could severely affect people with chronic illness and pregnant women. Therefore, he requested these vulnerable groups to avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary.

            Considering the fact that children, senior citizens and people suffering from respiratory related complications such as asthma and chronic coughs are particularly vulnerable to air pollution, he suggested them to exercise special precautions.

            Spokesperson Budhathoki noted that the rise in air pollution is mainly due to emissions from old vehicles, forest fires, industrial activities and smoke and dust generated from construction materials.

            Furthermore, the Department of Environment mentioned that the pollution levels have been rising in different parts of the country in the recent days due to unfavorable weather condition.

            The Department also noted that the concentration of fine particles has notably increased in major cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara and indicated that the air pollution is likely to persist in Kathmandu Valley for about another week.

            The Ministry advised people to avoid going outdoor during mornings and evenings and compulsorily wear masks if they must go out.

25-       Shram Sanskriti Party bags highest votes under PR system in Khotang

            Khotang, March 9: The Shram Sankriti Party led by Harka Sampang has emerged the largest political party in Khotang district by getting the highest votes under the proportional representation system. The party got 18,137 votes under the PR system out of a total 63,257 votes cast.

            Under the first past-the-post electoral system, Aren Rai was elected the HoR Member from the district by getting 16,612 votes.

            The CPN (UML) and Nepali Congress (NC) secured the second and third popular votes under the PR system in Khotang district.

            UML secured 11,385 votes and NC garnered 10,705 votes while Rastriya Prajatantra Party sccured 8,879 votes and Nepali Communist Party bagged 7,274 votes in Khotang district.

26-       HoR Election: 8,197 votes invalid in Kathmandu

            Kathmandu, March 9: In the House of Representatives election held on March 5, Kathmandu, the district with the highest literacy rate, recorded 8,197 invalid votes.

            Thakur Prasad Bhattarai, the District Election Officer in Kathmandu, reported that 1,226 votes were annulled in Kathmandu Constituency No. 10, which has 83,301 registered voters. Out of the 60,441 votes cast in this constituency, 59,215 were deemed valid.

            In Constituency No. 9, a total of 933 votes were invalid, with 52,740 votes cast from a total of 78,495 voters, resulting in 51,807 valid votes.

            In Constituency No. 8, 623 votes were invalid, with a total of 57,811 voters. From 54,794 votes cast, only 37,171 were valid. Constituency No. 7 saw 805 votes rejected, with 44,857 votes cast from a total of 68,685 voters, leading to 44,052 valid votes.

            In Constituency No. 6, 811 votes were invalid, with 45,248 votes cast from a total of 67,759 voters, resulting in 44,437 valid votes, as per the District Election Office in Kathmandu.

            Constituency No. 5 had 902 rejected votes, with 51,969 votes cast from a total of 78,114 voters, yielding 51,067 valid votes.

            In Constituency No. 4, 862 votes were invalid, with 50,963 votes cast from a total of 76,251 voters, resulting in 50,101 valid votes. Constituency No. 3 had 940 rejected votes, with 44,190 votes cast from a total of 64,479 voters, leading to 43,250 valid votes.

            In Constituency No. 2, 1,095 votes were invalid, with 59,441 votes cast from a total of 88,708 voters, resulting in 58,346 valid votes. Finally, in Constituency No. 1, 434 votes were invalid, with 32,314 votes cast from a total of 55,292 voters, yielding 31,880 valid votes.

            The commission has declared that it will release information on Tuesday, following the tallying of all votes, concerning the overall count of invalid votes nationwide. According to the most recent data, it is projected that three to four percent of the votes were invalid, commission’s deputy spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC told Rastriya Samachar Samiti. 

            He also mentioned that by this evening, a total of 9,523,000 votes under the proportional system have been counted.

27-       People displaced by National Park end agitation after 210 days

            Kanchanpur, March 9: The people displaced by Shuklaphanta National Park have ended their 210-day-long agitation on Monday. 

            The displaced families ended their agitation in the presence of the newly-elected House of Representatives (HoR) Member Dipakraj Bohora. The displaced families agreed to break their protest after Bohora pledged to take initiatives to resolve their issues for a permanent settlement.

            The people displaced while expanding the areas of then Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve are protesting for long demanding resettlement.

            In the recent weeks, they had been staging a sit-in by setting up a tent at Banhara area of Krishnapur Municipality-2 in the district.

            The newly-elected MP Bohora vowed to prioritize this issue stating that the sufferings of the displaced families were serious. 

            He argued that a concrete move will be taken for resettlement plan by studying the reports prepared by different commissions in the past.  “I will explore the ways to resolution by holding further discussions and interactions with you,” he added. 

            Chair of the wildlife displaced struggle committee Prem Dutta Bhatta shared that they decided to end the agitation by expressing their confidence on HoR Member Bohora.

28-       Police’s role in ensuring peaceful elections praiseworthy: IGP Karki

            Kathmandu, March 9: Inspector General of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki praised the entire police force for their commendable efforts in conducting the House of Representatives election in a peaceful, fear-free, and impartial manner.

            During an event at the Nepal Police Club in Bhirkutimandap today, IGP Karki expressed his appreciation for the professionalism displayed by the police staff in executing their duties despite challenging circumstances.

            Inspector General Karki emphasized that police profession is not a mere profession; it is a service that demands dedication, integrity, high standards of professionalism, a sense of duty, and strict discipline.

            Similarly, Armed Police Inspector General Raju Aryal also acknowledged the contribution of Armed Police personnel and their subordinate units for their outstanding performance in ensuring election security.

29-       Indian PM congratulates RSP Chair Lamichhane and senior leader Shah

            Kathmandu, March 9: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Chairperson of Rastriya Swatantra Party Rabi Lamichhane and its Senior Leader Balendra Shah for their party’s landslide victory in the recently concluded election to the House of Representatives.

            Sharing about the same through his official X handle this evening, the Indian Prime Minister has shared that he had warm telephone conversations with Chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Rabi Lamichhane and Senior Leader Balendra Shah.

            Stating that he congratulated both leaders on their electoral victories and RSP’s resounding success in the Nepal elections, Modi has said that he conveyed his best wishes for their forthcoming new Government and India’s commitment to work with them for mutual prosperity, progress and well-being of the two countries. “I am confident that with our joint endeavours, India and Nepal relations will scale new heights in the years ahead,” he has stated in X.
