Patan, April 15: Lalitpur Metropolitan City has brought 11 new electric waste-collection vans into operation as part of its initiative to move toward a fossil fuel-free city.
Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan officially handed over the vehicles during a special programme. The vans, manufactured by a private company, are specifically designed to navigate the narrow and historic streets of Lalitpur with ease.
Mayor Maharjan said the addition of electric vehicles is expected to significantly improve waste management services across the metropolis.
“We have adopted a policy that, whenever possible, we do not purchase vehicles that run on petrol or diesel,” he said. “This policy, approved by our municipal council, marks a new chapter in our effort to make Lalitpur a clean and green city.”
He added that the city will prioritize electric alternatives over fossil fuel-powered vehicles in future procurements.
According to the mayor, the initiative will not only contribute to environmental protection but also reduce operational costs.
A technical study conducted by the metropolis indicates that switching to electric vehicles could save approximately Rs. 7 million annually compared to diesel-powered alternatives.
