Nepal, Baitadi, April 23: In a move set to streamline civic participation, authorities in western Nepal have introduced an online system allowing eligible citizens to register for the electoral roll from the comfort of their homes, bringing an end to the long-standing requirement to visit district offices in person.
The District Election Office in Baitadi confirmed that individuals who have already obtained a national identity card can now complete voter registration through a digital platform.
The initiative is expected to ease access not only for residents within the district but also for those living elsewhere.
According to District Election Officer Khagendra Bharati, all eligible Nepali citizens who have submitted their national ID details can now enroll on the voter list quickly and efficiently via the online system. Officials believe the change will significantly reduce administrative burdens and improve inclusivity.
To ensure no one is left behind, alternative arrangements have also been put in place for those encountering difficulties with the digital process. Information Officer Naresh Dayal said applicants may submit a photograph of their national ID card or receipt slip, along with their personal mobile number and preferred polling station, via the office’s official WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger channels. Registration can then be completed remotely.
Additionally, the office has introduced a QR code system through which citizens can submit feedback, complaints, or suggestions relating to voter registration and updates.
Officials say the initiative forms part of a broader push towards technology-driven public services, aimed at delivering faster, simpler, and more accessible administration. It is hoped that the shift will eliminate the need for long queues and repeated office visits.
The District Election Office has urged all eligible citizens to take full advantage of the new system.
