Discussion on making digital communications decent

Kathmandu, May 1: With the growing influence of social media and algorithms dominating communication frontier, experts are underscored proper research in this sector.

At a seminar titled ‘Digital Transformation: Economy, Politics and Challenges in the Communications Sector’, organized by the Nepal Press Union in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), in the federal capital on Friday, the speakers stressed timely address to the challenges posed by social media and algorithms.

Former chairman of the Press Council Nepal, Harihar Birahi, said algorithms can be both beneficial and challenging, so focus should be made on exploring positive impact. Former president of the Nepal Press Union, Ramesh Tuphan, pointed out that the Nepali media sector needs thriving.

Kul Chandra Wagle, another former president of the Union, Nepali media should be able to navigate the confusion generated by social media and algorithms. Other speakers including journalism lecturer Dr Gagat Nepal spoke on how Nepali media could reap benefits of algorithm while minimizing its threats. —-
