Cleanliness campaign in government offices from Monday

            Kathmandu, May 10: The National Cleanliness Week is to be launched in government offices from Monday.

            The government has started a cleanliness week in all offices at the federal, provincial and local levels. For this, guidelines for the operation of the cleanliness week have been issued, said Subarna Bajracharya, a branch officer of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

            The cleanliness week has been initiated to maintain a clean, healthy and organized environment in all government bodies and educational institutions and to develop hygiene-related practices.

            The cleanliness week will be launched at Bir Hospital at 8:30 am on Monday in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population, shared Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari, Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry. He said that the cleanliness week will also be launched in all hospitals across the country at the same time.

            Indicators specified in the guidelines for office cleanliness measurement, toilet and hygiene measurement, cleanliness of educational institutions and public places, canteen and kitchen cleanliness, waste management measurement, service recipient experience measurement, and institutional sustainability measurement are to be enforced.

03-       HoR Human Rights Committee observes holding centers

            Kathmandu, May 10: The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has begun observing the holding centers, where landless squatters from unorganized settlements are being housed.

            The relocation of squatter settlements along the banks of rivers and tributaries in Kathmandu valley to safer places is underway since April 25. Those who have been relocated have been placed in various holding centers and residential buildings.

            The committee members visited the holding centers at the Nepal Electricity Authority Training Center and the Agricultural Development Bank Training Center in Bhaktapur on Saturday and will gradually visit other areas as well, shared Committee Chair Samiksha Baskota.

            She said that the committee shall hold discussion on the state of affairs of the holding centers, the service management and the areas of improvements in the coming days and present necessary suggestions and feedback to the concerned bodies.

            In the previous meeting of the Committee, members expressed their views on treating the poor, disadvantaged and squatter communities with respect by adhering to the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the basic values ​​of humanity, the principles of social justice and the basic standards of international human rights.

            Meanwhile, the Committee will also study and facilitate the work of collecting integrated digital data of the landless being done by the government.

04-       Siddhicharan Highway completely blocked due to floods

            Kathmandu, May 10: Floods triggered by rainfall has blocked the Siddhicharan Highway in Daldale, Udayapur Katari Municipality-14.

            The Highway in Daldale has been completely blocked for traffic since Saturday, shared Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abinarayan Kafle.

            Meanwhile, in view of possible floods on the Khurkot-Nepalthok-Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway in Kavrepalanchok traffic has been stopped from 5 pm to 5 am until further notice.

05-       RSP Secretariat meeting taking place this evening

            Kathmandu, May 10: A Secretariat meeting of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is scheduled to take place at 6:00 pm today.

            The meeting, convened as per the directive of party President Rabi Lamichhane has, will be held at Banasthali-based Ghantighar, the party’s central office, according to party Spokesperson Manish Jha.

            The meeting agenda includes discussions on schedules for the party convention, nominations of office-bearers to various commissions and departments, dissolution of district committees, disciplinary actions and the central committee meeting, it is said.

06-       Kathmandu Valley records 1,854 incidence of traffic violations

            Kathmandu, May 10: The Kathmandu Valley in the past 24 hours recorded 1,854 cases of traffic violations. As a result, revenue of Rs 0.48 million has been collected as fines from the violators of traffic rules.

            According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police, such cases recorded till this morning include 125 of drunk-driving, 166 of ride-sharing against the rule, 179 of the violation of traffic signals and 171 of over-speed driving.

            Likewise, 27 incidences of breaching the lane disciplines, 104 cases are related to honking in prohibited areas, 66 of parking on roadsides and pavements, 112 violations are related to driving on one-way route and 1,904 of other traffic-related violations.

07-       Nepali workers provided awareness on safe employment in UAE

            Kathmandu, May 10: In view of risks facing Nepali workers for lack of awareness on local rules and laws, the Nepali Embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recently organized an interaction on labor awareness and safe employment in Abu Dhabi.

            Nepali workers from various companies in the UAE took part in the awareness programme organized at the Embassy. A labour attache at the Embassy, Pankaj Lamichhane, gave a presentation on how the workers could exercise their rights and empower themselves for safety.

            His presentation features the rules to be abided by while working in the company, precautions needed during works, renewal of labour permit, utilization of the scheme of Social Security Fund and other entitlements awarded by the Nepal government. Lamichhane also reminded the migrant workers to keep their personal documents like passport, Emirates ID and worker’s identity card safe and remain vigilant against cybercrimes and financial frauds in the wake of rising digital communications and transaction.

            Even the information on search, rescue, management, compensation and labour assistance provided abroad was shared on the occasion. Such facilities were ensured through online system run by the Department of Consular Services, Nepal.

            Third Secretary at the Embassy, ​​Bimalesh Kumar Mishra, shared information on passport and consular services. The workers voiced need for continuing such awareness programmes in the days ahead. They also spoke on government’s initiative to ensure minimum wages in foreign employment.

            Practical information on ‘First Aid’ was also provided to the migrant workers there.

            The awareness event was attended by Nepali Ambassador to the UAE, Tej Bahadur Chhetri, and diplomatic employees at the Embassy.

08-       17 including driver injured in bus accident

            Dhanusha, May 10: Seventeen persons including bus driver were injured in an accident occurred at Mithila Municipality-9 of Dhanusha along the East-West Highway this morning.

            The bus (Bagmati Province 01-006 Kha 5237) heading to Biratnagar from Kathmandu lost control and somersaulted on the road as it tried to overtake another bus, according to police.

            The Area Police Office, Dhalkebar informed that 17 persons including bus driver received injuries in the incident. There were 33 passengers onboard. All of them have been receiving treatment at Model Hospital, Lalgadh.

09-       Donation box stolen from Nageshwor Mahadev Temple

            Kathmandu, May 10:  The Nageshwor Mahadev Temple, based in Gothatar of Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-9, reported a theft on Saturday night. According to the temple conservation and management committee, a (donation) box used for the collection of monetary offerings was stolen from the temple premises.   

            The temple’s priest noticed the missing of the collection box this morning. The box had reportedly not been opened since the Mahashivaratri festival which was observed on February 15.

            It is estimated that the donations collected in the box amounted to between Rs 800 thousands to one million. A police beat previously set up for the temple’s security was removed in the aftermath of Gen Z movement held on September 8-9, 2025. 

            Earlier, the temple of Lord Shiva, originally located at Gaucharan of the Pashupati area, was relocated to Gothatar during the expansion of the Tribhuvan International Airport.

10-       Everest climber dies of high-altitude sickness during expedition

            Solukhumbu, May 10: A mountain climber died of high-altitude sickness during an expedition to Sagarmatha (Mt Everest).

            The District Police Office, Solukhumbu confirmed the death of Bijay Ghimire Bishwakarma of Solududhkunda Municipality-7.

            According to office’s information officer, police inspector Bikash Rai, Ghimire suddenly fell ill at around 4:00 am today when he was at camp-1 of Sagarmatha.  He breathed his last while being brought down the base camp. Later, his body was transported to the Lukla helipad, and until the filing of this report, preparations were underway to send the body to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Kathmandu.

            Ghimire had already scaled the world’s highest peak and had lately been working as an expedition guide.

11-       RSP holding policy debate on disaster risk reduction

            Kathmandu, May 10: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is holding a national policy debate on ‘disaster management and risk reduction’ today.

            General Secretary Bhup Dev Shah informed that various issues surrounding disaster risk reduction and management would be dwelt on during the programme. The event is organized by the Party-Parliament-Government Coordination Committee of the RSP.

            Area expert Dr Gaurav Sagar Dawadi is scheduled to provide orientation as keynote speaker during the policy brainstorming that kicks off at 3:00 pm.

            The event features exchange of experiences of locals including people’s representatives like Chairman of Helambu Rural Municipality, Nima Gyaljen Sherpa; security officials, and Director General at Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Dr Archana Shrestha.
