Foreign Minister Khanal calls on Australia’s Governor General Mostyn

Kathmandu, Oct 10: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal called on Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn at the Government House in Canberra.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting discussed matters such as the six-decade-long friendly relationship between Nepal and Australia, contribution of Nepali Diaspora in Australia, and the interests of Nepali students.

They also discussed Nepal’s climate agenda with Australia, including Himalayan conservation, climate resilience, and setting up early warning systems, in the context of Nepal chairing negotiations at the upcoming Climate Conference (COP-31).

02-       Thapa elected NC President

Kathmandu, Oct 10: Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected the President of the Nepali Congress.

He emerged winner to the to position of the party with 6,584 votes.

According to the Election Committee Coordinator Prem Bahadur Khadka, Thapa’s contender Shyam Krishna Khadgi secured 375 votes.

A total of 7,013 general convention delegates had voted in the election.

03-       Cloudy weather with moderate rain today

Kathmandu, Oct 10: The country is currently under the influence of both the Western low-pressure system and the monsoon winds.

In the hilly and mountainous areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, it is generally cloudy, while the rest of the areas are partly cloudy.

There is light rain with thunderstorms and lightning in some places of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, and in a few places of Koshi, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces.

Similarly, this afternoon, it will be generally cloudy in all areas of Koshi Province and in the hilly and mountainous regions of the country, while in the Terai it will be partly cloudy.

There is a possibility of moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in some of the hilly and mountainous parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in a few places of the hilly and mountainous areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces.

There is also a possibility of moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in one or two places in the southern plains of Koshi Province.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy in the hilly and mountainous regions of the country, while the weather in the Terai will be mostly clear.

In some parts of the Terai, there is a chance of foggy weather in the morning.

In one or two places of the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, there is a chance of light rain or snowfall.

04-       BP Highway obstructed

Banepa (Kavre), Oct 10: The BP Highway has been completely blocked after a landslide with debris occurred in Roshi Rural Municipality-9, Pinthalibesi.

Information officer at the District Police Office, Robin Bista, shared that efforts are underway to clear the landslide and resume vehicular operation on the highway.

Incessant rainfall has troubled the bid to remove the debris. He also requested the people to check the road conditions before travel and use alternative routes, as there could be blockages at other parts of the highway as well.

05-       No increase in internet tariff, action to be taken if charged high-NTA

Kathmandu, Oct 10: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has clarified no increment in internet service charges, warning it will take action against the service providers charging high tariff than the approved rate and operating services in an unauthorized way.

Drawing attention to news reports published in the media of late about an increase in internet service charges, the NTA has recently clarified it has not received any proposal from internet service providers to hike prices.

The telecom regulatory authority pointed out that telecommunication service provider imposed charges for services should be fair and reasonable.

It reminded that tariff must be determined with the effective date noted and submitted for approval at least three months in advance as per the NTA directives.

The Authority also sensitized consumers about the legal provisions requiring publicly of the approved rate, prohibition of charging more than the approved rate, increasing fees without prior approval, and operating services in an unauthorized way.

The NTA has warned action against the service providers as per the Telecommunications Act and Regulations for breaching rules.

06-       Traffic disrupted on various highways

Kathmandu, Oct 10: Incessant rainfall has blocked roads in various parts of the country.

According to the Police Headquarters, traffic has been disrupted on the Prithvi Highway in Gajuri Rural Municipality-5, Galaudi Dhading, after raod erosion by Trishuli on the section. 

Similarly, traffic has been completely blocked on the Kaligandaki Corridor in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-2, Rakse, Gulmi.

Likewise, a landslide has also blocked the road in Bagmati Rural Municipality-3, Takurchhe, Lalitpur.

07-       NC 15th general convention: GaganThapare-elected Party President

Kathmandu, Oct 10: Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected to the position of President of the Nepali Congress, obtaining 6,584 votes during the 15th general congress of the party. His opponent Shyam Krishna Khadgi garnered merely 375 votes.

The electoral process, conducted as part of the 15th Congress, resulted in a total of 7,013 votes being cast, with 54 votes declared invalid.

Thapa’s political trajectory commenced during his secondary education, when he participated in the 2046 mass movement while enrolled in class 9. Throughout the preceding four decades, he has advanced progressively through organizational ranks, commencing as a member of Bal Congress and subsequently occupying multiple positions within the Nepal Student Union, including secretary and president at Trichandra Multiple Campus, Free Students Union.

Thapa’s prominence in student politics expanded as he attained membership in the Senate of Tribhuvan University and assumed significant leadership responsibilities within the Union. His activist endeavors reached their zenith in 2061 when he orchestrated demonstrations against the king’s direct rule, which resulted in treason allegations against him.

His steadfast commitment to democratic values garnered recognition from Amnesty International, which designated him a ‘prisoner of conscience.’ Thapa’s appointment as president constitutes a noteworthy achievement in his enduring commitment to political activism and organizational leadership within the Nepali Congress.

Thapa established himself as an influential participant in Nepali politics through his substantial engagement in the people’s movement of 2062/63, championing republican governance and democratic principles.

His political career progressed substantially upon his appointment to the Constituent Assembly in 2064, where he concentrated on pivotal matters including constitutional development, fundamental rights, child welfare, citizenship regulations, and energy security.

Following his election from Kathmandu Constituency-4 in 2070, he contributed significantly to the constitutional development process and subsequently presided over the Agriculture and Water Resources Committee in 2071, offering substantive contributions to policy deliberations concerning agriculture, energy, and water resources. In 2073, Thapa served in the capacity of healthminister.

Thapa, who was elected General Secretary at the 14th Congress convention held in 2078, had been actively engaged in advancing policy discourse and organizational reform initiatives within the party. Following the ‘Jen-Z’ movement in September 2025, Thapa, in collaboration with fellow General SecretaryBishwa Prakash Sharma, convened a special convention to advocate for enhanced youth participation within the party.

Subsequently, Thapa was unanimously elected as party President.  President Thapa, having assumed party leadership from the special convention, was re-elected to the chairmanship position following the 15th party convention held nine months thereafter.

In addition to his political endeavors, he maintained involvement in academic instruction, communication initiatives, and social advocacy campaigns. Thapa has consistently prioritized youth opportunity advancement, public education investment, equitable health service accessibility, and institutional governance as the central pillars of his political agenda. His progression from student-level political engagement to national leadership has been regarded as indicative of the future trajectory of Nepali Congress, encompassing organizational restructuring and generational political participation.

08-       Bhotekoshi flood: official death toll put at 1,457

Kathmandu, Oct 10: A total of 1,457 people have lost their lives in the devastating floods that struck the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system on August 26.

 According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, the data is as of 6:00 am today.

Two people who were critically injured in the disaster have lately died while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu.

Of the total deaths, 236 were reported in Rasuwa, 205 in Nuwakot, 73 in Dhading, 369 in Chitwan, 80 in Gorkha, 38 in Tanahu, 232 in Nawalparasi and 222 in Nawalparasi East.

Likewise, a total of 1,335 bodies have been managed following the collection of samples for the DNA tests, while 1,438 bodies remain unidentified.

The number of people missing in the river remains 4,720.

Likewise, 1231 people displaced by the floods have been accommodated in government -run holding centres in various districts.
