Kathmandu Metropolitan City preserving intangible heritages

Kathmandu, June 13: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is organizing ‘Dharmapath Mahotsav’ today for promoting intangible heritages of the city.

The event is scheduled to be held at Dharmapath of Ward No. 23 in the city.

The Chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-23, Macharaja Maharjan, said that the event is aimed at promoting different intangible heritages including the local rites, musical instruments, dances and other heritages.

“The ward has run cultural training programmes for the preservation of such intangible heritages along with the practices of Guthi. The skills of singing, dancing and playing musical instruments have been imparted. Such skills will be performed in the festival,” Maharjan shared.    

Furthermore, the festival is aimed at promoting locally-produced goods and their marketing.

The festival includes cultural programmes, health camp, stalls of local cuisines, handicraft showcase and others.

Heavy rain predicted in some provinces

Kathmandu, June 13: Some parts of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and the some areas in the eastern part of Lumbini province have experienced the impacts of monsoon winds at present, according to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Also there is an influence of the westerly winds in the western parts of the country.

According to the Division, there will be partially to generally cloudy weather across the country today.

There is a chance of light to moderate rainfall along with thunder and lightning in some areas in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. 

Likewise, heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Similarly, some areas of Koshi, Madhes, Gandaki and Sudurpaschim provinces will receive light to moderate rain along with thunder and lightning tonight.

Heavy rainfall is predicted to take place in one or two places of Koshi province, according to the Division.

Seven people including Durga Prasain sent to judicial custody

Kathmandu, June 13: The District Court, Kathmandu, on Thursday ordered to send Durga Prasain and six others into judicial custody on charge of inciting criminal activities in the Capital City.

A single bench of District Judge Dhruba Raj Karki made such order in connection to Prasain and six others for their roles in the violent activities taken place at Tinkule, Kathmandu, on March 28.

Likewise, the court has ordered to release 32 others on bail in the same case.

‘British Government positive to meet demands of Ex-Gurkha’ 

London, June 13: The Nepali and British sides held talks on Thursday in London, the UK, regarding the issues concerning Ex-Gurkha servicemen including their demand for equal pension. The two sides sat for a meeting over the issue almost a year after.

The Deputy Chief of Mission of Embassy of Nepal in London, Bipin Duwadi, said the British side has responded positively to the demands of Ex-Gurkha servicemen.

The meeting concluded on Thursday by agreeing to meet again after sufficient homework about the demands.

Deputy Chief of Mission Duwadi, the defence officials of the British Government and representatives of Ex-Gurkha servicemen were present at the meeting.

“The British side is positive. A consensus has been made to sit for a next meeting after determining the total number of pensioners and the required amount for them,” Duwadi told the RSS.

Likewise, President of the Gurkha Army Ex-Serviceman’s Organization Krishna Kumar Rai mentioned that discussions were held regarding equal pensions for both British and Ex-Gurkha pensioners.

PM urges for evidence-based investigation, prosecution in legal procedures

Kathmandu, June 13: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asked the concerned authorities to assist in making investigation and prosecution evidence-based and effective through the use of technology in legal procedures.

Inaugurating the Third National Conference of Police Investigators and Government Prosecutors in Kathmandu today, the PM urged the investigators and prosecutors to carry out their jobs for legal procedures in a fair manner being based on evidences and facts.

The PM said that drafting of contextual laws and their effective implementation were needed to build a just society by doing different researches, studies and investigations for social harmony and avoid injustice. “For this, there is a need for sufficient resources, well-trained, efficient and honest human resources. The government is committed to ensuring such resources and opportunities,” the PM added.

Likewise, PM Oli said police should have fairness, impartiality and transparency and also pledged to ensure logistic support for the Nepal Police.   

Saying that the criminals could use different minds and technology to cover their crimes, the PM asked the police to be resourceful with new technology to immediately control such criminals.

The PM viewed that the flawless investigation of police leads to justice delivery.  

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Attorney General Ramesh Badal and other high-level officials are also present at the event.

The conference is scheduled to conclude on Saturday.

Dr Kadariya elected ANNFSU Chairperson

Kathmandu, June 13: Dr Sujan Kadariya was elected the Chairperson of All Nepal National Free Student’s Union (ANNFSU) by defeating his nearest rival Prakash Paudel with the margin of seven votes. In the vote count concluded last night, Dr Kadariya won the election by securing 732 votes in the ongoing National Conference.

The ANNFSU is the student wing of the CPN (UML). Anjana Siwakoti and Bikash Shrestha made to the post of vice-chair while Dipak Dhami was elected to the post of general–secretary. 

Gold price climbs by Rs 4,200 per tola, trading at Rs 197,100

the price of gold has increased continuously in the international market from Tuesday.

The price of yellow metal has climbed by Rs 4,200 per tola (11.66 grammes) today in the domestic market as compared to Thursday. The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association has fixed the price of gold at Rs 197,100 per tola today.

Similarly, the price of silver has also increased by Rs 15 per tola. It is being traded at Rs 2,165. 

The price of gold is 3,427 US dollar per ounce in the international market today.

Democracy and the press complement each other: Foreign Minister Rana

Kathmandu, June 13: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has said democracy and the press are complementary to each other and that the media should also be responsible for the personal freedoms of any individual.

Objecting to a news article in the Nagarik vernacular daily that reported a telephone conversation she had with Shobha Gyawali, the director of Nepal Republic Media, as a threat, she stated that she believes media is inherently victim-friendly.

She stated that it is regrettable that some opinions expressed based on this are understood by the press as threatening language.

“I am surprised to see news published about me in the ‘Nagarik Daily’. I have spoken with her (Gyawali) regarding the factually incorrect and misleading video that has come on social media with malicious intent to defame our family, and its judicial interpretation,” she said.

Minister Dr Rana has also recalled that no one can forget the contribution of the Nepali Congress, which has fought the most for democracy, civil rights, and press freedom in Nepal.

Former President Bhandari expresses grief over Air India plane crash

Kathmandu, June 13: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has expressed sorrow over the plane crash occurred in Gujarat, India on Thursday.

Taking to a social networking site today, former President Bhandari said she was saddened by the news about death of 241 people out of 242 on board the Air India plane AI-171, which was flying to London from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport of Ahmedabad, India, in the crash. 

“I am deeply saddened by the news about the death of then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, who extended warm hospitality to me when I visited Gujarat in course of an official visit to India during my tenure as President,” she writes.

Former President Bhandari paid tribute to former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Rupani, students of BJ Medical College hostel, locals and passengers and crew members who lost their lives in the plane crash.

Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family members, she wished a speedy recovery to the injured ones.

State should make necessary policies for mother language preservation: Speaker

Patan (Lalitpur), June 13: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has stressed that the state should make necessary policies for the preservation of mother languages.

Inaugurating the second International Mother Language Conference organized by National Forum of Newar Journalists in Lalitpur today, Speaker Ghimire expressed the view that challenges have been seen in the context of mother language journalism and attention should be paid to preserve it. 

“The important document to be prepared from the international conference would be useful to make the nation strong by preserving mother languages. Activities are underway to preserve the political achievements gained in recent period. Rastriya Samachar Samiti, Gorkhapatra and Public Service Broadcasting have been working to preserve 62 languages existing in the country, which is a good work”, he mentioned.

The Speaker opined that the main objective of the international conference is to share information about present status of mother language journalism and its developing trend in Nepal as well as creating opportunity to know the progress made in international level.

The conference would contribute in the path of making mother language journalism more professional, inclusive and accessible in Nepal, he shared.

Remembering the 101th anniversary of commencement of mother language journalism by the first mother language journalist of Nepal, Dharmaditya Dharmacharya (Jagatman Baidya), Speaker Ghimire argued that Dharmacharya had constructed the foundation of mother language journalism.

Similarly, Chairperson of Public Service Broadcasting, Dr Mahendra Bista opined that there has been contribution in promotion of mother language journalism for long and added that it would play effective role in information and news dissemination.

Likewise, Conference Coordinator and senior Vice-Chair of the National Forum of Newar Journalists, Sunil Maharjan, said mother language journalism had remarkable contribution in every political change of the country, expressing the view that it has played significant role on social and cultural awareness.

The organization of Newar journalists was established 13 years ago. The first international conference was held in 2081.

MPs for forming party’s opinion on lifting ban on women workers in the Gulf

Kathmandu, June 13: The lawmakers have said that a party stance needs to be established regarding the issue of lifting the ban on Nepali women workers going for employment in the Gulf countries.

In today’s meeting of the Industry and Commerce, and Labor and Consumer Interest Committee under the House of Representatives, committee members stated that the parties still needed to have sufficient internal discussions on this issue.

There was a discussion in the meeting about the possibility of sending Nepali domestic workers for foreign employment to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country that has a bilateral labour agreement.

In that meeting, Binod Kumar Bhattarai, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, urged the committee to approve the advancement of the pilot project regarding the recruitment of Nepali domestic workers in the UAE.

Secretary at the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Krishna Hari Pushkar, said that the ban has not been resolved and proposed to open a legal way for sending domestic workers to the Gulf countries.

He stated that even after the ban on sending female workers to Gulf countries, the issues of forced labor and trafficking risks have not been resolved.

The committee members Hemraj Rai, Ramesh Rijal, and Rama Koirala Paudel expressed the opinion that a party-based opinion should be developed on this matter.

They suggested that the committee can only issue directives to proceed ahead with the pilot project after sufficient discussions with the experts along with the party’s position.

Committee member Krishna Kumar Shrestha raised concerns about the costs involved in the recruitment and hiring of Nepali domestic workers.

The committee members discussed the pilot project regarding the recruitment of Nepali domestic workers in the UAE between the Ministry of Human Resources and Immigration of the United Arab Emirates and Nepal’s Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security.

The agreement states that the Nepali domestic workers will have to bear the costs of passport fees, qualification certificates, medical tests, recruitment fees, entry visas processing costs, health insurance, workers’ safety programme insurance and airfare in that project.

Members of the committee Rukmini Rana Baraili, Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Rekha Yadav, Suryaman Tamang, Surendra Raj Acharya, and Amrita Devi Agrahari highlighted the plight of Nepali women stranded in various Gulf countries and called attention of the government through the chairperson for their rescue.

The committee members emphasized that the government should pay attention to the family laws of the destination countries while sending domestic workers.

Nepal is always a sovereign nation and will remain so: PM Oli

Kavrepalanchowk, June 13: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that Nepal is always a sovereign country and will always remain so.

Addressing the 30th convocation ceremony of Kathmandu University at Dhulikhel of Kavrepalanchowk today, Prime Minister Oli argued that Nepal had never been colonized. It is always a sovereign country and our ancestors saved the country with bravery.

Also the Chancellor of the KU, he opined that now Nepal should add one more character on its identity that Nepal is also a country have skilled and capable human resources.

“Nepal should be introduced as a country of honest, hardworking and decent people”, he mentioned, adding we should establish Nepal as the country providing employment.

Stating that the facts of the history have shown that Nepal is a researcher since earlier, Prime Minister Oli opined, “Our students and skilled human resources should involve in research and innovation.”

He wished the graduated students to move ahead resolving new challenges by putting the knowledge into their practice as learning is a never ending process.

The Prime Minister mentioned, “Our doctors and nurses are doing excellent works in foreign countries. How it is possible if our country do not have quality education?”

On the occasion, he presented medals and certificates to best students of different faculties.

One thousand nine hundred and twenty-nine students under various faculties of KU were graduated on the occasion.

Have increased diplomatic engagement and results will be good: Foreign Minister

Kathmandu, June 13: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba has said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has increased its diplomatic engagements actively and expected this will yield good results for the country’s foreign relations.

While informing about the work of the ministry at today’s meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the Federal Parliament, she mentioned that after being appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, she has increased diplomatic activities with Nepal’s friendly countries and the global community.

Minister Dr Rana said, “Diplomacy is a process. Results are not achieved immediately the very day. We are trying to establish our issues by increasing Nepal’s participation and involvement in the global community, international platforms, and bilateral and multilateral meetings. I believe that good results will come out of this.”

In response to the questions of the parliamentarians, Foreign Minister Dr Rana stated that by organizing the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’, a multilateral dialogue, Nepal, which is facing problems due to climate change, has worked to establish its ‘agenda’ in the global community.

Stating that the action plan passed by the Sagarmatha Sambaad will be promoted in the global climate-related programmes to be held from COP 30 onwards, she said the participation of neighbouring countries like India and China, as well as many other countries and international organizations in the Sagarmatha Sambaad, along with their commitment to support and collaborate on Nepal’s issues, is also a diplomatic achievement for Nepal.

She shared that Nepal has no labour destination and activities have been forwarded with coordination of Home Ministry and Ministry of Labour and Employment regarding Nepalis reached foreign countries illegally.

Minister Rana added that different types of essential services including passport and consular are being to Nepali citizens in any country of the world.

She briefed that parliamentary committee that there is a situation where modality of cooperation might be changed due to political scenario developed in international level and Nepal needs to consider the diplomatic initiatives it will take forward.
