UML central committee to meet on Monday morning

Published Date : July 20, 2025

Kathmandu, July 20: The central committee meeting of the CPN (UML) is taking place next day. The meeting is scheduled at 11:00 am at party headquarters, Chyasal, Lalitpur.

The meeting is focusing on the issues including proposal for amendment to the party’s statute, reporting on the party’s organizational works and preparation for the statute convention, said Rajendra Gautam, Chief of the UML’s Publicity Department.

Leader Gautam informed that proposal for revising party’s statute, previously endorsed by the Secretariat and Politburo meetings will be presented and discussed in the upcoming meeting.

The amendment proposal has sought removal of the 70-year-old age limit for the Party Chairperson and previous provision for two terms in the executive position.

A three-tier structure including standing committee, politburo and central committee has been proposed in the amendment.

Currently, there is a provision for 357 members in the UML central committee.

The meeting is expected to be a significant gathering of party line at a time when it is facing a proposal of major change in party statute- age limit and consecutive term. Another factor drawing equal attention to the meeting is the entry of Bidya Bhandari, former President into the UML, which seems entertained by a section in the party while another even denying her membership renewal.

Education Committee dwells on Media Council Bill

Kathmandu, July 20: The meeting of the Committee on Education, Health and Information Technology under the House of Representatives witnessed diverse views on Media Council Bill. During the meeting held on Sunday, the lawmakers put forth their views on relevance, need and form of the Media Council.

Devendra Paudel said Media Council is essential to regulate those who spread fake news and assassinate character. Clear provision on curbing fake news is essential, he said, adding that independent and capable persons should be appointed through competition in the Council.

Although anarchy was unleashed in the name of full freedom of press and journalism, the press freedom must not be suppressed while curbing anarchy in media, according to Rekha Sharma.

Sumana Shrestha viewed only full autonomy of Council along with inclusive and proportional mechanism can deliver well.

Major basis of the Council should be citizen’s right to access information, Bidya Bhattarai said, underling the need of fair and transparent media, which is a perquisite to democracy. The Bill should pay heed to this aspect.

On the occasion, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, said the Bill was needed to make electronic, online and print media accountable, credible and dignified. “Currently, there is anarchy in media, which warrants regulation,” he said, adding that agreement was made for the provision of ‘Mass Communications Council’. It will be ensured autonomous as per suggestions.

Other lawmakers also underlined the need of free and accountable press and the establishment of Media Council as an autonomous body.

Earlier, the Bill was passed by the National Assembly and sent to the House of Representatives.

UML Chair Oli, former President Bhandari meet

Kathmandu, July 20: CPN UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former President Bidya Devi Bhandari held a meeting.

The two held one-to-one meeting at the UML’s central office, Lalitpur today. The meeting is held on the eve of the party’s central committee meeting.

Emerging from the meeting, former President Bhandari briefly interacted with the journalists during which she informed that they discussed contemporary issues of national politics. “I only held talks regarding national politics with him,” mentioned Bhandari. “You will learn about other issues through party’s official channel,” she added.

The Former President also divulged in the gathering of journalists that she already had her party’s membership renewed.

The meeting between the Chairman of the ruling party and former President lasted for nearly an hour and half. Bhandari, in her first visit to the UML’s central office since she stepped down from the role after serving as the country’s Head of the State, was welcomed by UML’s Vice-President Surendra Pandey and Secretary of the party’s central office, Dr Bhisma Adhikari.

It may be noted that Bhandari, the former Vice-Chairperson of UML, has already announced her return to politics. This issue figured significantly in the previously held UML’s secretariat and politburo meetings and subsequently made its way into the meeting with the party leadership today.

Bhandari’s return to active politics through her party has drawn a mixed reaction within the party as a section of the party is in favour of her return while a majority of the politburo members in the politburo meeting yesterday were against it, arguing that a person already holding a prestigious position such as the President should not consider returning to politics.

‘Meeting between Chair Oli and former President Bhandari positive’

Kathmandu, July 20: The CPN UML leaders have said the meeting held between UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former President Bidya Devi Bhandari was positive.

The two leaders held the meeting at UML headquarters, Lalitpur for one and half hour on Sunday.

At a time when the debate surfaced in the party and political milieu whether it was right for the former President Bhandari to return to party politics, the meeting between the top figures is expected to help fizzle out the debate.

Senior Vice Chairman Ishwor Pokhrel said Chairman Oli had informed the Saturday’s politburo meeting of the party about his meeting with former President. The meeting held on Sunday was positive, he said, adding that General Secretary of the party had already informed about renewal of Bhandari’s membership to the party.

At a time when the UML central committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, the meeting held between Oli and Bhandari is being observed keenly.

“It is not good to advocate for or against any leader or faction in the party. So, rather than outside debates, the harmonious discussion held between party Chairman and former President will help settle the issue,” said Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai.

It is said the central committee meeting is dwelling on the key agenda of amendment to party statute.
