Published Date : October 19, 2025

Mustang, Oct 19: The sale of mountain goats and sheep has begun in Mustang district for the Tihar festival.

According to the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Centre in Mustang, nearly 1,000 mountain goats (known as chyangra) and sheep were sold during this festival season.

Chief of Office Lalmani Acharya stated that nearly 16,000 mountain goats and sheep were sent to different districts via the Beni-Jomsom road section after collecting the Himalayan goats and sheep from Mustang, Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla and other Himalayan districts during the Dashain festival.

Aryal shared that the demand for the mountain goats and sheep is maximum during the festive season.

Pemba Tshiring Rokaya of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality-4 in Jomsom said that he has supplied nearly 80 mountain goats for sale during the Tihar festival and added that he has hoped a good income from the sale this time as he lost almost Rs 5,000 for each goat during the Dashain festival.

Rokaya, who is in this business for 12 years, has hoped for a good market and income too in this season as the supply in the market is limited.

The goats reared in the highlands are considered to be tasty, healthy and nutritious, as they graze in the pasture having medicinal herbs. Chyangra and sheep are consumed more during the festivals. The Himalayan goat reaches slaughter age when it is three years old. He also pointed out the chances of risks in this business adding that the cost of transportation from Mustang to Pokhara for each goat is almost Rs 1,500.  The cost of each mountain goat is around Rs 30,000 in the farm this year, according to Rokaya.

Gharapjhong, Loghekar Damodarkunda, Baragung Muktichhetra and Lomanthang are some places famous for rearing chyangra. It is a major source of income for the farmers here. —
