Kathmandu, Feb 11: The Election Commission (EC) is launching a nationwide voter education campaign in a bid to make successful the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
The voter education drive will run from February 15 to March 1 so that voting process would be made easier. It would also help reduce number of invalid votes.
Every ward will have a volunteer for voter education. There are 6,743 wards in 753 local levels across the country. The volunteers reach every household and make aware the people on the role of voting.
Sample ballot papers are used to educate the voters, according to Spokesperson at EC, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai. Even a contact person will be in place at each local level for monitoring the voter education.

02- Department coordinating for smooth supply of cooking gas
Kathmandu, Feb 11: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer’s Protection has said it would coordinate with the related agencies and take regulatory measures for the effective supply of cooking gas.
The Department is taking such move after the consumers faced problems relating to cooking gas for some days. Nepal Oil Corporation has been urged to make effective the supply of the daily essential.
The Department also directed the gas dealing companies to pay heed to ease the supply. It conducted a monitoring of the gas bottling industries in the Kathmandu Valley and directed for production and supply of the essential as per consumers’ need.
The regulatory body demanded the concerned dealers, retailers and supply companies of LP gas not to hoard the cooking gas but continue producing and supplying it in full capacity of industries.
Even the consumers are requested not to hoard the cooking gas.

03- Int’l Day of Women and Girls in Science today
Kathmandu, Feb 11: The International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) is being observed across the globe today.
The Day underscores the urgency of increasing participation of women and girls in science and technology to close the gender gap and spur inclusive development.
The United Nations had passed a resolution on December 22, 2015 to mark the IDWGS every year on February 11. The Day is being marked since 2016. The theme of the Day for this year is, ‘Synergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls’.
Giving a message on this occasion, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres underlined, “We must ensure that every girl can imagine a future in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and that every woman can thrive in her scientific career.”
According to UNESCO, women, however, comprise less than one third of the world’s researchers.

04- NC Vice President Sharma urges cadres to shun dispute
Khajura (Banke), Feb 11: Vice President of the Nepali Congress, Bishwoprakash Sharma, has directed the party cadres and followers to shun dispute and devote to respective villages and constituencies for better result in the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
“Forget conflict and difference, but get united for election,” he called on the party cadres while addressing an election mobilization and publicity committee of the party in Nepalgunj city on Tuesday. He argued that NC was transformed after the special general convention.
He informed nearly two-thirds of election candidates were new ones in party this time. “After Gen Z movement, NC is corrected,” Sharma said, asserting that NC does not divide but connects people and nation.
The Vice President further reminded that NC bears a significant history of cooperation, collaboration and unity. It fosters hope and trust among people, according to him.

05- PM Karki to present Film Bill at NA meeting today
Kathmandu, Feb 11: Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who is also handling the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, is scheduled to present a ‘Film Bill, 2081’ in the meeting of the National Assembly later today.
PM Karki is tabling the Bill in the upper house of the federal parliament at 1:15pm. Even a proposal for the passage of the Bill along with discussion will be presented on the occasion.
Moreover, the concerned ministers are responding to the queries relating to the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration and the Finance Ministry.
Chairperson of the Legislation Management Committee, Tulasa Kumari Dahal, is scheduled to present the annual financial report of the committee, 2081/82.
The parliament business will also witness a proposal, seeking a discussion on study report related to the delegated legislation committee.

06- NCP’s election manifesto: Plan to secure over 10 percent economic growth in five years
Kathmandu, Feb 11: The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) unveiled its election manifesto amidst a press conference at party office, Koteshwor on Tuesday.
NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ made public the manifesto, calling it a commitment paper for the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. The commitment paper has floated ambitious plans and announced commitment to addressing the plans and livelihood issues.
The party has aimed at securing achievements by enforcing strategic plan on various sectors like physical infrastructure, education, economy and health.
The commitment paper mentioned that the present consumerist economy would be shifted to production-based, self-reliant and inclusive model. The roadmap to develop independent and inclusive Nepal is emphasized along with economic reform of new stage and prosperity with social justice. Stating that structural crises plagued Nepal’s economy, the NCP blamed the import-based economy for rising inequality.
Lack of regulation in cooperatives and non-government sectors has fueled anomalies and misuse, the party said in the paper, arguing although the constitution had envisioned socialism oriented economy, the traditional policy hindered enforcement of fundamental rights.
Importantly, the party has aimed at reducing multi dimensional poverty to 10 percent while reaching economic growth rate to over 10 percent in coming five years.
Employment creation, mobilization of alternative finance, inclusive development, wise, sustainable and productive use of natural resources, increase in domestic and foreign investments, collective production system, efficient allocation of resources, strengthening of spending capacity are featured in the commitment paper. Every year, 150 thousand additional jobs would be created, thereby ensuring jobs to 500 thousand youths in a year. Entrepreneurship would be fostered among youths and investment secured for it, it read.
The public administration would be made result-oriented. The public service would be pro-people, neutral, transparent, tech-friendly, and corruption free.
The federal civil service act would be brought at the earliest in line with the spirit of constitution, the party added.
Forthcoming decade would be declared an agriculture investment decade to secure investment from government, private entities, cooperatives and aid agencies in agriculture sector. Self-reliance on meat, fish and vegetables and distribution of identity cards to farmers within a year are other schemes, according to the commitment paper.
In the coming five years, 10,000 MW additional hydropower would be produced and green energy utilized to meeting the long term plan.
The party has committed to utilizing the green climate fund to orient the activities towards achievement of the national goal of net zero ambition by 2045. Technology-assisted disaster management and early warning would be in place.
The health insurance scheme, which is limited to only 30 percent population, would be expanded to entire population, according to NCP.
An independent and balanced diplomacy would be adopted by reinforcing Nepal’s non-aligned foreign policy, and protecting national interest, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Border disputes with neighbouring countries would be settled vial diplomatic dialogues, the paper mentioned, adding that information technology would be leveraged for bolstering a self-reliant economy. Digital divides would be bridged through utilization of IT and innovation, according to the party.

07- Jeep driver dies, three receive injury in accident
Dang, Feb 11: A jeep en route to Tulsipur from Rukum Purba met an accident at Chorkhola of Kapurbot rural municipality-3, killing the driver on the spot.
Three others riding in the jeep (Ja 1 Jha 5661) also got injury in the accident occurred this morning.
A police post at Kapurkot informed that jeep driver, Bijay BK, 34, from Sisne rural municipality of Rukum Purba died on the spot, while three others injured in the incident have been taken to Rapti Provincial Hospital for treatment.
Two boys and a woman were injured in the accident, the police added. —
