Deferral of parliament session for adequate business: Govt Spokesperson

Nepal, Kathmandu, April 24: Minister for Communications and Information Technology and Government Spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel has made it clear that the government had to postpone the scheduled parliament session in order to allocate adequate business once it is held.

Minister Pokharel said it while making public the government decisions made on various dates. The Cabinet decisions made on various dates were made public through a press conference on Friday. Spokesperson Pokharel shared that a delegation led by the Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs was allowed to participate in the first meeting of the bilateral consultation mechanism between Nepal and Romania to be held in Bucharest, Romania on May 4-5.

Consul General Dr Bindeshwar Prasad Lekhak at Nepal’s Consulate General in Hong Kong has been recalled by the government to appear in the Ministry. Spokesperson Pokharel informed that the meeting decided to promote three Brigadier General of the Nepali Army to the post of Major General. Twenty-five gazetted first class officers (joint secretaries) have been transferred by the government. A work procedure has been approved on establishment and operation of revolving fund to return the saving by the people in troubled cooperatives.

Government Spokesperson Pokharel further informed that it was decided to implement the Government Public Guthi Land Misuse Report, 2076 (Mohanram Bhattarai). Permission was given by the meeting to submit the Bill to Amend Nepal Special Service Act, 2042; and th

e Bill to Amend the House of Representatives Election Act, 2073 to the federal parliament. Other legislations receiving permission for the submission were- Bill to Amend Voters’ List Act, 2083; and the Financial Procedures and Financial Responsibility (Third Amendment) Regulations. The government also approved Nepal Tourism, Hotel and Mountain Establishment Development Committee (Formation Order) to operate the Nepal Mountain Institute and the Nepal Tourism and Hotel Management Institute in an integrated manner. Similarly, Health Tourism Strategy (2026-2035) and Action Plan (2026-2030) have been approved.

House session postponed for adequate business

Responding to a media query, the Communications Minister and Government Spokesperson made it clear that the government had to postpone the parliament session though summoned earlier in order to allocate adequate business once its sits. Potential agendas for discussion, procedures, and the entire official proceedings would be discussed in-depth before smooth running of the parliament.

“The session was postponed to ensure adequate business for the parliament. The government will enact laws through bills,” he added. Stating that the government is not in favour of bringing an ordinance, he said that landless squatters were being shifted to safer locations as part of the government’s preparedness for disaster risk mitigation.

The squatters in the Kathmandu Valley are at risk of natural disasters every year, and it has been planned to relocate them to safer areas as the rainy season approaches. The relocation will be carried out in coordination with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office, he said. —
