Heat wave likely in Tarai belt

Kathmandu, June 5: The country is under the partial influence of the upper-level western low-pressure trough and local winds, which could cause cloudy weather and rain in different parts of the country today.

The Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology stated that generally cloudy conditions are likely over Koshi Province and the hilly and Himalayan regions of the rest of the country, while partly cloudy conditions are likely over the Tarai region this afternoon.

There is a possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places in Koshi, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim Provinces, as well as in the remaining hilly and Himalayan regions, and at one or two places in Madhesh Province and the Terai regions of Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces.

Moderate heat wave conditions are likely at a few places in the Tarai regions of Madhesh and Lumbini provinces, while hot day conditions are likely at some places in the Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Sudurpashchim provinces, the weather service stated.

The Department stated in its weather bulletin that there will be generally cloudy conditions over Koshi Province and the Himalayan region of the country, while partly cloudy conditions are likely over the remaining areas tonight. There is a possibility of light rainfall at a few places in Koshi Province and at one or two places in all other provinces.

04-       Rs 2 million collected in traffic action from Kathmandu Valley in 24 hrs

Kathmandu, June 5: The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office reported the prosecution of 2,300 motorists for traffic rules violations, resulting in a revenue collection of Rs 2.08 million in the past 24 hours.

Among those penalized, 104 individuals were apprehended for drunk drive and 177 others were engaged in illegal ride-sharing. Furthermore, 147 motorists were cited for violating traffic light regulations and 105 were booked for speeding.

Other infractions included 56 cases of lane discipline violations, 152 instances of honking in restricted areas, 113 vehicles parked in road zones, 141 drivers on one-way streets and 1,305 additional traffic rule violations.

This enforcement underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations in the area.

05-       Chinese assistance to establish library in Tamakoshi

Kathmandu, June 5: The Nepal-China cultural exchange event was organized at Gaurishankar Secondary School in Tamakoshi of Dolakha district near the Nepal–China border on Thursday.

The event was jointly organized by the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD), the China Cultural Center in Kathmandu and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), coinciding with International Children’s Day.

In this initiative, Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) supported the construction of a library and stationery.

Likewise, the China Cultural Center showcased Chinese culture and images of Chinese tourist cities, while the China Foundation for Rural Development distributed sports kits to the students.

This fully reflects the strong commitment and support of Chinese institutions in Nepal toward the holistic cultural and physical development of children in remote areas, China Foundation for Rural Development said.

The newly established library is equipped with a diverse collection of books in the Nepali language related to China and is decorated with images of Chinese culture provided by the China Cultural Center. “These resources help cultivate students’ understanding of Chinese culture, while the variety of equipment included in the sports kits enriches children’s physical activities at school.”

Counselor Zhu Feng of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, Director Liu Zhanping of China Cultural Center, Country Director of China Foundation for Rural Development Nepal Office Zou Zhiqiang and representatives from the local government attended the event.

This project reflects the broader vision of strengthening people-to-people connectivity while supporting the development of quality education.

On the occasion, Counselor Zhu termed this initiative as highly meaningful.

Likewise, PowerChina Country Representative Chen Xu stated that PowerChina will continue to serve as a bridge for China‑Nepal cooperation and contribute to building a shared future.

Director Liu from the China Cultural Center remarked that such gatherings sow the seeds of friendship and knowledge.

Country Director of the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) Zou said that her institution has been working in Nepal with sustained investment in children’s education and well-being.

06-       March 5 HoR election a case study for whole world, former PM Karki claims

Kathmandu, June 5: Former Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the House of Representatives (HoR) election happened on March 5 was a case study for the entire world.

During the central review workshop organized today by the Election Commission (EC), Karki said that new political parties and new generation have come to the House by winning the election and they should be given a chance to work by respecting the people’s verdict.

She said that the role of the government, Election Commission, security bodies and media persons was crucial in making the HoR election a success.

On the occasion, former Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Kumar Sinha said the HoR election on March 5 was conducted without any violence, thanks to cooperation among the government, Election Commission and stakeholders.

Similarly, then Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal viewed that stability should be maintained in the country by ensuring good governance and political culture as per the spirit of the Gen-Z Movement.

07-       Under-19 National Women’s Cricket Championship Qualifier commences in Surkhet

            Kankrebihar (Surkhet), June 5: The Under-19 National Women’s Cricket Championship Qualifier has started here from today.

            Inaugurating the tournament, Chief Minister of Karnali Province Government, Yamlal Kandel said that a state-of-the-art cricket stadium would be constructed in Birendranagar, the provincial capital.

            He stated that the growing interest among the youths towards cricket is encouraging for everyone.

            “The fields currently being used for matches are temporary ones, we will build proper cricket grounds in collaboration with the CAN and the provincial government. Despite limited resources and means, the provincial government is constructing sports infrastructure to make Karnali a hub for sports,” Chief Minister Kandel said.

            He alleged that although the Karnali Province government was ready to organise the 10th National Games, it was delayed due to the federal government’s indecision.

            “We are fully prepared for the 10th National Games. The 10th National Games could not be held on time due to the central government,” he added.

            He complained that the federal government had always neglected Karnali when it comes to the budget allocation.

            Roshan Singh, Vice President of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), said that the qualifier competition was organised in Karnali to develop women’s cricket in Karnali.

            The national under-19 team will be selected from the National Women’s Under–19 Qualifier being held in Karnali, and the same team will participate in the World Cup to be held in 2027.

            Winner to get 500 thousand prize

            Attractive prizes have been arranged for the teams and players who perform exceptionally in the competition.

            The winning team will receive cash prize of Rs 500,000 and the runner-up team will receive Rs 300,000.

            In the individual category, the best player (Player of the Series) will be awarded Rs 40,000, the best batter Rs 25,000, the best bowler Rs 25,000 and the ‘Player of the Match’ of each game will be given Rs 3,000 each.

08-       Over 6,700 employees failed to check in office on time: NVC

            Kathmandu, June 5: The National Vigilance Centre (NVC) has intensified surprise inspection at government offices.

            The Centre has been conducting surprise check at 10 offices per day, said Information Officer at the Centre, Sarita Khatiwada. The Centre has formed five groups for this purpose.

            The groups have been inspecting about employees’ attendance, office uniform, file tracking, among other activities. The Centre conducted surprise inspection at 1,130 offices from the beginning of current fiscal year.

            During this period, a total 6,710 employees were found not following the office duty hours while 1,162 employees were found not wearing proper office uniform, added Khatiwada.

            During the surprise check, some of the offices were monitored two or three times.  Information Officer Khatiwada mentioned that action has been recommended against such employees.

            As per the Civil Service Act, 2049 BS, the employees facing warning twice would face departmental action.

            The Centre has been conducting monitoring of government offices in seven provinces.

09-       Gold, silver prices decline

            Kathmandu, June 5: The price of gold and silver has reduced in the domestic market today.

            According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of silver has gone down by Rs 2,100 per tola (11.66 grammes) and reached Rs 309,000 per tola. It was Rs 311,100 per tola on Thursday. 

            Similarly, the Federation has fixed the price of silver at Rs 5,230 per tola against Rs 5,285 on Thursday.  It has declined by Rs 55 per tola.

            As per the international media, the price of the yellow metal is being traded at 4,443 US dollar per ounce and silver at 75 US dollar per ounce in the international market today.

10-       Himalaya Airlines starts direct flight service on Kathmandu–Shenzhen–Kathmandu route

            Kathmandu, June 5: The Himalaya Airlines, Nepal’s international airline, has started direct scheduled flight service between Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu, and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX), Shenzhen on June 4, 2026.

            With the inaugural flight, Himalaya Airlines has become the first and only commercial carrier in the history of civil aviation to operate a direct scheduled flight on the Kathmandu–Shenzhen–Kathmandu sector. The operation establishes a new and strategically significant air corridor between Nepal and one of China’s most dynamic economic and technological centres.

            Himalaya Airlines is operating Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 seat capacity on the route, the Himalaya Airlines stated in a press release today.

            Himalaya made the historic take off for Shenzhen with flight number (H9 985) at 09:59 PM (Nepali local time) with 98 passengers on board, which landed in Shenzhen at 04:17 AM (Chinese local time) on June 5.

            Similarly, the Shenzhen-Kathmandu flight (H9 986), took off from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport at 06:12AM (Chinese local time) with 157 passengers onboard on June 5, 2026, and landed in Tribhuvan International Airport at 08:26AM (Nepali local time) on the same day.

            Shenzhen, widely regarded as China’s Silicon Valley and officially recognised as the country’s first Special Economic Zone, is a global hub for technology, manufacturing, finance, and innovation. Known as the Future City, Shenzhen is home to leading technology corporations and a rapidly growing base of outbound travellers and business professionals. The establishment of a direct air connection between Kathmandu and Shenzhen represents a significant step forward in Nepal–China bilateral relations and people-to-people connectivity.

            Himalaya Airlines is initially operating two weekly frequencies on the Kathmandu–Shenzhen–Kathmandu sector. Outbound flights from Kathmandu are departing every Tuesday and Thursday, with return flights from Shenzhen operating every Wednesday and Friday, the Airlines said.

11-       World Environment Day 2026: Minister Chaudhary insists on climate change and nature-friendly development

            Kathmandu, June 5: Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment, Gita Chaudhary has said that the economic prosperity and environment protection should be taken ahead side by side amidst climate change induced challenges.

            In her address to the main function marking the World Environment Day, 2026 today, Minister Chaudhary said the slogan ‘Foundation for a Prosperous Future: Climate Change and Nature Friendly Development’ would guide the sustainable development journey of Nepal.

            Though Nepal has insignificant contribution to the climate change, its discernible impacts are explicitly visible from mountain to Tarai, she noted.

            Sharing that the government has been advancing the climate change mitigation and adaptation as integral part of the national development plan, the Minister claimed the development of green economy has been entered to the execution from policy level.

            She said that the government is focused on promoting green economy based on expansion of access to climate finance, forest, agriculture, energy and bio-diversity.

            Chaudhary emphasized on a development system based on preparedness to prevent disasters rather than post-disaster rescue, while underlining the need of the construction of climate-resilient infrastructure.

            Referring to Nepal’s unique international identity through community forest management, biodiversity conservation, and local community participation, Minister Chaudhary noted the value addition of medicinal herbs and non-timber forest products can lead to prosperity alongside conservation.

            Highlighting the importance of air pollution control for environmental protection, she pointed out that air quality monitoring centers established in 30 locations across the country are aiding evidence-based policy making.

            She also informed that the government has put in place a policy to upgrade air pollution monitoring centers in major cities and enhance the capacity of the Central Environmental Laboratory.

            Likewise, priority has been given to the formulation of the National Air Quality Management Action Plan and the Air Quality Management Action Plan for the Kathmandu Valley, Minister Chaudhary stated.

            She also stated that the Department of Environment will play a pivotal role in the implementation of Nepal’s third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), emission management, and strengthening of the environmental data system.

            Highlighting that climate change has severely affected the water resources system, she noted that climate events such as glacier melting, irregular rainfall, floods, landslides, and wildfires have affected life, livelihoods, and the economy.

            Pointing out that climate- and nature-friendly development cannot be achieved through the government’s lone efforts, Minister Chaudhary called on the private sector, educational institutions, research centers, civil society, media, and the general public to advance this campaign as a national movement.

            She stressed the need for shared commitment from everyone to achieve the goal of creating economic opportunities while conserving nature, meeting the needs of the present generation while safeguarding the rights of future generations, and building a green, progressive, and prosperous Nepal.

12-       March 5 HoR polls held successfully against all odds after Gen Z movement: Acting CEC Bhandari

            Kathmandu, June 5: Acting Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission, Ram Prasad Bhandari, has shared that it was not easy to peacefully hold the election to the House of Representatives on the slated time within six months of the Gen Z movement.

            At an inaugural session of the central review workshop on March 5 HoR election organized today by the Election Commission (EC), Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari clarified that the election was held at the participation of the government, EC, political parties, bodies concerned and general people amidst doubt and many challenges.

            “It was not easy to hold the election peacefully on the slated time within six months after the Gen Z movement. The international community is closely watching this election,” he mentioned. 

            The Acting Chief Commissioner opined, “This success was achieved not only from efforts of the EC alone.  We gave importance to political dialogue from the beginning with a belief that no one should be prohibited anyone from election. So we with the support of the government became successful to hold discussion keeping rebel side, old political parties and new political groups in one table.”

            Recalling that they worked round the clock to hold the election amidst challenges as there was no other option except election to maintain discipline that was disrupted by the protest, he argued that the election was relatively frugal and systematic.

            On the occasion, an electronic copy of election results book was released where the then Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, the then Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Anil Kumar Sinha, Election Commissioners-Dr Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Sagun Shumsher JB Rana, representatives of political parties representing in the Federal Parliament, high-ranking officers of the government, representatives of the security bodies, election observers, among others were present.
