Sugarcane farmers paid nearly Rs 2 billion for their crops

Mahottari, July 7: The sugarcane farmers in the district have been paid nearly Rs 2 billion, which was pending for long. They got the payment for their produces supplied to two sugar mills.

The District Administration Office, Mahottari informed that the sugarcane farmers were provided over Rs 1.76 billion for their crops supplied to two sugar mills- Everest Sugar and Chemical Industries at Gaushala Municipality-1 and Siddhibinayak Sugar and Chemical Industries at Gaushala-12.

The farmers had provided 2.8 million quintals of sugarcanes in the current fiscal year, 2082/83. The payment was calculated and cleared accordingly, according to chief administrative officer Kameshwor Yadav.

However, the grant to be provided by the government to the farmers is yet to be ensured. So, Office of the Comptroller in the district is written for it. The district payment committee wrote to the controller office, informing the due grants of Rs 207 million.

The payment committee was formed under the chairmanship of chief district officer. The clearance for the cash crops handed over to the mills will be over within this very fiscal year, according to the District Administration Office.

02-       Govt to provide relief to the poultry farmers within a week

Kathmandu, July 7: The Livestock Service Department has forwarded preparation to provide Rs 520 million to the poultry farmers who suffered loss in business due to bird flu spread in various 11 districts. The Department is ready to provide the relief amount within a week.

The relief amount would compensate at least 75 percent of the loss caused by the disease. In course of preventing the disease, the Department had destroyed chicken, eggs and feed.

Spokesperson at the Department, Mukul Upadhyay, informed that the concerned farmers would be provided the relief amount within a week. The payment would be made through banking system to the farmers whose business loss was verified after application for relief.

If any farmer misses the time to claim within this fiscal year, he would be ensured payment next year. The amount for compensation is determined based on Bird Flu Control Regulation that evaluates loss conducting verification process.

Spokesperson Upadhyay further requested the poultry owners to apply in the concerned District Livestock Service Office along with the evidence of destroying chicken, egg and feed.

The districts most affected by the bird flu infection are Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchwok, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari,Bara, Chitwan and Nawalparasi. So far, the government destroyed nearly 700 thousand chicken, 1.1 million eggs and 330 tons of feed in a bid to curb the spread of bird flu. It is said the farmers lost the property nearly Rs 700 million.

03-       Paddy plantation down by 12.62 percent

Kathmandu, July 7: The paddy plantation has declined by 12.62 percent this year. It was 45 percent paddy plantation by this time last year, while this year record stands at 32.38 percent across the country.

Till Monday, the country recorded paddy plantation in 443,595 hectares of land, according to Prakash Kumar Sanjel, director general at Agriculture Department. The country has 1.3 million plus hectares of land suitable for paddy cultivation.

Sudurpaschim Province experienced 57.9 percent plantation, while Gandaki Province 41 percent, Karnali Province 40.5 percent, Lumbini Province 37.3 percent, Bagmati Province 33.2 percent, Koshi Province 31.5 percent and Madhes Province 15 percent, according to the Department.

Director general Sanjel said the climate change impacted the entry and spread of monsoon this year, causing delayed plantation. Once the rainfall spreads across the country, remaining parts will cultivate the land for major crop.

Madhes Province has witnessed only 15.6 percent cultivation though it is the most suitable place for rice production. It has caused projection of declined production of rice this year. The southern plains make up nearly 70 percent of total rice production, while hilly region bears 30 percent.

04-       Meteorological Monitoring Station at 46 local levels of Karnali Province

Kakrebihar (Surkhet), July 7: The Meteorological Monitoring Centres have been set up at 46 local levels of Karnali Province. There are 89 local governments in the province.

Chief of the Hydrology and Meteorology Office in Surkhet, Dr Indira Kandel, said, “There are 71 Meteorological Monitoring Centres in operation in Karnali. The province has also run 31 hydro measurement centres. However, there is a lack of workforce to monitor two of these facilities.”

According to Dr Kandel the weather radar centres at Guranse, located on the border of Dailekh and Surkhet districts, has been closed for two years due to lightning damage.

These radars were set up in a bid to provide information about the weather condition of Karnali, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Although the equipment to install the radars were purchased from abroad, there was still the problem of skilled human resource to fix these devices in Nepal. Office is planning to install the devices next year, according to her.

She further said it is difficult to accurately evaluate the local weather condition in absence of meteorological monitoring stations. “Without such facilities at local levels, actual data on rainfall, temperature or other weather conditions are in short supply,” she said, adding, “It directly hampers forecasting and timely early warning of floods, landslides, heavy rains and other natural calamities.”

Karnali Province government has, however, stated that it had accorded priority to the expansion of meteorological infrastructures. Chief Secretary at the Province government, Birendra Kumar Yadav, said they were ready to extend supports to the local governments to purchase necessary equipment for measuring weather conditions so that weather prediction would be accurate and help minimize loss and damages.

05-       Over 1,000 persons provided free eye care services thru 2-day camp in Cambodia

Kathmandu, July 7: As many as 1,002 Cambodian citizens were provided free eye care services in a 2-day eye camp organized by the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) with technical support from the Lumbini Eye Institute and Research Centre and coordination of the Embassy of Nepal in Thailand (also accredited to Cambodia).

The camp was held on July 4–5 in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. The Cambodian citizens underwent free eye screening and treatment services.

Executive director at NNJS, Dr Shailesh Kumar Mishra, total 1,002 people, including 641 women and 361 men, underwent comprehensive eye examinations during the camp. Among them, 373 patients received free medicines, while 407 were provided with spectacles, and 192 received both medicines and eye glasses. In addition, 93 patients were diagnosed with cataracts and referred to the local hospitals for further treatment.

The camp was jointly inaugurated by Ambassador of Nepal to Cambodia, Dhan Bahadur Oli, and Governor of Kampong Cham Province, Un Chanda.

Prior to the inauguration, high-level discussions were held between Nepali and Cambodian officials on expanding bilateral cooperation in public health, eye care services, medical education, capacity building of healthcare professionals, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration in the health sector, according to NNJS.

During the programme, both parties also agreed to facilitate professional training and clinical exposure opportunities for Cambodian doctors and healthcare professionals at the Lumbini Eye Institute and Research Centre in Nepal. The clinical services during the camp were led by Prof Dr Sushila Patel, chief medical director of the Lumbini Eye Institute and Research Centre (Shree Ran Ambika Shah Eye Hospital), along with a team of specialist ophthalmologists who provided eye examinations, treatment and expert consultations.

Meanwhile, a delegation led by general secretary of NNJS, Mr Bharat Bahadur Chand, held meetings with officials from the Cambodian Ministry of Health, the Kampong Cham Provincial Government, and other key stakeholders to discuss future collaboration in eye health services, medical education, technical cooperation, capacity development, and institutional partnerships.

Speaking on the occasion, Chand expressed confidence that such international collaboration would further strengthen bilateral relations between Nepal and Cambodia while making a significant contribution to NNJS’s long-term vision of positioning Nepal as a regional destination for quality eye care, medical education and eye health tourism.

Vice president of NNJS and chairman of Shree Ran Ambika Shah Eye Hospital, Sagar Pratap Rana, stated that initiatives of this nature serve was an effective platform for sharing Nepal’s expertise and achievements in eye care with the international community.

Similarly, manager at Shree Ran Ambika Shah Eye Hospital, Prakash Rayamajhi, acknowledged the invaluable support of the Embassy of Nepal, the provincial government, Kampong Cham Provincial Hospital, healthcare professionals, volunteers and the local community in ensuring the successful completion of the camp.

NNJS reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the global reduction of avoidable blindness by sharing Nepal’s achievements, expertise and management experience in eye health with the international community. The organization also stated that it would continue expanding international partnerships to promote quality eye care services, medical education, research, and human resource development while advancing its vision of establishing Nepal as South Asia’s leading center for eye care, training and research.

NNJS further shared that since its establishment it has built a nationwide network of 28 eye hospitals, 44 district branches and 226 eye treatment centers. Through this network, it has provided eye care services to more than 50.2 million patients, including both Nepali and international beneficiaries. NNJS performed over 5.65 million sight-restoring eye surgeries by the end of 2025.

06-       Local government honours 15 ‘smart’ mothers

Tansen (Palpa), July 7: Rambha Rural Municipality in the district has honoured 15 smart mothers. They were selected for the honour based on a competition under the ‘Golden 1,000 Days’ scheme.

There were 22 health indicators set as criteria to meet the smart standard. Each indicator carried five marks. So, those achieving 110 marks were given the title of ‘smart mothers’.

Chairman of the rural municipality, Bishnu Prasad Bhandari, informed that they were honoured as part of the campaign to announce the local government a nutrition-friendly area. It is further aimed at building prosperous society where there are healthy mothers and healthy children.

The mothers receiving the title were offered shawls, Rs 10,000 cash and health and safety kits.

The indicators ranged from conducting delivery at health post to intake of folic acid during pregnancy and de-worming tablet,  TT vaccine, 1225 pills of iron and calcium during pregnancy and neo/perinatal period, maintenance of infant’s weight above 2.5-kg, adequate breastfeeding and food intake.

Administration of vitamin and de-worming to infant, measurement of infant’s weight and height every three month, regular sanitation and hygiene of child and mother, absence of malnutrition in both mother and child, birth registration child, minimum two years’ of child spacing and knowledge about menstrual hygiene also included in the list of indicators, according to chairman Bhandari.

Total 138 mothers had participated in the competition. The local government has formulated a work procedure for the smart mother.

07-       Sudurpaschim Province Assembly meeting at 11:00am

Sudurpaschim, July 7: The Sudurpaschim Province Assembly is holding its meeting at 11:00am today.

Information officer at Province Assembly secretariat, Yubraj Jaisi, said the assembly has a tentative schedule to table appropriation bill. Even the annual reports of the Office of the Auditor General, the Public Service Commission, the Tharu Commission and the Madhesi Commission will be presented in the meeting. 

The Province Assembly is meeting first after the presentation of the budget for fiscal year, 2083/84 since June 15. After the dispute surfaced among ruling parties over the budget, additional process for budget passage are awaited.


08-       Tulsi Cooperative debtors’ name list made public

Kathmandu, July 7: The Office of the Problematic Cooperative Management Committee has made public name list of 377 persons who took loans from the problematic Tulsi Multi-Purpose Cooperative Limited.

The committee has said that was made public today based on the available loan details.

Meanwhile, those debtors who have already cleared the dues, but have been appeared in the name list are requested to contact the committee with evidences of the clearance. Others in the list have been asked for contacting the committee and pay the loans. “Otherwise, the process of recovery will be forwarded as per the existing law.”

The decision to publish the name list is for recovering the loans of problematic cooperative and ensuring the rights of depositors, it is said.

09-       Bhanu Jayanti celebration for three days

Damauli, July 7: The 213th birth anniversary of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya is being celebrated by organizing various programmes in Tanahu district. The Bhanubhakta Birthplace Development Committee is making preparation to observe the Bhanu Jayanti, birth anniversary of a pioneering poet of Nepali language, for three days.

In this connection, a meeting was held on Monday under the chairmanship of mayor of Bhanu Municipality and chair of the Bhanu Birthplace Development Committee, Anand Raj Tripathi. As per meeting decision, the local government would conduct programmes for three days- on Asad 27, 28 and 29 (July 11-13).

Committee’s executive secretary Kripahari Laudari informed that on the first day, the local government would conduct prayers at various places in veneration of the belief related to pioneering poet Bhanubhakta.

A Bhanubhakta Ramayana recitation competition and a special poetry symposium are scheduled for the second day. The events would be attended by noted writers and poets.

Laudari further shared that a morning procession would be held on Asad 29, the day poet Bhanubhakta was born. His statue would be garlanded and a special discussion on his personality and poetry held for the protection, promotion and publicity of the birthplace of Bhanubhakta.

Deputy mayor of Bhanu Municipality, Uma Gotame and chief administrative officer Suraj Shrestha viewed collective efforts were needed to develop the birthplace of the leading poet as a centre for national and international literary tourism.

Bhanubhakta Acharya was born on Asad 29, 1871 BS. He is known as a leading poet of the early period of Nepali literature. He translated Balmiki’s Ramayana from Sanskrit to Nepali language.

It was Motiram Bhatta conferring the title of ‘Adikavi’ (pioneering poet) of the Nepali language on Bhanubhakta. Bhanubhakta wrote various texts like Prasnottar, Bhaktamala and Badhushikshya.

10-       NRB issues bonds worth Rs 25 billion

Kathmandu, July 7: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has called for bids for bonds worth Rs 25 billion.

A public notice issued by the central bank here today states that the bonds of 2084 ‘Ng’ (2027 ‘E’) can be bid online. Only banks and financial institutions classified as ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ that have obtained licenses from NRB (counterparties) are allowed to participate in the bond auction.

Counterparties are required to mention the amount they wish to bid and the interest rate (up to four decimal places).

NRB has stated that bidding can be done in such a way that the minimum is Rs 50 million and the maximum up to the total call amount exactly divisible by 50 million.

11-       Grants-based initiatives under NAMP prove beneficial for target groups in Bhojpur

Bhojpur, July 7: Various grants-based initiatives launched Under the National Agricultural Modernisation Programme (NAMP) have played a significant role in encouraging farmers to adopt commercial farming practices in Bhojpur district.

Subsidies and technical assistance provided for the expansion of orange, cardamom and vegetable cultivation have motivated farmers to purse more sustainable agricultural practices.

The Special Crop Zone Technical Unit, Bhojpur under the Programme Implementation Unit Sankhuwasabha, has launched the Cardamom Super Zone programme in the district. It covers 35 wards across seven of Bhojpur district’s nine local levels.

Similarly, ‘Orange Zone’ programme has been expanded to 26 wards across five local levels.

According to Zone Technical Unit, Bhojpur, farmers are ensured both grants and technical assistance under the programme, and in the current fiscal year, 109 farmers have received grants assistance under various schemes.

Agriculture and Livestock Entrepreneurship Development Programme, Sangeeta Shrestha of Bhojpur-5 has taken up commercial vegetable and chilli farming after receiving a grant of Rs 400,000 grants. Four other agricultural firms have also received grants of the same amount under the programme.

Likewise, Hari Prasad Pradhan of Gupteshwor of Bhojpur municipality-3 said the assistance has further encouraged him to engage in agriculture.  He has built a cemented irrigation pond and expanded his orange farming to 20 ropani of land (one ropani is equivalent to 5,476 square feet).

 A recent inter-agency monitoring was carried out in participation of stakeholders concerned in the district found the implementation of the programme to be effective, said Bhojpur municipality mayor Kailash Kumar Ale.

District Coordination Committee Bhojpur’s Officiating Chief Anisha Khadka said initiatives implemented under the agricultural modernization programme have proved beneficial for the target groups. She added that such programmes have played a significant role in supporting the livelihoods and generating income.

In the current fiscal year, the office provided grant assistance to 54 farmers under the irrigation infrastructure construction and maintenance programme. Moreover, 30 modern cardamom kilns have been provided to the farmers under the improved modern cardamom kiln installation and construction programme.

Likewise, 11 agricultural firms have received grants under the orange crop area expansion programme.

Similarly, orange nursery strengthening, establishment of cardamom nursery resource center, development of model orange gardens, canopy management of cardamom crops, agricultural mechanization and food element support, agricultural crops including indigenous crops processing, labeling and marketing support programme, agricultural and livestock entrepreneurship development and farming programme are being effectively operated.

 It is said that millet biscuits are being manufactured in Ramprasadrai-6 under the indigenous crops programme.

The office has stated that the cardamom area has been expanded to 102 ropanis this fiscal year through the Chaklabandi-based (plotting) farming programme with the plantations of 55,000 cardamom seedlings along the area.

The overall impact of all these programmes has contributed noticeably to increasing agricultural production in the district and encouraging farmers to explore opportunities in commercial farming.

12-       Landslides block roads across Karnali Province

Kathmandu, July 7: Landslides triggered by incessant rain have blocked several roads across Karnali Province, bringing the road traffic to standstill on those roads. 

According to Abhi Narayan Kafle, Spokesperson of the Nepal Police, a landslide has completely blocked the Jajarkot-Dolpa road section at Maluwa, Nalagaad municipality in Jajarkot district.

Likewise, Rukum Ghorahi Shahid Marga has been shut down by the landslide that occurred at Harning of Maadi rural municipality-6 in Rolpa district on Monday, informed Spokesperson Kafle. 

Similarly, the Bheri Corridor, which has been completely closed following a flood in Rejegar river at Aathbiskot municipality in Rukum Paschim on July 1, remains closed.

Some major highways and roads that were blocked by heavy rainfall have since reopened for one-way or partial traffic. Efforts are continuing to reopen other obstructed roads, Kafle added.

With the monsoon active across the country, Nepal Police have urged the public to avoid travel until highways that are completely blocked are reopened.

Police have also appealed to travelers to observer precautions and travel only when absolutely necessary on roads that are currently open.

13-       Bird flu brought under control in seven districts

Kathmandu, July 7: Bird flu has been brought under control in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi. Bird flu is an infectious disease. This bird-related disease had recently spread to 11 districts.

According to the Department of Livestock Services, bird flu is yet to be brought under control in four districts: Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Kavrepalanchok.

The department has deployed a technical team and safely managed by destroying all birds, bird products, and poultry materials in the infected area, informed the department’s spokesperson Dr. Mukul Upadhyay.

During disease control, the Animal Quarantine Office destroyed illegally trafficked birds by deploying patrols with high vigilance.

The department has said that after the disease came under control, restrictions on the sale and distribution of poultry products have been relaxed.

According to the department spokesperson Upadhyay, since bird flu is a highly contagious disease affecting birds, he informed that necessary personnel have been deployed in the affected areas in coordination and cooperation with the federal, provincial, and local levels.

14-       ADB President Kanda pays courtesy call on PM Shah

Kathmandu, July 7: President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Masato Kanda, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Balendra Shah today.

The meeting took place at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) in Singha Durbar. In the meeting, the discussion focused on promoting good governance, economic reforms, and infrastructure development in Nepal, according to Deepa Dahal, the Prime Minister’s press and research advisor.

The ADB President, who is currently visiting Nepal, also met with Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle on Monday.

On Monday, the Government of Nepal and ADB had signed a concessional loan agreement of about Rs 25 billion, which is equivalent to 165 million US dollars.

15-       Dr Khatri appointed Vice Chair of Medical Education Commission

Kathmandu, July 7: Prof. Dr. Devendra Khatri has been appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the Medical Education Commission.

Prime Minister and the Chairman of the commission, Balendra Shah, appointed Prof. Khatri as the vice chair of the commission.

Minister for Education and Sports and Co-chair of the commission, Sasmit Pokhrel, presented the appointment letter to the newly appointed vice chair Prof Khatri at the ministry today.

Earlier, since the vice-chairperson position was vacant in the commission, former vice-chairperson Shrikrishna Giri was given the responsibility of acting vice-chairperson until another arrangement was made.

After the government issued an ordinance made for special arrangements regarding the dismissal of public officials, officials including the commission’s vice-chair Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha were dismissed. After that, the vice-chair position of the commission was vacant.
