Spring climbing season concludes;Nepal earns Rs 1.26 billion in revenue

Kathmandu, June 10: Nepal’s spring mountaineering season has concluded with a total of 1,195 domestic and international climbers securing permits to ascend 31 peaks, including the world’s highest mountain, Sagarmatha (Mount Everest).

According to the Department of Tourism, 495 climbers from 56 countries obtained permits for Mt Everest alone, comprising 390 men and 105 women. Among them, 44 climbers were from Nepal.

More than 1,000 support staff and guides also successfully reached the summit alongside the permit holders.

China recorded the highest number of Everest permit holders with 159 climbers, followed by the United States (152), India (101), Germany (75), the United Kingdom (74) and Russia (70), informed the Department.

During the season, Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa extended his own world record by summiting Everest for the 32nd time. Among women climbers, Lhakpa Sherpa set a new milestone with her 11th ascent of Mt Everest.

The government collected a total of Rs 1.26 billion in mountaineering royalties during the spring season, with Everest contributing the largest share of the revenue.

01-       Pokhara to host week-long sports festival

Kaski, June 10: Pokhara is set to host a week-long Sports Week from June 13 to 19 with the aim of promoting sports culture and identifying emerging athletic talent.

The event is being organized by the Pokhara Metropolitan City Sports Development Committee to make sporting activities more systematic, inclusive and talent-oriented.

The week-long programme will feature competitions ranging from national-level events to grassroots sports.

Committee Chair Deepak Godar said seven sports disciplines have been included in the festival, comprising two national-level competitions and five grassroots-level events.

According to him, the national-level competitions will feature Muay Thai and cycling, while grassroots events will include judo, hockey, full-contact karate and table tennis, among others.

Godar expressed confidence that the grassroots competitions would help identify sporting talent and nurture a new generation of athletes.

He said the initiative aims to provide opportunities to promising local players, contribute to producing future national athletes and strengthen sports culture.

Preparations for the event are currently in full swing, according to the committee.

Member Secretary Suraj Adhikari said additional activities, including a Martial Arts Festival and other sports-related programmes, will also be organized during Sports Week.

Adhikari added that several sporting events, including the President Running Shield, had already been held during the current fiscal year under the metropolitan city’s organization and facilitation.

The upcoming Sports Week is expected to provide a platform for sports disciplines that had not been covered earlier.

He said the event also seeks to promote diverse sports and create competitive opportunities for athletes, while the national-level competitions are expected to strengthen Pokhara’s identity as a sports tourism destination.

03-       International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations being observed today

Kathmandu, June 10: The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations is being observed across the world, including in Nepal, today.

The Day aims to promote mutual understanding, respect and cooperation among civilizations and cultures at a time of growing global conflicts, inequality, mistrust and development challenges.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on June 7, 2024, declaring June 10 as the annual International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

The resolution, proposed by China, received support from more than 80 countries.

According to the United Nations, dialogue among civilizations helps eliminate discrimination, prejudice and misconceptions while fostering trust, understanding and friendly relations among nations, cultures and communities.

The UN has recognized dialogue as an effective means to advance global peace, shared development, human welfare and prosperity.

On the occasion, the international community has been encouraged to uphold civilizational diversity as a shared heritage of humanity and strengthen tolerance, harmony and intercultural dialogue.

The United Nations has expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation among diverse civilizations and cultures would contribute to building a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world.

For Nepal, the observance reflects the country’s multicultural and multilingual character, where diverse communities have long coexisted.

This year marks the second global observance of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

04-       Weather forecast: Rain, thunderstorms likely today

Kathmandu, June 10: Parts of the country are likely to experience partly cloudy to rainy weather conditions today, according to the Weather Forecasting Division.

The weather service informed that hilly and mountainous regions, including Koshi Province, will remain generally cloudy during the day, while the Tarai belt is expected to see partly cloudy skies.

Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces, said the Division.

Likewise, isolated rainfall is also forecast for hilly and mountainous areas of Madhesh, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces, as well as one or two places in the Tarai belt of Sudurpaschim.

Hot weather is likely to prevail in some places in the Tarai belt of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Provinces.

Tonight, partly to generally cloudy conditions with chances of rain and thunderstorms are expected in several parts of the country, the weather service shared.

05-       Flydubai to launch direct Pokhara-Dubai flights from September 23

Gandaki, June 10: Flydubai has received approval to operate direct flights on the Pokhara-Dubai-Pokhara route, marking a significant step toward establishing regular international air connectivity from Pokhara.

According to Pokhara International Airport General Manager Jagannath Niraula, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has granted permission for daily operations beginning September 23.

“The flight schedule has already been approved on Monday. Daily Pokhara-Dubai flights will commence from September 23,” informed Niraula.

A technical team from Flydubai, an Emirati government-owned airline based in Dubai, recently carried out a detailed inspection of security, safety and operational readiness at Pokhara International Airport prior to the approval.

Welcoming the decision, Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhana Raj Acharya described it as a major milestone for Nepal’s third international gateway.

He said the direct link with Dubai would open access to more than 300 global destinations across the Middle East, Europe and beyond, boosting tourism and helping reduce pressure on Kathmandu’s aviation hub.

Although inaugurated in January 2023, the Airport-built at a cost of around Rs 22 billion-has so far seen limited international operations, with most flights remaining domestic.

A brief international service by Himalaya Airlines on the Pokhara-Lhasa route in 2025 was later discontinued.

Tourism entrepreneurs have long been calling for regular international flights, noting that the airport has already attracted nearly Rs 100 billion in tourism-related investments in Pokhara.

They have also urged expansion of routes to major cities in India and China.

06-       Nepal to host Int’l ‘Bodhi Dialogue’ Conference June 16-19

Kathmandu, June 10: Nepal is set to host an international conference on the country’s economy and geopolitical dynamics under the title ‘Bodhi Dialogue’.

Organized by the Center for Social Innovation and Foreign Policy (CESIF), the four-day conference will be held in Kathmandu from June 16 to 19.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, CESIF Chairperson and former ambassador Vijay Kant Karna shared that the event will bring together Nepali and international experts to discuss Nepal’s economic development prospects and the evolving geopolitical landscape of South Asia.

According to the organizers, the Bodhi Dialogue aims to serve as a platform for in-depth and forward-looking discussions on economic, political and geopolitical transformations.

Karna informed the recommendations emerging from the conference will be documented and submitted to the government.

He added that the conference has been named Bodhi Dialogue to reflect Nepal’s indigenous knowledge traditions and to support the government’s soft diplomacy initiatives.

07-       KMC to initiate ‘Film Festival in Every Neighborhood’ campaign

Kathmandu, June 10: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is going to organize a ‘Film Festival in Every Neighborhood’ as part of its initiative to connect film professionals with local communities and recognize their contributions.

Ashaman Sangat, Coordinator of KMC’s Heritage and Tourism Committee, shared that the campaign would help bring all sectors of the film industry closer to the community.

He informed that the initiative seeks to promote filmmaking as a respected profession and strengthen public appreciation of the industry.

The KMC’s Heritage and Tourism Department will implement the initiative.

The Metropolis will collaborate with non-profit organizations involved in social and cultural activities, youth clubs, community groups, neighborhood development committees, cultural associations and traditional local organizations to execute the initiative at the community level.

Film screenings will be held in open public spaces such as traditional neighborhoods and junctions and complexes known as Baha:, Bahi, among others in Newar community, courtyards, squares, amphitheaters and parks, added Sangat.

The KMC has invited proposals from organizations interested in partnering with the Metropolis to manage the community-based events.

Interested groups can submit their proposals through the address provided on KMC’s website by June 10’s midnight.

Department Chief Kumari Rai urged interested organizations or groups to participate and cooperate in managing the initiative.

To ensure the festival maintains quality standards, a committee will be formed to oversee the selection of films based on criteria such as quality, content and presentation, said Rai.

She added that the committee will also monitor and regulate overall campaign.

08-       Around 2.5 million farmers enrolled in Farmer Registration System

Kathmandu, June 10: Around 2.5 million farmers have been enlisted in the Farmer Registration System of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment.

The farmers were registered based on the details of land and production. Officer at the Agriculture Information Centre, Sanjeev Pandit, shared that the farmers were enlisted through online system with an objective of providing necessary subsidies and facilities to increase production. 

He mentioned that activities were underway to enlist remaining more than 1.6 million farmers as the population of farmers is 4.130 million people are depend on agriculture, as per Agriculture Census, 2078.

After listing all farmers, the ministry has set a plan to classify farmers into four categories—subsistence farmers, small farmers, medium farmers and large farmers, Pandit added, stating that identity cards would be distributed as well as the farmers would be connected to digital information system after classification.

It would be easier to the government to provide various facilities including grants, chemical fertilizer, seeds and service management on the basis of the farmer identity cards.

Information and details of the farmers have been collected in coordination with local levels across the country.

The Centre has also called the farmers to register their names in the programme.

09-       There is no truth in publicity about leaking of budget info: Finance Minister Wagle

Kathmandu, June 10: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said that there is no truth in the claims of irregularities due to leaks of information before the budget was presented in Parliament.

Responding to questions regarding the main provisions of the Estimates on Revenue and Expenditure (Budget) for the Fiscal Year 2026/27 at today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Finance Committee, he clarified that the allegations against him that information about the proposed tax rates was leaked and that a BYD electric vehicles were brought in on May 28 were baseless.

Finance Minister Wagle had presented the Budget for Fiscal Year 2026/27 in the joint sitting of both houses of Federal Parliament on May 29 as per the constitutional provision.

In the Finance Committee meeting today, he clarified that amendment was made to the Finance Bill as some points included in the budget statement were omitted in it, while mentioning that rumours that information of the budget were leaked  before it was presented in Parliament were being deliberately spread against him.

He said that unnecessary publicity was made with the ill intention of drawing the Prime Minister and Finance Minister into controversy, without any facts or evidence.

“No changes have been made to the Finance Bill after correcting the visible errors and presenting the bill to the sovereign MPs. The House of Representatives was obstructed and organised rumours about the budget and us were spread in an attempt to defame us,” said Finance Minister Dr Wagle, adding that MPs should not fall into the illusion that such attacks can tarnish the image of a government that has ruthlessly moved forward for good governance.

In the meeting, committee member Lima Adhikari said the budget presented in the House was historic and transformative, and mentioned that many issues were clarified through Minister Wagle’s response.

Committee member Narendra Kumar Kerung stated that the comment that nothing happened during previous governments was incorrect.

10-       Nepali Women’s Cricket Team fails to make it to ACC T-20 Asia Cup

Kathmandu, June 10: Nepal has been defeated by Thailand in the quarterfinal match of the ACC Women’s Premier Cup cricket tournament. With this loss, Nepal is out of the ACC T20 Asia Cup qualifying race.

In the match held today at the Bayuemas Oval Cricket Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Nepal was defeated by Thailand by 56 runs.

Chasing the target of 131 runs set by Thailand, Nepal was bowled out for 74 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Rubina Khatri contributed an unbeaten 20 runs for Nepal. Similarly, Soni Pakhrin scored 15 while Samjhana Khadka and Sita Ranamagar added 12 runs each, and no other players could score in double figures.

Thailand, having won the toss and opting to bat first, scored 130 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Nanapat Khoncharooyankai of Thailand contributed an unbeaten 62 runs. Similarly, Fanita Mai scored 26 runs, Chanida Suthiruwang made 16, and captain Narumoi Chaivai scored 8 runs.

In bowling, Nepal’s Kavita Kunwar, Rubina Chhetri and Riya Sharma each took 1 wicket.

Before this, in a match held in Malaysia this month, Nepal was defeated by China and was also eliminated from the Asian Games qualifiers. The Asian Games are being held in Japan this year.

11-       Police BOP set up at disputed border between Bajura and Humla

Bajura, June 10: The Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal and the Nepal Police will set up temporary border outposts (BOP) in the Ranisaina area of Himali Rural Municipality for the protection of the area and the security of the citizens there.

A joint temporary BOP and police post of the Armed Police and Nepal Police is now to be established in the area after the incident on May 17, when locals of Humla detained and held the Ward Member Pemagara Gurung and others hostage for three days and after the news on May 19 that locals of Kharpunath Rural Municipality in Humla had assaulted residents of Ranisaina Lampata.

Chief District Officer of Bajura, Dorendra Niraula informed RSS that a BOP will be established at Lampata in Ranisaina and a temporary police post will be in place according to a Secretary-level decision taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs a week back.

Regarding the incident that occurred on May 17 in Ranisaina, Chief District Officer Niraula stated that according to the decision of the Home Secretary-level meeting a police post will temporarily be stationed for the protection of the area and the safety of citizens there.

According to CDO Niraula, a 21-member team of the Armed Police Force and a seven-member team of Nepal Police have been sent to Lampata in the Himali Rural Municipality.
