Dhangadhi, July 1: Video X-ray and mammography services at Geta Hospital in Kailali have been suspended due to the absence of a radiologist, forcing patients to seek diagnostic services elsewhere.
Hospital Information Officer Nain Singh Karki said the services were discontinued after radiologist Dr. Hom Pant resigned from his post following his transfer back to Koshi Province two months ago.
The state-owned hospital, located in Geta Sub-Metropolitan City, is operated under the Sahid Dasharath Chand Health Sciences University. It is being developed as a 600-bed healthcare facility and serves as a primary medical lifeline for Sudurpaschim Province.
According to Karki, the hospital had been providing an average of 20 video X-ray examinations daily before the service was suspended.
Patients now have no option but to visit private health facilities or other hospitals for the service.
He said gynecologists continue to perform ultrasound scans for pregnant women. However, mammography services-a key imaging tool for the early detection of breast cancer-have been completely suspended, as, he added, both the examinations and the reporting require a qualified radiologist.
Geta Hospital was the first in the region to introduce mammography services, but the facility has remained idle since the radiologist’s departure. Although infrastructures have been built for a 600-bed hospital, only 50 beds are currently in operation.
Despite repeated demands from local residents to expand healthcare services, much to their dismay, even the existing facilities have yet to become fully operational.
Similarly, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), for which the necessary infrastructure has already been constructed, are yet to be brought into operation. #nepal #health
