PM Oli to inaugurate new office of Madhes Province Police

Dhanusha, Aug 15: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inaugurate a newly constructed office building of Mahesh Province Police today.

The building at Janakpurdham sub-metropolis was constructed at cost of around Rs 231 million, said Spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Communications and Law of Madhes Province, Ganesh Nayak.

Similarly, PM Oli will also lay foundation stone for blacktopping of a road at Sonam rural municipality in Mahottari district today itself, shared Chief of Infrastructure Development Office, Jaleshwor, Rajelal Karna.

The 8.384-kilometer Raghunathpur bazaar-Sonam-Tarahari-Sundarpur road of postal highway is going to be blacktopped by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development with loan assistance of the World Bank. 

The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 346 million rupees.

09-       Social media platforms must come under the ambit of law: PM Oli

Lalitpur, Aug 15: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that all social media platforms operating in Nepal should come under purview of the law.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the ‘Digital Nepal Conclave 2025’ organized by the ICT Foundation here today, Prime Minister Oli said that all social media platforms should be registered as per the prevailing laws of Nepal, pay taxes and fulfill other required obligations.

“The Nepal government should be aware of all types of transactions related to information technology in Nepal, hence all social media platforms in operation in Nepal should fulfill their obligations as per the law, including paying taxes”, said Prime Minister Oli.

He also said that the government is working for the development and promotion of information technology that can help people make an income with investments at home and abroad.

Stating that the rapidly developing information technology was taking people along, he recalled that he was happy to learn during his visit to Pushpalal Mid-Hill highway that even the elderly mothers of the remote villages of Rukum used Facebook.

The Prime Minister said that Nepal is a suitable destination for digital technology and green energy, and emphasized the need to make full use of artificial intelligence to achieve development and prosperity. The government has recently passed an AI policy towards that end.

More than 150,000 SEE students benefited from online education since last year as per the government’s announcement about the same. Information technology should be used in education and development while protecting children from the harmful impact of mobile phones.

He said that the government is now clear about the use of information technology in bringing about stability, good governance and development, along with the involvement of the private sector.

Noting the use of information technology was also necessary for the government to maintain good governance, Prime Minister Oli expressed the belief that corruption could be prevented by using and developing information technology and improving human conduct.

10-       NC is the centre of trust of all citizens: President Deuba

Patan (Lalitpur), Aug 15: Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that Nepali Congress is a centre of trust of people of all castes, languages and regions.

At the inaugural session of Third National Convention of Nepal Rastriya Magar Sangh organised at the NC Party Office, Sanepa, today, he said that the NC was working for the empowerment of indigenous nationalities, Dalits, women, Muslims and backward communities with a commitment towards nationality, democracy and socialism.

“Magar is the largest ethnic group among indigenous communities of Nepal and the Magar Sangh was established in 2064 BS after sensing the necessity of a strong sister organisation to organise the Magars behind a democratic  ideology,” viewed President Deuba.

He argued that the Sangh should shoulder more responsibility to take NC’s policy, ideology and principle among Magar community as well as make Magar community’s voice as the voice of the NC.

            “The Nepali Congress adopted ‘Kadamjam’ campaign in order to ensure rights and participation of Karnali, Dalits, indigenous and Madhesi communities as well as to guarantee representation of people from underprivileged communities, regions and genders within the party.”

He also assured of providing support and cooperation in order to establish leadership ensuring greater representation in a situation where there is nominal representation of Magar community in party leadership.

The NC President argued that the NC-led government had declared Lakhan Thapa, who got martyrdom after raising voice for the first time against Rana regime, as the first martyr.

He underscored that the NC was determined for effective implementation of achievements gained under leadership of NC—republic, federalism, secularism, proportional and inclusive system.

The third convention would conclude on Saturday by electing a new working committee.

11-       Preparation afoot to use Limbu and Maithili in govt businesses, demand to include Tharu language

Biratnagar, Aug 15: The Koshi Province government has endorsed the ‘Koshi Province Bill to make arrangements regarding language of government function 2081 BS’.

The move has paved the way for the official use of Limbu and Maithili languages in provincial government administrative work starting from November 11 this year, coinciding with the birth anniversary of national luminary Phalgunanda.

According to the 8th report of the Language Commission, Nepali is the highest spoken language in the province followed by Limbu and Maithili.

According to the census of 2078 BS, the province has over 4.9 million population out of which 11.68 per cent population speaks Maithili while 6.7 per cent speak Limbu.

The Bill was originally introduced as a private bill by lawmakers of opposition parties. The ruling coalition had initially rejected the bill but later reintroduced by the government for the theoretical discussion.

The coalition government, led by CPN (UML)’s Hikmat Karki with support from Nepali Congress, put forward the Bill with an objective to preserve, promote and develop all mother languages spoken within the Province.

The new legislation allows translated documents in Maithili and Limbu in administrative business, publication of provincial, gazette and use in public service. It also permits the local level within the Province to use those majority-spoken languages for administrative purpose.

The provincial government has expressed its commitment to protect and promote other mother languages spoken within the province through research, academic, literary and cultural initiatives.

For that, a group of 11 language experts will be formed to support these initiatives with inclusion of at least one-third women.

The provincial government as well the local governments are obliged to make budgetary arrangements for protection and promotion of official languages.

Furthermore, 253 employees of 7th level will be recruited to facilitate the implementation of the Bill.

Meanwhile, demand has been raised to add Tharu lanaguge in the list of official language in the Province, citing 4.4 per cent of demography of Tharu speaking community in the province.

12 – PAC meeting postponed after MPs failed to turn up

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The meeting today of the Public Accounts Committee under the House of Representatives has been postponed after failing to meet the required quorum.

According to committee secretary Ekram Giri, only 12 lawmakers turned up for the meeting that required at least 51 per cent of the members to fulfill the requirement for a meeting. The meeting was postponed until further notice after the quorum was not reached in the 26-member committee.

According to Rule 182 of the House of Representatives Rules 2079, the quorum of the committee is 51 percent of the current number of members.

Today’s meeting had a meeting to discuss the complaint filed with the committee regarding the load-carrying capacity of trucks. The Nepal Truck Transport Entrepreneurs’ Federation had filed a complaint with the committee alleging that the existing legal provisions regarding the load-carrying capacity of freight vehicles were not being implemented and regulated.

The complaint was filed with the committee alleging that the condition of bridges and roads had deteriorated and the risk of accidents had increased due to the operation of vehicles carrying weights contrary to the standards set by the Freight Vehicle Load-Carrying Directive, 2074.

13 –      Annual report of Nat’l Inclusion Commission tabled in NA

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The annual report of the ‘National Inclusion Commission’ for the year 2081/82 has been tabled in today’s meeting of the National Assembly.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, on the behalf of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, presented the annual report of the Commission.

Similarly, National Assembly Secretary Dr Surendra Aryal tabled the ‘Integrated Report of Coordination Meetings with Electoral Committee held in seven provinces’. 

The report was prepared by incorporating the suggestions received during the meetings in all provinces, he said.

The NA will meet next on August 19.

14-       MPs draw govt’s attention on contemporary issues

Kathmandu, Aug 15:  The National Assembly (NA) members have drawn the government’s attention towards various contemporary issues including natural disasters, inflation and corruption, among others.

Speaking during the Special Hour of the NA’s meeting today, Nepali Congress’s Kiranbabu Shrestha urged the government to address the anomalies and abbreviations that have surfaced along with the development of communication and technology.

He insisted that we should make proper use of communication and technology rather than misusing it and gradually eliminating the anomalies prevailing in the communication sector.

According to him, despite the political changes in the country, the condition of people had not improved yet.

He, thus, called for unity among the political parties to bring about positive changes in the lives of people along with ensuring economic prosperity in the country.

Similarly, Jagat Prasad Sharma viewed that we should focus on strengthening federalism, arguing that federalism is a foundation for building socialism, not division.

CPN (Unified Socialist)’s Rajendra Laxmi Gaire cited that 122 people died and 22 were missing in the natural disasters in the last four months and stressed on effective disaster preparedness.

Gaire also demanded that those affected by natural disasters such as landslide, floods and earthquake must be provided relief immediately.

Also, airing his views, NC’s Padam Bahadur Pariyar said that the political parties and leadership that strove for political change should be sincere in ensuring rule of law in the country.

”The current political leadership understands the history of Nepal and has fought for a change. But it seems to lack energy and enthusiasm to address the contemporary issues,” he lamented.

Likewise, CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Shree Krishna Adhikari called for prompt action on the part of government to resume the landslide-obstructed Araniko Highway.

He also cautioned towards the likelihood of price hike ahead of upcoming festivals. “I urge the government to ensure the operation of the disrupted roads, curb inflation and black marketeering and facilitate the return of citizens through southern border during the festival season,” he appealed.

CPN (UML)’s Rukmini Koirala noted that there was growing dissatisfaction among public towards the incumbent government due to its failure to meet public’s aspirations.

Emphasizing the need to empower local government thereby further strengthening federalism, Koirala voiced, “The government should be serious towards addressing fundamental issues such as education reform, job creation, quality healthcare services, commercialization of agriculture and industrialization among others.”

15 –      Indian Embassy donates books for RSS library

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has supported the library expansion campaign of the .

At a function organized at the Embassy today on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava presented books related to journalism to RSS Executive Chair Dharmendra Jha. The embassy had announced book grants for 39 academic institutions and libraries including the RSS library.

On the occasion, Chair Jha expressed gratitude for the books  and expressed confidence that this initiative would benefit RSS and other journalists and journalism teachers and scholars who come to study at the library.

The Embassy organised various programs to celebrate the 79th Independence Day of India, where the address to the nation by the President of India, Mrs Droupadi Murmu,  was read out.

At the event, Ambassador Srivastava honoured the widows and next of kin of deceased personnel of the Indian Armed Forces from Nepal and handed over an AGIF (Army Group Insurance Fund) cheque of Rs. 64 million.

The program was attended by members of the Indian community in Nepal as well as embassy officials and their families.

During the programme, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center at the Embassy and students from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu presented a cultural performance of patriotic songs.

16 – PM Oli inaugurates new administrative building of Madhes Province Police

Janakpurdham, Aug 15: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has inaugurated a newly constructed administrative building of Madhes Province Police Office, Janakpur.

The building was constructed at a cost of around Rs 231 million of the Madhes Province government. The well-equipped building has 68 rooms, according to Province Police Office, Janakpur.

The Ministry of Home, Communications and Law of Madhes Province government had constructed the building under a multi-year project.

The Province government has believed that work efficiency and performance of the office would be enhanced from the new building.

17-       Thai Embassy to organize ‘Journey to Thailand’

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The Thai Embassy in Nepal is going to organize the ‘Journey to Thailand and Top Thai Brands 2025’ from August 29-31.

The event, to be held in collaboration with the Thai Trade Centre in New Delhi, India will be held at The Plaza in Lalitpur. Thai Ambassador to Nepal Suwapong Sirisorn is scheduled to inaugurate the programme on August 29.

Organizing a press meet here today, Thai Ambassador Sirisorn shared that the event is open to general public with free entry. The event will feature various activities and Thai cultural programmes including free handicraft workshop and Thai massage.

He added that the stalls will also exhibit Thai cuisines and several products. The participants will also have opportunity to meet the representatives of renowned Thai business, hospital and university as well.

Giveaways are also one of the highlights of the three-day event where the participants could win round-trip flight tickets to Thailand.

The event aims to further strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Nepal and foster friendship at people-to-people level, according to the organizers.

18-       Seven institutions honoured for occupational safety

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The government has honoured seven institutions from seven provinces as the best for practicing occupational safety and health.

At a program organized at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security here today, Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari distributed certificates of appreciation to Buttabari Tea Pvt. Ltd. of Koshi Province, Dabur Nepal Pvt. Ltd. of Madhes, Barun Beverage (Nepal) Pvt. Ltd. of Bagmati, Gorkha Brewery Pvt. Ltd. of Gandaki, Bijay Distillery Pvt. Ltd. of Lumbini, Mahakali Sugar E Pvt. Ltd. of Sudurpaschim, and Shuva Hotel Pvt. Ltd. of Karnali.

On the occasion, Minister Bhandari said that proper management of occupational safety and health will increase the productivity of workers, while calling on all enterprises to make their workplaces healthy, safe, organized and dignified.

01-       NA meeting scheduled to take place today

Kathmandu, Aug 15: A meeting of the National Assembly (NA) is scheduled to take place at Federal Parliament building in New Baneswor at 11.45 this morning.

In today’s meeting of the Upper House, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to present the ‘Sixth Annual Report of the National Inclusive Commission for the fiscal year 2080/81’.

NA Secretary Dr Surendra Aryal will table the ‘Consolidated Report of the Coordination Meeting with Electorate Colleges organized in All Seven Provinces’ before the members.

Additionally, five parliamentary committees – International Relations and Tourism Committee, Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee, Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee, Public Accounts Committee, and Legislative Management Committee are holding their meetings today itself.

The International Relations and Tourism Committee will discuss the ‘Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Bill, 2081’ and the ‘Nepal Air Service Authority Bill, 2081’ with a presentation and discussion based on extensive comparative analysis from the ministry.

In the Industry and Commerce Committee, there is a schedule to discuss on the ‘Export-Import (Regulation) Bill, 2081’ with thematic experts.

Likewise, the Agriculture and Cooperatives Committee will discuss the current preparations for the Hindu Kush Himalayan Parliamentarians’  Meet-2025.

In the Public Accounts Committee, there will be a discussion on the complaints received regarding load capacities of trucks.

An agenda has been set to discuss on the ‘Nepal Citizenship (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081’ in the Legislative Management Committee, it is informed.

02-       Ponds constructed to lessen human-wildlife conflict

Damauli (Tanahun), Aug 15: The Division Forest Office has constructed ponds for wildlife after increasing intrusion of wild animals to human settlements with drying up of water sources in the forest.

Under the human-wildlife conflict management initiative, the office has created ponds in eight community forests in the district.

Forest Officer Kashiraj Pandit informed that ponds were constructed in Siddhabatasan community forest in Magde rural municipality-3, Amdanda Mohoriya community forest in Devghat rural municipality-4, Janashakti community forest in Rishing rural cunicipality-3, Barahseni community forest in ward 4 of the same municipality during the last fiscal year.

Likewise, the community forests, including Tara community forest in Shuklagandaki municipality-2, Siddhathan community forest in Bandipur rural municipality-2, and Masuregaira community forest in Bhimad municipality-4 also constructed ponds last year.

He informed that each community forest was aided Rs 100,000 for the construction of the ponds.

A recharge pond has been constructed in Bagishwori community forest located in Bhanu municipality-9 at a cost of Rs 100,000.

03-       Monsoon gradually getting weak

Kathmandu, Aug 15: The monsoon is gradually getting weak with its low pressure line shifting to the south from the average position, the Meteorological Forecasting Division stated.

This afternoon, the hilly areas of the country, including the Sudurpaschim province are likely to have cloudy weather while the remaining areas will see partial cloud cover.

The division forecasts moderate rainfall in some places of the hilly areas of Sudurpaschim province and a couple of places in the Terai.

Similarly, the hilly areas of the country, including the Koshi province, will generally have cloudy weather, while other areas will see partial cloud tonight.

As indicated, there is a chance of moderate rainfall in some places of the hilly areas of Gandaki province, as well as in the Terai, Bagmati, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.

In view of the risk of landslides and debris flows in the hilly areas due to rain, an increase in water levels in large and small rivers and streams, and potential disruptions in transportation, the division has urged the concerned public to stay alert with preparedness.

04-       Underground Irrigation Project’s working area expanded

Chitwan, Aug 15: Working area of the Underground irrigation Project has been expanded.

As informed, the project having its working area in Chitwan, Makwanpur, and Nawalparasi (Bardghat Suista East) now has been expanded to Bara and Parsa in Terai.

According to the irrigation project chief Biswobandhu KC, the government has expanded the project’s operational area with the water crisis deepening in the Terai region.

In the current fiscal year, a target has been set to complete 24 underground irrigation projects.

In the three previous districts, 12 tube wells will be installed at a cost of Rs. 190 million, and an additional 12 tube wells will be installed in the two new districts. There is a demand for 54 tube wells in the districts.

05-       Baglung-Beni road repaired at a cost of Rs 3.21 million

Myagdi, Aug 15: The Road Division Office has carried out maintenance of the 14-km-long Baglung-Beni road at the cost of Rs 32.1 million.

There was a compulsion to make riskier travel when the road that has been used as an alternative to the Maldhunga-Beni stretch was in the dilapidated state due to cracks, potholes, landslide depositions and scuffing of asphalt.

Engineer at the office, Bishnu Prasad Lamichhane stated that the road has been expanded by clearing of landslide debris at Hulake, Bhasbhase, Dhadeni, Sim, and Pangrekhola, and also that a drainage system has been constructed with slope, gravel, and asphalt.

He further shared that concrete drainage channels, gabion walls, and retaining walls have been placed for rainwater drainage.

06-       Foreign Minister extends greetings on India’s Independence Day

Kathmandu, Aug 15: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba has extended best wishes to the Indian government and the people there on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day of India.

Mentioning her Indian counterpart Dr S. Jaishankar on social media, she has stated that Nepal gives high value to its long and sustainable partnership with India.

“On India’s Independence Day, we wish for the prosperity, unity, and harmony of the Indian people to continue, and may India remain a shining example of democracy, inspiring countries around the world,” the Foreign Minister wrote on X.

07-       Landslide blocks Kodari Highway; 600 containers stuck across border

Chautara, Aug 15: As many as 600 containers carrying vegetables and fruits have been stuck across the Nepal-China Friendship (Miteri) Bridge due to landslide-triggered disruption along the Kodari Highway.

It has been 12 days since landslide debris blocked the way at Iku in Bhotekoshi rural municipality-2.

Chairperson of Nepal Truck Container Transportation Service, Arjun Sapkota told RSS that it has been difficult for vehicular movement and pedestrians’ mobility when landslide depositions were not cleared off.

Landslide has covered almost two-kilometer area. He informed that efforts are underway to pass the container goods by mobilizing porters. He lambasted government’s sluggish efforts for debris removal.

Meanwhile, Chief of the Charikot-based Road Division Office Amit Kumar Shrestha said incessant flow of mud has caused road disruption while expressing the commitment to open the road after clearing debris.
