Kathmandu, Aug 29: The monsoon has turned somewhat active in some parts of the country with the rise in the influence of water vapor-rich air from the Bay of Bengal.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division has stated that currently the monsoon is located around the average position of the low-pressure trough.
It is expected to be partly cloudy throughout the country today with a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in the hilly areas of all provinces.
There is also a chance of heavy rain in some parts of Koshi, Gandaki, and Sudurpashchim provinces.
Similarly, the weather will be partially to generally cloudy throughout the country tonight.
There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in one or two places in Koshi and Sudurpashchim provinces.
The division has cautioned the possible risks of landslides and debris flows as well as rising water level in the rivers and streams due to rain, and urged the concerned area people to stay alert with preparedness accordingly.

International Day against Nuclear Tests today
Kathmandu, Aug 29: Today is the International Day against Nuclear Test.
On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35.
The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
At the call of the United Nations, the day has been observed since 2010 to unite the global community against total elimination of nuclear weapons.
In each subsequent year, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, lectures, media broadcasts and other initiatives.
In a brief message on the occasion today, Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said the legacy of over 2000 nuclear weapons tests carried out in the past should not be forgotten while marking the 80th anniversary of the first nuclear test and stressed on embracing a world free of nuclear weapons.
He also emphasized on making promises not to allow repetition of such activities from now onward.

Non-violence festival kicks off in Kathmandu
Kathmandu, Aug 29: The non-violence festival kicked off in Kathmandu on Thursday.
The festival has featured several interactive sessions on forms of violence being meted out to the earth and animals by the human being.
As informed, nutrition experts, doctors and international representatives pitching for animal rights are also contributing to the discussions on non-violence and sustainable living during the festival.
The festival has also featured vegan food stalls and plant production corner to promote vegan lifestyle.
On the occasion visitors are being offered a taste of vegan foods as an alternative to meat. Likewise, the ‘leather’ bag manufactured from pineapple is expected to be a center of attraction among visitors in the festival.
At the inaugural session of the programme, former Minister for Finance, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat emphasized on adopting non-violent lifestyle to lessen the negative impacts of climate change and benefit human health.
Likewise, Chief Whip of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Santosh Pariyar stressed the need of equitable and wise sharing of power arguing power structure is the main cause of all kinds of violence.
At the session, representatives from different faith organizations shared that the crux of most of the religions is promoting non-violence.
International representatives and non-violence practitioners will deliver presentations on different topics, including food habit during Friday and Saturday, informed the Nepal Vegetarian Association, hoist of the event.
The festival will last on Saturday.

Two youths die in a bus-scooter collision
Kathmandu, Aug 29: Two youths died when the scooter they were riding collided with a bus parked near the Sky Bridge in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-32, Jadibuti.
Spokesperson at the Kathmandu District Police Range, Apil Raj Bohora informed that the accident took place early this morning.
Two critically injured persons –Nitesh Nepal, 23, from Paykhal Municipality-2, Hokse in Kavrepalanchowk and Shirish Paudel, 22. from Sunwal Municipality-1 in Nawalparasi (Bardghat Susta West) breathed their last while undergoing treatment.
Bus driver, Subash Tamang from Dolakha, has been taken under control. Police informed that investigation has been initiated against him.

SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship: Nepal-India in fray
Kathmandu, Aug 29: Nepal and India are competing in a march under the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U-17 Women’s Championship today.
The march will take place at 6.00 pm this evening, the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) informed.
In the championship underway in Double Round Robin League, India has topped the score board with 12 points while Nepal is in third position with three points.
The host, Bhutan, which has not secured any win in the march so far, is in fourth position. With nine points in credit, Bangladesh has secured the second position.
The four countries’ teams are participating in the championship.
According to the schedule, Nepal will fight against Bhutan on August 31. Nepal is already out from title winning race.

259 landless families receive land ownership certificates in Chitwan
Chitwan, Aug 29: The Land Problem Settlement Commission district committee has handed over land ownership certificates to 259 landless Dalit, landless squatters and unmanaged settlers in Chitwan.
Commission chair Iman Singh Moktan informed that land ownership certificates were distributed to 130 families from Ratnanagar Municipality and 129 from Bharatpur Metropolitan City.
A total of 51,000 persons had applied for land ownership certificates at the commission.
Work is under progress in a way to distribute certificates to 400 landless families, it is shared.
Land ownership certificates for 150 families have been prepared so far. The target is to prepare certificates for 400 families by the end of Asoj (October 17), chair Moktan said. The commission is working in coordination with local level.
